Next-gen Racing Graphics Face-off | (Next-gen means current-gen)

I watched the show last night. Forza Motorsport 7 looked nice but not astonishing. The lack of tyre marks through the rain disconnect the car from the track and, overall, the presentation looked flat, probably due to the lighting engine still not being class-leading.

It just feels a bit fake...like the new Need for Speed. The red rocks in that looked like they have been painted rather than the engine making them look organic. It looks cheated.

I'm also completely baffled. It was designed for PC from the ground up and although dynamic weather is a nice addition, still no dynamic time of day? I don't understand that at all...

...but it does look better than this. Still, the compromise here is dynamics across weather and time of day.

From a previous post here's those tyre marks...
Might want to talk to DRIVECLUB about how dynamic lighting can still look realistic and un-gamey.

...on an original PS4.

Now, just to even things up, I bet Kaz will confirm no dynamics at all in Gran Turismo Sport.

I haven't heard anything along these lines in interviews. Where did you come across it? Can you think of a reason to bother with a fully dynamic environmental lighting solution for static settings? It would be a pointless use of those resources when they have a 60 fps target. Categorically, pre-computed lighting for a static environment can give higher-quality results with less rendering effort (assuming the RAM/bandwidth is there to store the lightmaps).
Because they've said you can set the time of day before the race starts, there just won't be transition like in previous GT games and Driveclub.

The alpha effects are super disappointing in FM7. Hopefully they can be increased on PC.

When I saw the lightning strike light up the various water-sprays on Nurb I didn't notice a dramatic res gap, watching the 4K video on a bigger (well calibrated) 1080p screen. Anywhere you saw it stand out particularly?

That sounds like a pre-calculated scenario, to me. We may be basically talking about the same thing, but locking in the environmental lighting like that would indicate that's how it's handled (pre-calculating and caching those shadows). Several tracks in the previous games were built to allow the real-time transition, so I doubt they wanted to discard that, from a presentation/feature point of view.

Yeah . . . No. Get some 4K60 direct feed. It's heads and tales above DC in visual IQ alone. That's not to say DC isn't beautiful, but it's been showing its age for a hot minute.

Exactly, play DC on a 50"+ 4k screen, like I do, and it's a blurry / aliased mess. Darn near ugly at times. Snow racing still looks nice though...but vistas are a pixelated/blurry mess when you come over hills with a view.

Now take in the fact that this is a 60fps 4k "sim" game.

Although Forza 7 looks good, I don't think it looks any better than Driveclub.

Image quality is lightyears better than DriveClub.

From an audio/video comparison between FM 6 and 7. Not bad. More puddle traversal sounds, and more rattling/sputter as the engine revs up. Some spots look similar, others are a clear improvement.

I think I prefer the look of Forza 6, the spray is much more atmospheric. F7 looks like your car is not affected much by rain even if it storms around you (in the video, not in the gifs).

From playing the beta. For eg shadows are not baked, they move and flicker and cast shadows on moving objects, like the track marshals waving flags.

Driveclub looks great only on low-res gifs cause they hide all graphical issues the game has

and it is 30fps arcade racing game. and without open world.
Clearly there aren't tons of videos on YouTube comparing these racing games to one another. Know what other racer that is 30fps without open world but praised for its graphics? PGR. You would be hard pressed to find a video comparison where Driveclub isn't the best looking of the bunch.

In your gifs...DC looks so much faster even at 30fps......I wish SONY would announce a 1080p 60fps DC patch with 8xEQAA. and 16x AF. That would stun the crowd for sure.....

There's no big improvement in visuals here by any stretch of the imagination, it's simply Forza at 4K with a number 7 plastered over it...Funny enough, Forza 6 4k was absent from the MS conference and so was Horizon 3 at 4k....At 4k people really should not expect a jump from Forza 6, this still has to run on XB1S at 60fps and 4k incurs lots of bandwidth on a GPU especially at 60fps....

The lighting looks really off for a Sim game

Hard to assess asset quality this early but at a glance asset quality does not seem terribly increased from forza 6

They are falling behind. But I can bet for sure they just don't have the resources polyphony does

Youtube compression also eliminates Driveclub graphical disadvantages, which spoil image during gameplay.

Driveclub still has the best lighting and wheather effects comparing to other racing games.

LMAO. Considering that your're basing your opinion on tiny heavily compressed gifs, I'm sure you know what you're talking about.

Ok then. Impaired vision confirmed.

My goodness, as a series long GT fan... we're just at the point where Forza's environments look a generation ahead. I really don't feel that's an exaggeration either. Really becoming kind of painful.

It's not worth an XB1X to me at all but... good lord, that is a beautiful game.

Cross-post from the trailer thread, but VVV confirmed in comments on one of their YouTube vids that the dash-cam will be in the full release, it's not just for the show floor build:

Gonna need some gifs from this.

I would make some if I was any good at it. I don't know how some of the members here post such awesome quality gifs. I wish someone would be up to help a brotha out but it is what it is lol.

Honestly though...I wanna say something quick. I lean more on the Forza side of things.. but in my opinion, it doesn't matter which side you're on or if you're on neither or both.. both sides have a completely amazing looking exclusive racing game waiting in the wings. Man, I'm stunned by both of them. The detail and subtle vibrations of car components in Forza with the pristine image quality, and the amazing material and lighting shaders and realistic presentation of Gran Turismo. Driveclubs weather effects, and Forza Horizons vast openness. We got Project Cars 2 coming which has it's own positives and offers its own feel. Assetto Corsa as well. Need for Speed: Payback which has a cinematic action arcade look and feel... and I know there's others as well. It's been a crazy generation for racing fans. There's tons out there for everyone, and the competition benefits us all.

Thelastword throwing away his Xbox hate with complete garbage, covering it in some technical terms he doesn't seem to understand. Classic.

That GTS trailer destroys Forza 7 trailer it's not even funny.

Actual gameplay though, that's a different story.

If Microsoft made T10 truly go up against PD in terms of raw racing campaign, we'd actually have trailers that are similar to each other.

Whoever made the FM7 trailer seemed really confused on what audience they should cater it towards.
