Very sorry to hear about anyone who was a victim of fraud on the part of a user. Although there is nothing we can do as moderators to solve the situation [since, obviously, caveat emptor and we don't control Google Wallet or whatever], rest assured the account has been disabled permanently and we have recorded his details to try to catch future re-registrations. We do not have an accurate name or any information that would be useful in disputes beyond what you would already have as part of your payment, and the email does not seem like it would be easy to connect to a real life human, so unfortunately I don't think we can be of too much assistance here, but we do have IP addresses and other mechanisms to try to catch re-regs.

Cloggerdude notified me that he's writing something about payment method pro/cons, which I think is a good idea, and in the mean time I personally only pay with Paypal (and never paying Friends/Family) because they have probably the fastest and easiest dispute resolution policy.

If anyone else was affected, I encourage you to come forward here and coordinate with other victims as part of your dispute claim with Google Wallet.

Thank you.

Yeah, I'm just going to do the normal PayPal method from now on. I'll even eat the business fee if it means avoiding a scam.

First off, it is too bad to hear that people were scammed. Hopefully, everyone gets their money back.

I know this is hindsight and perhaps not very helpful, after the fact, but in one of Corpekata's recent posts, they have the following:

Corpekata said:
Can take Paypal or Google Wallet (latter preferred as it is instant to my bank, so might knock off a couple bucks for that method).

It may be common to see people mentioning things about preferred payment methods, but it is a painful hindsight to read. If Google Wallet does goes instantly into a bank, this is most likely why it was used. Offering to knock prices down, if used, shows a potential sign of desperation or urgency. This makes Google Wallet payment quite the risky payment to use, for larger purchases.

Just wanted to say that Im really sorry for everybody who has been scammed, but glad it seems you are at least getting your money back!

I reported him to a mod a few months ago with sufficient evidence, didn't know if it was appropriate to call him/her out publicly in the thread but I regret not doing so now.

Welp. Is this a regular occurrance in BSTgaf? Other than the price, were there any other red flags?

No, this isn't a common occurrence at all. We definitely have issues every now and then, but they are usually on a much smaller scale. This is the biggest scam that I can recall in a very long time.

As for other red flags, really the only other thing that stood out was his request to pay using Google Wallet. That was the thing that almost made me not go through with it, but I still did in the end.

IMO, It's always appropriate-- even just to get the dialogue going.

If another Gaffer steals your money here we should ALWAYS call them out, especially if you see them still doing business.

Edit-beaten

This is the biggest scam that I can recall in a very long time.

Probably the guy a while back using a bot to get top-of-page posts and selling education (or whatever) Microsoft keys that later got revoked.
Granted that was spread out over a longer period of time, and the impact to each individual person being significantly less, but it impacted far more people, and I would guess that the dollar amount ended up being higher as well. Although, I suppose the people who bought the keys at least got use of the product for a bit before it was revoked en masse.

Well, those were low stakes.

Wasn't there that idiot not long ago that tried to sell blue PS3s to multiple people, and when people called him out, and then changed his story that he actually did have multiples of them, and people needed to calm down, and then not long after he sort of just disappeared into the void?

I think that guy is actually still around though, so not sure exactly what happened with all that in the end.

My rule of thumb is to avoid juniors entirely. Next do research the member you buy from if they're not too active on here by looking at the feedback list and thread. If there is nothing there and the deal seems too good to be true or something like that I would be cautious. After lurking these threads for awhile I guess you can kind of tell which people are legit or what not.

Assuming this is also him (and it likely is), this isn't the first time Corpekata has pulled this shit.

Probably won't be the last time either. Best of luck to everyone who's looking for a refund.

Damn thats the same monitor i bought from him. Definitely scammed.

Thanks. That's (mostly) reassuring.

He claimed to need money for upcoming debts, but he also was selling his cards for much less than the normal rate for a used card.

Also claimed to have no knowledge of fair pricing for his items, and welcomed all offers because he needed to sell the cards so badly. So basically, "I dunno how much these cards are worth, lol is this a good price? pm me, lol"

I generally avoid junior sellers as well. but this incident sort of challenges the idea that a member with history means they won't be a scammer.

I know that the general rule is to not knock someone's hustle or question their sale unless you have good reason, but maybe we should become more open in asking questions anyway.

Google Wallet Support got back and has refunded my account. Still need to wait a few days for the money to appear so still not clear yet but definitely some good news.

For those who have yet to contact Google Wallet, please do so. I just provided the fact that I have not received my items that I paid for and received a notification that the dispute was resolved in my favor about 6-7 hours later.

Also I think we would need to reemphasize that PayPal Goods and Services is still the best method of payment for both buyer/seller protection. Shit happens though so I'm glad the issue was resolved for me. Hopefully no one else has trouble.

I will still be trading on here as B/S/T has been great for many years and just think this was just a one-off. So hopefully people are not too discouraged.

When did you contact them? I did just a few hours ago and haven't heard back yet, but hopefully I get word tomorrow.

I'll still be on B/S/T as well. Obviously I don't think anything should be enforced as far payment method goes, but I agree that an emphasis on using Goods and Services and making that more common would be helpful to prevent this kind of thing from happening again. Whenever I end up selling something on here I'll be more than happy to pay that few bucks for someone else's peace of mind and normalize that method a bit.

PayPal Goods and Services is only the best method, if you're the buyer. If you're the seller, you have to worry about the other side charging back their money (The reason why I ask for friends & family).

Wow, I missed some stuff. O_O Crazy he's been active here and on CAG for so long, I PM'd him some time back about a game but never got a reply back. If he's legit in the U.S he's dun fucked up. I was thinking maybe his accounts were compromised here and on CAG but going off that eBay link nope, this isn't a new thing.

Damn looks like that guy was doing small transactions for a while to build up trust and then decided to cash out by doing some mass scamming. That's fucked up.
That's just crazy to be a member here and bide time to end up doing this but if that eBay page is his and it probably is, he's not new to this.

Right, the biggest thing I sold here (my 970) was sold to someone who's a Junior. Being a member isn't a badge of honor or that they're not a shitty person.

Thats pretty elaborate to go through all that trouble just to rip off people with $400 cards, after seeing his ebay page this guy seems like a major scumbag

PayPal Goods and Services is only the best method, if you're the buyer. If you're the seller, you have to worry about the other side charging back their money (The reason why I ask for friends & family).

Goods and Services in theory protects buyer and seller. As long as seller documents transaction well PayPal is supposed to investigate and decide who is telling the truth. While it is true PayPal more often errs on the side of the buyer and not the seller, it is not always the case.

Using friends and family to sell things is a violation of PayPal t&s and if buyers complain the seller could have their account terminated (I have never heard of this happening though).

Personally, if someone insists on friends and family even if I offer to pay fees I assume they're trying to rip off the buyer because they're refusing to be accountable, even when there is no financial penalty to them.

Obviously vast majority, including you, aren't trying to rip anyone off. But insisting on goods and services is the only reliable way for buyers to protect themselves and I strongly encourage everyone to do so on any substantial transactions no matter how much feedback user has (I do use f&f for a few dollar steam keys etc. Because there if I get ripped off I'm not being hurt that much).

The ports on my gigabyte mobo are kind of janky. I dunno if that's what he's talking about, though.

It is not regular occurrence. Being super cheap for a product isn't always bad.......I sold my KS8000 used on here for only $500 albeit it was local pickup, they went used for a grand!!!!! Hell I even gave away my GTX680 when I got my 970, the card on GAF as well could have easily sold at the time still for $250-$300.

There is always a couple bad eggs to the thousand amazing ones we have. I think going forward for small purchases F&F through paypal is ok for low purchases but anything over the amount of say $100-$150 I would say do merchant purchase and people should use a calculator for the percentage of it to adjust accordingly in the selling price.

Also junior or not junior makes no difference. I've had many users here now full members sell me stuff at junior level with absolutely no issues at all.

Just adding to the ongoing discussion, about 2 months ago I purchased a PS4 Pro from corpekata and it's scary realizing I could have been easily scammed at that point. I also paid through Google wallet but only because he had a trail of positive feedbacks and was a long time member of gaf. Fortunately I received my system safe and sound after a week or so but I'll definitely be more careful especially with big purchases like that.

For what it's worth, Google Wallet support seems really helpful and have been super friendly to me. Apparently they're waiting on a response from Corpekata and if they don't get one they're going to shut his account down. The rep I really to said I'll be getting an email from the dispute team either today or tomorrow and my refund soon after that.

Not instant, but it's nice that they're responsive and helpful.

Anyway though I think I'll just be getting a 1080 off Amazon instead, process aren't too bad and I like their customer support.

Edit - got my money back. :) Eat shit Corpekata. Scammer bitch.

Yeah you can never be too safe. I stick strictly to PayPal, and I personally never send as goods and services. I'd rather pay the small fee and be covered. I also don't do the whole you ship first if you're new thing that some forums like to implement. Money is always exchanged first for me, whether I'm the buyer or seller.
