Why would employers offer healthcare if there's a public option
The same reason they offer other benefits. I've worked in two places where the government provided single-payer or heavily subsidized healthcare, and my employer in the two places still provided private health insurance.

"All of the bad parts of Obamacare are gone," Trump, at energy roundtable, about health care bill. "Essentially, it's a repeal-and-replace."

Yep, clueless

The #AmazonWashingtonPost, sometimes referred to as the guardian of Amazon not paying internet taxes (which they should) is FAKE NEWS!

...What?

Btw I had a dream where Democrats won 45 seats in the House and 3 in the Senate. Keep in mind my political dreams have a terrible track record.

I think I realized what one of the generational problems is here: The young'ns don't remember 2005, when Bush's attempt to privatize Social Security just up and died.

Even though I was 15 at the time, I don't remember it. I do remember learning about the after effects of the failure in AP Political Science though.

What's with all thes people coming out of he woodwork saying BS on Russia?

As far as I've seen, it's just journalists and the like. Maybe they're getting bored?

Mueller plugging the leaks is bad for their business. The collusion stuff is serving them much better right now.

I'd like to propose an alternative characterization of Mitch McConnell: that like most of his conference -- and most Hill Republicans in general -- he's really only good at obstruction and not actual governance.

What's with all thes people coming out of he woodwork saying BS on Russia?

Frankly, every opinion on Russia that isn't Robert Mueller's is worthless anyway.

Ding ding ding. You think Van Jones knows jack shit about anything? CNN is an entertainment network who pick up the real stories after WaPo and NYT report on them.

I mean, we're not waiting for the 5pm oppo droppo from god damn CNN.

Yeah it's part of the reason I've remained skeptical they actually pass medicaid cuts. This is just a different breed it seems though.

Not journalists, cable television anchors chosen for their ability to garner ratings.

Actual journalists from the NYT and WaPo and WSJ and AP and Reuters have said nothing of the sort.

People want to defend CNN because Trump bullies them, but even though they may not be "fake news," they still err on the side of infotainment and drama, hence "both sides" and debate commercials that look like wrestling promos. They never stopped being trash.

Yup. I don't give a shit what some commentator on TV thinks about Russia. Van Jones's take isn't any more valid than yours or mine. If someone got a secret recording of Mueller saying he thinks the investigation is BS (lol that's never going to happen), that would mean something.

I'm ashamed that I chose the word journalist in my post because that's honestly not what I intended.

CNN has about three good ones and I wasn't talking about any of them.

I think I realized what one of the generational problems is here: The young'ns don't remember 2005, when Bush's attempt to privatize Social Security just up and died.

I remember that fight well, but even so this battle makes me much much much more nervous than that ever did. I think quite a lot has changed in the years since.

In broad terms though I think you're right. There's probably a high correlation between the "it's all over we're fucked they thought of everything" nihilists and the youngs.

TBH I can't imagine how I would see politics if I didn't live the Bush years as an "adult" (18 during the 2000 election). That experience really colors how I see almost everything. It's probably hard to overstate how that difference of that lived experience explains differences in political views. To varying degrees I imagine it's why olds were a little more nervous of Bernie's tax hikes, less likely to complain about Obama being a sell out, more frustrated with the never-ending primary, more understanding of comments coming out of the 90s, and yet also more resolute in the face of a massive loss.

Maybe if Trump blasts Murkowski enough, she really will go Jim Jeffords. As I said yesterday, she pretty much hates party leadership after they supported a Tea Party loon over her in 2010. I got bored once and watched a Dan Rather interview where she seethed about it, and her eyes looked angrier than usual.

Maybe Sue Collins can channel her predecessor and Grandmother of the Moderate Darlings Margaret Chase Smith and deliver a modern Declaration of Conscience speech against Trump. Except she would take forever to read it, people would get bored and call her a snowflake, and nothing would happen.

Tax credits? Work would have to be done. There would have to be a difference in plans. I like the idea of universal catastrophic coverage as well as smaller, more affordable plans through the government. If people want to take that route, they could.
I'm dumb. If there are tax credits for employers, why spend any money on public healthcare plans? You're just doubling your work. If the private healthcare plans are just supposed to be better versions of the public ones then why subsidize it at all?

Someone explain to me what the original Obama plan was.

Besides Obama when has a president ever been able to enact significant changes to entitlement programs with only their own party? It took winning 60 votes in the Senate to legislate ACA. Republicans have 52 and their leader is fucking Trump.

Healthcare is not taxed.

Therefore, it's a more efficient use of money to spend it on health coverage than regular income. So if your employees like better-than-government health plans, it's more efficient for the employer to help provide them.

I could see them doing this if it changed party control in the Senate. Right now there wouldn't be much of a point other than a stick in the eye of McConnell and Trump.

Which I suppose is as good a reason as any to do it...

But what's your job?

Interpreter.

Pretty much every country with single payer still allows employers to deduct costs of providing private healthcare for a tax benefit to the employer. Many countries also do not tax it as income.

So if you had the option of getting $50,000 (taxed) + $5000 (untaxed) in private healthcare or $55,000 salary (taxed), you would choose the first option most of the time as you get a greater benefit.

Well, Moderate Chase Smith (what I shall demand the history books call her henceforth) never changed parties but supported space exploration and Medicare. But she also pretty much wanted to nuke the Soviet Union, so they always disappoint you in some way.

Do you remember that hilarious Politico article about Hillary's first 100 days? Where they speculate that Collins and Murkowski would switch parties to give the Democrats a 50-50 Kaine majority, only to then immediately squander it by nominating Booker for SCOTUS (allowing Christie to appoint his replacement and flip the chamber again) who somehow gets by on a 50-50 vote that includes himself.

That was announced back around his retirement announcement

That is not true as a blanket statement. It is a largely true only for employer-sponsored healthcare and even then there are big exceptions. For instance, my HSA contributions are taxed at the state level, and the premiums I pay for my gf are not only post-tax but I also get the luxury of paying income taxes on the employer-covered portion too

There was no announcement, just rumors. If there was an announcement about being employed by a company while you still are scheduled to cast votes on legislation, I think there would be ethical issues.

I somehow missed it. Would you please link?

Surely no one could write something so outrageous without a truckload of irony.

Whose saying BS?

I just hate the daily "OPPPO DROPPO" calls and the stupid tick tick tick nonsense. I worry that its turning the left into their own brand of rabid conspiracy theorists.

CNN being trash is the one thing we should all be in agreeance with Trump on. He's just been so fixated on them versus actual journalists because he's preoccupied more with his image and entertainment outreach than being challenged with facts. He easily dismisses those.

Fox News has two. So they have one more than Fox News. This should be celebrated? I think not.
