Monster Hunter: World (PS4/XB1 early 2018, PC later, directed by MH4 lead planner)

I know it isn't. I wasn't being particularly serious. But then, I'm also not going to not buy a game I love just because it drops one feature. I mean, sure, local play is fun, but I don't see how it can be a deal breaker if you love MH anyway. It's not like people don't play other games online with their friends just fine. No one complains that you can't local play League of Legends.

Okay, but local multiplayer is a HUGE component of why I like Monster Hunter. Online is a "until I can play locally I guess this'll do". So if a game strips a feature, and that feature happens to be WHY I like that game, then.... yeah, it is a deal breaker.

Matrixman.Exe still not talking. I am really worried about MHXX.

Who is that?

But it is though. Everything they have said so far is exactly what a lot of us are looking for as the franchise evolves.

I don't want stealth, glowing tracking bits and Rambo machine guns in my MH, thank you...

Not saying this game will suck, we'll see how it turns out, but I'm not the only one who's concerned. Especially since they showed almost no melee combat at all.

As far as I know there are currently no plans. That's not gospel though and could change. That's just as much as I'm aware of at this time.

If MHXX doesn't release over here, then it's a damned shame.

The Switch was practically tailor made for Monster Hunter, and not getting it here would crush my dreams.

Even if all it was, was ENG text in the Japanese version, I'd be set because let's face it, all my friends would totally take the five minutes to "import" it off the eShop... but not if it's JPN text only.

To counter, stealth has been in since one. We don't know much of anything about "glowing tracking bits" to make a hard case against it. If anything it could be a different way to do different hud elements. Who's to say what that machine gun was? This might be a great new way to be gunner class. Being able to move a bit while shooting. "All weapons styles are back" so we win there. Be cautious but don't say this isn't the way a lot more of us want it to go. We have had 4+ great ones no reason to doubt the new.

Not being able to play it with friends outside of my place is the thing that worries me. I'd sometimes play MH with my brother and cousin and had a blast.

Yeah this doesn't seem to be for people who play locally.

I never play local multiplayer so I'm good, but I feel for those that need it.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
After looking at the direct feed trailer, I want them to up the contrast and improve the lighting. I can tell this MonHun team is struggling with their first non-portable/PS2 tier hardware, and the result is its leaning towards looking like a PS3 title in some places rather than PS4.

Excited to be rid of zones though as they have always been shit and an obstacle to gameplay rather than anything tactical or pace related as hardcores will whine. Hardcores were the enemy of lock-on features also, but here he are.

I really hope they have some cool gameplay bits to show off next week to quell some of the concerns that you guys have.

I just need a very basic 30 minute gameplay video of a standard hunt with no editing.
I need to see that before I say anything about this game one way or another.

So you aren't a fan of the combat and crafting or any of the gameplay? It's not like it's a typical game you can get plenty of. Personally, I never really got the appeal of the local multiplayer so much. Was only ever able to get a few hours play in with people before they wanted to do something else, so did most of my multiplayer online where I could play at my own pace.

I mean, if local multiplayer is all you really liked about the game then there are plenty of local multiplayer games for you to fill that void. I mean, it sounds like you enjoyed Monster Hunter in spite of the game itself, at which point I'd ask why you're even that attached to the franchise to begin.

Technically true, but I don't think the "stealth" we've had so far counts. It's not a meaningful game mechanic and no one ever uses it seriously.

Fine, I might be a bit overly pessimistic. As I said I didn't dismiss the entire game and I hope it ends up great, but I'd feel better knowing I could fall back on MHXX for more classic-style MH. Now that it's apparently unlikely to get localized, well, that worries me. :\

I saw just 1 image of a friend that took a picture of the rathalos on the Sony E3 booth, anyone knows if there are more images or something? I would love to see more

No it isn't. There are currently no plans to do so at Capcom so don't get your hopes up. Or just hope that Nintendo steps in.

WTF is this tho. Seriously Capcom? Not localizing the Switch version I might be able to understand but both versions being hung out to dry? :(

Hopefully World has the Style System in some form so I can at least try out Brave Gunlance.

And this is why MH World exists. There are numerous elements of MH that were never fleshed out in any meaningful capacity because of hardware limitations. With the ability to transition into a fully open map they're able to implement stealth in a proper manner.

It won't be just stealth that gets an overhaul and upgrade but other things as well, like monster riding too and other things.

I mean if they balance it alright, stealth could be a useful mechanic for setting up traps and laying down food.

I don't see what's wrong with it.

Personally I'd rather not have the Style system or special attacks in World. They were okay in Generations, but made it feel too... gamey... I guess. I like Monster Hunter for the fantasy of hunting giant monsters and making hats out of them. I liked how realistic the combat was. Which, I guess is why I'm not the biggest fan of insect glaive, dual blades and longsword, since they all had weird super power elements involved with them.

Yeah but... I don't want stealth... like, at all xD

Hmmmmm. Ok, mayyyyybe for things like that it'd be OK, but even so, I'm iffy. And not, like, avoiding monsters and having to sneak up on them or whatnot. I actually enjoy stealth in some games but I just don't want it in MH, at least not in the way they showed in the video. Which is admittedly just a short clip but still, it was deliberately chosen for the trailer after all.

It's not like stealth is going to be necessary. It's just a way to avoid encounters that you can't be bothered with (especially since now you can't just zone to avoid the pack of jaggi that you aggroed) and to prep areas pre-fight.

I mean using it to avoid small monsters to get to gathering points doesnt' really matter, you just run past them and ignore them anyways.
And stealth killing one velocprey before the rest notices you would be such a dumb waste of your time, who cares.

The only real way it would negatively effect the game is if you used it like some WoW rogue vanish bullshit in the middle of a fight, or if you could use well carrying things.
And they way they have neutered egg quests over the years, it would barely even make it any easier then how brain dead it is right now.

Normally I would agree but the Gunlance specials and styles (Blast Dash, Dragon's Breath, and Adept specifically) addressed my major issues with the weapon. I had a LOT more fun with Gunlance in Gen than in 4 or 3. Plus Brave style for Gunlance looked bonkers, with reload-parry evades and rapid-fire shelling.

But I wouldn't really be worried about the possibility of no styles in World if this nega-bombshell of XX's non-localization hadn't been dropped. And I'm still looking forward to World regardless, it's just a shame that I apparently won't get my hands on XX anytime soon.

Oh man I forgot about styles.

Man I really hope they don't return.

Keep it for generations, or maybe cherry pick some stuff from them and add them back as skills via weapon/armor.

it just occurred to me, with Sony not playing ball with crossplay, the player base will be smaller and divided won't it?

I think the community will reside mostly in the PS4 version and PC second whenever that one comes out.

But hopefully Xbox owners will buy this as well. Hopefully.

Since it's cross-regions servers you can bet PS4 will have a pretty big userbase advantage from Japan alone, not to mention it comes out first on PS4 and Xbox.

So what's the deal as of now?

I only ever briefly tried out MH3U and while I liked the overall gameplay loop I personally wouldn't mind some modernized graphics, controls, an upgraded quest system, and non-segmented environments. That's IF Capcom actually preserves the general loop of traditional MH -- resource gathering, preparation, loot, etc. What I'm hoping is that this continues the recent trend of Japanese publishers more intelligently westernizing their franchises without forgetting what makes them special. We've seen this with Zelda, Resident Evil, and Metal Gear. Personally I think Lost Planet and Dragon's Dogma are indications MH will follow suit, as both franchises to me always felt like good balances between modern western controls and Japanese action game playability.

I also understand how fans are stuck on the traditional way to play MH. It seems like a finely balanced game and I hope that traditional audience continues to receive traditional MH games in the future, presumably on Switch. We'll see how this two-path approach works for the franchise.

Someone else already said Capcom has been trying to sell the MH-style game to the west for a while through Dragon's Dogma and Lost Planet 2. I think both of those games were slightly ahead of their time, particularly LP2 when you consider today's focus on multiplayer live-games. Best-case scenario: this ends up being Capcom's Destiny.

I agree that styles made the gunlance more playable, however, I'd rather they just fix gunlance, since it's my favourite weapon alongside Charge Blade. Haven't actually looked into XX yet since I don't have a 3DS anymore and wasn't planning on getting a Switch (ironically was going to hold off on one until they announced a new Monster Hunter generation, funny old world), so don't know what Brave stance entails. Most of the time I just rolled with aerial anyway for hilarity's sake.

Amazing. I'm now convinced he's wrong for valuing local co-op and finding it a big deal to his enjoyment. Thank you.

Yeah, Astral should play BlazBlue/Guilty Gear to fill his MH void.

Am I missing a joke, or is your post it? I honestly can't tell.

If my wife and I will need:

2 PS4 systems
2 copies of Monster Hunter World
2 active subscriptions to PSN+

to play a monster hunter game I'm afraid we won't be able to follow Capcom into this new territory.
