Media Create Sales: Week 22, 2017 (May 29 - Jun 04)

I would at least expect them to call it MH5 in Japan. I understand not doing it in the west.

Also, a main team can also make spinoffs in addition to mainline entries.

I said this yesterday but it seems its relevant tonight too, the revenue from a 60$ sale is not the same as the usual 39.99$ one from previous games.

Units vs units is not the only factor.

A Switch Monster Hunter would be $60 too, and it would be portable. Making a big PS4/XBO/PC Monster Hunter is not the risky move here, it's making a big Monster Hunter on everything but the Nintendo handheld. It just seems like a bad move.

I mean they can both be mainline.
Like Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne: main team works on new idea, other team continues the series.

It is honestly any riskier than making a brand new big Monster Hunter for the Wii instead of the PSP at the peak of MH popularity?

That's right, after Super Mario Bros 3, they named their next title Super Mario Wor...

Mother of god!

Yeah. I expect MH World series to be a series targeted for the Western audience (newer fanbase), while traditional numbered MH series to be targeted towards Japanese audience (existing fanbase).

You're literally so eager to flaunt you don't even know who you made a bet with :/

I usually recognise posters by their avatar. Woops. Getting late here, though I was sure it started with g.

I'm surprised the graphics aren't better too

Its by the team that made all the mainline games.

Lol I'm not the delusional one.

They didn't name it MH5 so as to not alienate a new, western audience.

This looks good but why is it blurry? Not direct feed?

The visuals in general are a mixed bag. The Monster looks pretty good as you would expect as does some other elements but you can see they also made sure to minimize work when it comes to the overall world.

Looking more and more like this is pretty much traditional MH with a few updates and tweaks that you would expect of a sequel jumping to a new platform. Changing my expectations of how this will be received little by little here.

From the MH Community Manager:

-All 14 weapons confirmed
-Health, Stamina, Potions, Sharpness all present
-Most importantly, well done steak jingle is there!

Looking forward to the stream on the 20th.

I wouldn't say it's riskier as the franchise will once again survive just fine, but it's more baffling. Capcom had no idea how a home console mainline game would sell post-franchise explosion, so they tried. They went right back to handhelds and to making loads of money. Now they're trying home consoles again while excluding the one home console that doubles as a handheld. I don't think that's very smart. The logical business decision was Switch/PS4, and maybe XBO and PC.

I mean it really depends on what you think their aims here are.

This sounds better and better. Can't wait for the stream now.

i suppose out of all possibilities, this platform and game choice makes the most sense

it means mainline mh5 should be switch and maybe ps4, maybe depending on how it sells on ps4, while we know mh is guaranteed to do well on the switch

i don't think capcom expects it to sell well in japan, but i think it could surprise us, considering western games are trending upwards in japan and mh has done well on consoles, even ports

1m is alot to ask, but 500k+ is reasonable, it isn't mainline after all

That was an easy bet to win
congrats, until next time ^^

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
So Super Mario World was not a mainline Mario title?

It's not Monster Hunter 5: Monster Hunter World in Japan. ;)

This argument is silly since it's by the main team, so it's still a traditional MH whether or not they ever make a MH5. The curious thing will be sales.

This.

Not claiming it's not a major title. It is. But calling it Monster Hunter 5 in Japan would have sent the message loud and clear "This is the future of the Monster Hunter series". I think this is them hedging their bets. If this game does very well, then there doesn't need to be a Monster Hunter 5 and this the World branding takes over. If it does not live up to expectations, Capcom can announce the "real" successor as MH5. Kind of the Nintendo "third pillar" strategy.

And I know the MH team behind the title gives it a status above that of something like Frontier but I don't think it automatically removes the possibility of it being a spin-off game. Several Tales games were announced as flagship titles but that status was scaled back when they sold poorly.

And as an extreme example, meant for comedy, "Link's Crossbow Training" was made by the same team as Twilight Princess. Is it mainline now?

Mainline or not, Monster Hunter World does seem like an evolution and definitely the most ambitious title in the series to date. I still find it to be graphically underwhelming and unappealing though, heh.

This is why the whole idea of categorizing something as 'mainline' or a 'spinoff' is ridiculous when it's fluid in retrospect and doesn't even matter.

Monster Hunter Portable was the original 'spinoff.'

So let's say MHW sells 2m on the west and only 1m in Japan,do you honestly believe that Capcom will abandon Nintendo(handhelds)?

I know this isn't Media Create Sales thread anymore, and it became the official MH thread, but changing topic.

After Sony E3, I've just realized that PS4 line up after summer is weak. The typical western games and... Ni no Kuni 2?

I guess GT Sport will release some day this year, but regarding to sales, weak line up.

Okami and I discussed this earlier, a few weeks back, but E3 hasn't changed the scene other than adding NnK2 which isn't anything exceptionally notable (after all, its a title for the west more than it is for Japan).

Not much added/announced for the rest of this year.

PS4 has a new Dragon Quest and new Monster Hunter within six months of each other. Anything else is a bonus.

Surprised there was no DW9 news to be honest though.

At some point, your charade stops being tolerable. Posting nonsense like this is approaching that line. You're in a sales thread, you should know why this isn't "good" even with your likely unlikely estimate of six months. Try more like eight.

I mean there's exclusive MH coming next year

After months of a relatively weak software line-up. That is the point that hiska was making, we've been through this song and dance before, and the "promise" of software does not solve an absence of it.

it does matter because they determine sales

u aren't gonna find many games where the mainline doesn't sell the most vs spinoffs

and mhp is a poor example, considering it is basically mhg with very minor differences, that isn't the case with mh:w compared to the mainline on handheld, unless you think there is a possibility it sells more

2m sales right there huh

thats the possibility of 2m ps4 consoles!

bonus indeed

On another note, it really shows how much the console market has gone in Japan now that Sony has a system with established million sellers Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid and Gran Turismo yet selling a fraction of as well as PS2 is the ambition.

So when Capcom made MHP you think they were making a conscious effort to move the 'mainline' series to PSP? lol. Then why didn't it have a number in the title?
They made a 'spinoff' and got lucky. It's now the 'mainline.' This is why these labels are useless.

No. No I don't. I think it would need to sell 5 million+ for it to make any logical sense for Capcom to kill the golden goose.

But then again this is Capcom...

How the hell is it nonsense? Those are literally the two biggest third party franchises in Japan, all they need it a little bit of stuff in between.

That wasn't "instead of the PSP", that was instead of the PS3. MH Tri had been announced (and shown) for the PS3 before the "big betrayalton". MHP3 still happened after that.

(And I don't believe MH Tri Wii was riskier than MHTri PS3 knowing the state of the japanese home console market in 2008)

Most of the major franchises have kind of been played already and we don't see the volume of retail games we once did. But yeah, the line up is pretty soft as of right now. I do think Ni No Kuni 2 is gonna perform pretty solid though.
