Where are the nice people online?

A newspaper posts an article about increased fees for being in the EU, the comment section is a dumpster fire, with people going all in with conspiracy theories and nonsense.

Someone posts a video on YouTube, and all the comments are the same.

Someone Tweets on Twitter, same thing.

How come it seems that you never see, or hear, from the people on the other side of the spectrum? Go to an Hbomberguy video, and his comment section is like 30% idiots that's mass disliking his stuff, but if you go to a Sargon video, you never see Hbomberguy's followers doing the same.

Why is this hate so one sided online?

Nice people are either timid, get drowned out by the hate, or know better than to post in toxic comment sections.

Also excessive downvotes on YouTube comments eventually hides them, unless I'm wrong.

I guess the nice comment is often assumed to be redundant.

Plus algorithms will push up comments people interact with regardless of quality. A comment of "I hate Jews" will get far bigger engagement than "good job dude".

Anonimity makes people act like dicks.

I come from an era long before the internet, so I speak online as I would in person, there is a whole generation that don't.

Nope. Facebook has proven people have no problem showing their full names while being racist, sexist shitbags.

There it is.

There's no chance of having a discussion to change the minds of those twats, so nobody bothers.

Because comment sections are basically guaranteed to be toxic, so the toxic people flock to be toxic and the not toxic people stay away.

Toxic people are much more motivated to spread their filth than good people are to bother trying to clean it up.

Good moderation and from the media companies is how to disinfect but no one wants to pay someone to do it so here we are

Nice people usually read or watch something and then go about their day. The loonies posting shit are a tiny minority of the people that consumed said media; they just seem super prevalent because they're the only ones who bother commenting.

90% of the people you see who have time to go out and comment on these sort of things lead sad unfulfilling and frustrating lives. Espousing toxicity and hate online is their outlet - Very few people who have fulfilling jobs or are leading socially active/sex lives tend not to have the time to waste on such pointless endeavours.

A significant number of media groups use Facebook integrated comment systems with real names and all that jazz, so saying it's anonymity is not accurate.

This isn't true. Facebook has verily proven this statement is false.

Maybe anonimity is the wrong word, but it's probably to do with the lack of contact with that person, the buffer that the internet gives between people means that people have a faux sense of safety and can say what they want, they are sitting safe and warm in their house miles away from the person they are abusing, I'd imagine most people wouldn't say 99% of the shit they say on the internet in person.

Disconnect. We don't think of each other as real people online. We might as well be talking to robots.

I usually assume sane people simply roll their eyes and scroll away whenever they come across people like that in comment sections. Which is why you rarely see them.

Because most of the time, there is no reason to comment. If you read a story online, mostly the people who disagree or hate on it feel the need to let that know. Others just read it and move on.

It's the same in the real world actually. People who are assholes are the most visible, while all the regular people just go about their day.

If you're commenting it's usually to express dissatisfaction or unhappiness. Combine that with the internet letting people be open in a way you don't get in reality.

Most people irl are dicks. Humans are mostly shit.

I know it comes across a bit "old man yells at cloud", but I can't help but think that in 20 years we might have realized that social media is a problem that we should have solved 20 years ago.

I'm sort of nice, which is why I avoid almost all comment sections anywhere. I'm not wasting my time reading that hateful shit. It'll just upset me.

Sad people taking out there frustrations on the internet tend to be louder, since that's the only fulfilling part of their loveless, pitiful lives. You can say the most horrendous shit on the internet without any consequences, unless you're a internet celebrity.

See i would have said neogaf... but then yesterday happened with a former member and the fbi...so im not so sure anymore

Im nice thogh OP! Pm me to chat

Neogaf is a tough one because, like literally everywhere else, the comments that get the most controversy and hate are the most visible. Reasonable and well mannered posts may be entirely skipped or glossed over because they're not on the fringes.

Cunningham's Law is true here like anywhere else also.
"Cunningham's Law states 'the best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question; it's to post the wrong answer.'" Basically people love to correct others more than answer questions. I can be loose with facts sometimes that I'm 90% sure about (maybe I was around Boomers too much growing up and still remember life before the internet) so sometimes I'll post something here and get the inevitable "what the fuck are you talking about?" response. I still get a right answer in the end though!

https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Cunningham's_Law

There are a whole lot of nice people here though. I've mostly found them in the community threads or playing games online with them. Also, lurkers and readers are still part of GAF and they might be the nicest people ever too but just don't post.

It's been long established that you can be an asshole in the internet ans no one will complain about it. It's like anything else, if you want a place not to have rampant bad stuff, you have to make people know that that kind of behavior is out of line. But since the very dawn of the internet, we have been doing very little to up the quality of discourse, "free speech" and all that.

Aiii

So not worth it
Nice people don't bother with comment sections, because why would they want to?

Comment sections are for the people who enjoy shouting at clouds.
