Do we expect Splatoon to be the next major Nintendo I.P.?

I also think it's fun to have this thread come up near Splatoon launch. After all, the OP was asking if this would be the next major IP for Nintendo.

Splatoon 2 might nudge Splatoon 1 to 5m in several years would be cool to hit that milestone.

Still fantastic sales especially on one of the worst selling consoles ever. It's a major achievement for a new IP on such a system.

Edit: Splatoon also is one of my most favorite franchises of all time and i only played the first one for the first time a few months ago.

With the Switch being so popular and in the hand of so many new players, Splatoon 2 will be much more popular than the original.

The game is easy to get into and can be quite party-competitive like Mario Kart, it will be the next big party game.

Switch will probably outsell WiiU the first year, so Splat2 could have over 10million lifetime sales if Switch keeps the steam up

I never thought it would bomb. Granted, I didn't think it'd be as big as it is today, but before it came out, I figured that if Kid Icarus Uprising could sell over a million units, so could Splatoon. I just didn't imagine it would go so far beyond that.

Except MK's local mode is much better than Splatoon, unless Splatoon2 adds local co-op, which atm there haven't been any signs of.

First few pages are amazing reading! I understand the scepticism but this shows how dangerous it is to rule out new IP.

GOTY contender and over 1 million sold copies by the end of the year.

No doubt in my mind, this will be the most successful Wii U game for 2015 both critically and sales wise.

Nope this is easily going to outsell XBX and Mario Maker

Don't underestimate the squids.
The sequel is going to be the first game in ages to sell over 5 million in Japan, personally expect it to be the most successful game on the Switch in Japan

Wow, I was an Splatoon doubter? It's one of my favorite games of all time and I can't wait for Splatoon 2 now. Guess I'm very glad to have been wrong back then.

I'm a bit surprised since I really liked what I saw when they first showed it off, maybe I just didn't see it selling well and that's why I said it was being sent to die. Still, couldn't have been any more wrong lol.

Keep your negative comments to yourself, past me.

Since this thread got bumped, how much do you guys think Splatoon 2 could sell lifetime? I personally am quite bullish, and think it can reach 10 million lifetime, maybe a bit more even, with an even larger percentage of that number coming from Japan (40%-50%). It could very well sell over 5 million this year alone imo.

Local multiplayer with both split screen and local wireless has been confirmed for Turf Wars since day one.
Really? Before I get my hopes up can you link me to some official info? I've been asking this since the reveal and never got a positive answer, it's my #1 request for the game :D

Edit: saw jariw's post..so splitscreen needs 2 Switches? That's not good.

I don't really dare make a prediction because I feel it will depend on how quickly Nintendo can overcome its production problems. If it takes until fall next year to even sell 5M Switches in Japan, it will likely not reach that percentage. If Nintendo sells an additional 16M switches this FY, then yeah it may be possible.
I'm thinking more along 7M myself though.

The more I think about it, the better of a feeling that I have for this game's sales. A playable demo on the eShop would probably do wonders for this game's sales as well.

I do think that it can sell 1 million copies by the end of the generation.

Past me was onto something. But I still under-predicted its success.

And I predicted a demo would help the game too, only a few days before the Global Test-fire.

Well, you have to keep in mind, Splatoon came out during what was perhaps by far Nintendo's darkest hour in their history of consoles. Naturally, most people lost faith in Nintendo being able to come out with a new breakout hit, especially on a failed console like the Wii U.

If the system wasn't such a failure, I don't think people would of been quite as down on Splatoon.

This thread also showcases that the GAF consensus is usually incorrect when it comes to Nintendo:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1333545

Basically, the opposite is true.

After Wii U, betting on Nintendo to have a highly successful console would be a bad gamble. Guessing that Switch would not be very successful was perfectly sensible.

When Golden State was up 3-1 on Cleveland, you would have been an idiot to put money on Cleveland coming back. But sometimes crazy things happen. That doesn't mean betting crazy is a good idea, even if it occasionally pans out.

Nah, not really. It was pretty obvious that Switch would be more successful than Wii U, GCN, N64, etc., just by the fact that it's a system meant to eventually replace both home console and handheld. That thread was simply hot take after hot take and a lot of users looked really silly to me, even then.

Aostia

El Capitan Todd
Aostia is probably still serious.

Ah ah! I never expected 5 millions sold on the wiiu install base but I was also pretty confident in it not bombing

The sequel will be even more successfull

Now if we talk about some crazy Multimillion seller expectations about ARMS in the MC threads ...

It's never been revealed or confirmed. All notions of local wireless play has one screen per person.

How much do you expect ARMS to sell? I was at 4-4.5 million, but I think I might be too high with that, and it is probably more like 3-3.5 million lifetime.

People really thought Xenoblade Chronicles X would outsell Splatoon?

Jesus Christ

That doesn't surprise me really, XCX at least had a somewhat-established name behind it already, a more "mature" look (plus those early gifs with flyovers of massive environments) and it fed into people's fetish for big expansive open-world games. Splatoon looked "small" and cutesy by comparison, of course it wasn't going to receive a ton of credit prior to its release.

I'd like to say that I think people know better by now, but you still see some opinions about Splatoon as a game/franchise floating around that prompt a definite head-scratch. At the very least I don't think anybody can call for Splatoon 2 to bomb.

Source for that?

Wikipedia lists 4.8 million by 2017 for Splatoon and Halo 5 selling 5 million in its first 3 months.

I don't think this is true, but the fact that the two are even close is pretty incredible.

Halo 5 shipped 5 million units in 3 months, Splatoon shipped 4.8 million in just under 2 years, so this is not correct.

Colonel Mustard has been demoted to Lieutenant.

Ah. I thought Splatoon was just over 5 million. My bad.

Honestly the posts 2-3 pages back after it was obvious the game was gonna be big and people were saying "well it'll be somewhat successful but still niche tier not the next big thing" are almost more funny then the "bomba" post

Yeah, I never thought ARMS would do Splatoon numbers.
