Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana US + EU Demo

Demo for the game is now up in English in western territories.

US Demo

EU Demo

Full game is due out on the 12th of next month in the US and the 15th in EU. Digital versions seem to go up a day earlier in both territories.

Game does feature Dual Audio before anyone asks.

Can't wait to try the demo and for the game. I think you still get extra pre-order goodies if you pre-order.

There's a Launch Edition, so physical copies come packed with an artbook and sound track sampler.

The digital version comes with sampler songs, a PSN Theme and 7 PSN avatars

and there's "Adol DLC" that will be free to everyone for a week post launch

Adol's Silver Armor - The memorable, original armor Adol wore in Ys.
Adol's Adventurer Clothes - Jaunty clothing that Adol wears on his adventures around the world.
Adol's Survival Kit - Obtain items that are useful when adventuring on a deserted island. Survival Kit includes: Blade Ring II (x1), Empty Bottle (x1), and Iron Ore (x10).

Not sure what bonuses Steam version will get though, if any. I'm sure it's on the page tho

Did they ever released a Ys Seven costume for Adol? That's one is my favorite.

Tried it out. Kinda cool. Could be a great podcast game.

Celceta soundtrack was much better tho.

I actually prefer some of the songs on the Ys 8 OST to Celceta's:

Also reminder: in NG+ you can use equipment to let Adol play the game solo - and he switches attack types without changing characters, so if you really just want to solo the game with Adol as a game mode you can.

So I liked Ys celceta on the Vita and just tried this demo. Will I be okay getting the vita version?

You'll be okay, but Vita version isn't 60FPS, it's 30. It's not always 30, either, as the game has drops. The loadings are a bit worse on the Vita, too. And above all, you'll be missing some content which is exclusive to the PS4 version. Namely a more fleshed out Dana story and a couple dungeons which are unique to the PS4 ver.

THAT SAID, the game on the Vita was actually kind of impressive graphically for what it tried to do. It definitely runs better than Celceta, while being a much, much prettier and ambitious. The new story added on PS4 is alright, but at the end of the day it doesn't really make the game into a completely new experience, so if you think you can live with a bit less backstory, a couple dungeons/boss, the Vita version is still pretty nice (and cheaper).

How's the translation? Early reviews seem very positive, but I know the localization was a concern for some.

Thanks for making the thread OP.

Anyways I already beat it this morning, so I will leave here my impressions from the other thread:

Honestly, this is hitting all the right spots. Gameplay, graphics, exploration, music...coming from beating Ys VII one week ago and Celteta earlier this month I'm having trouble adjusting to the buttons layout, but that's really my only nitpick at the moment.

After beating the demo: Really good. I went with nightmare and found it to be surprisingly easier than what I expected. The boss of the demo did gave me trouble though.

The castways story give me vibes from Ys VI, my personal favourite from the non-party games. Exploration seems to be really improved and the point where they focused more. A mayor set-up from Celteta wich honestly I'm going to have trouble for touching it again after this game comes out.

Really excited for 12 september.

Also: Opencritic has already three reviews listed.

The Vita version has less content since it came out almost a year earlier. If you don't mind that, it's fine.

Wow, thanks for the replies. I guess I've got some thinking to do.

Is the extra stuff for the PC version too?

Yeah, the PC version is based on the PS4 version, so it includes everything the PS4 one has. It's just the Vita version was released in Japan almost a year before it came out on PS4 -- so Falcom spiced up the game with these extras.

Sunshine Coastline alone is better than all of Celceta.

I stand corrected.

This was a very fun demo. Thinking about picking this up now depending on reviews.

Quite a lot of longtime Ys fans were blown away by Ys 8 from what I can tell.

An extremely ambitious title that, frankly, has an even better (and self contained story) than even current Kiseki (aka Cold Steel 1 and 2). I know Gu4n was astonished that they got the original Ys 8 to even run on a Vita at certain points in the game.

Jumping is back, bosses are fun, game on higher difficulties is still hard as fuck. Perfect dodging and guarding isn't as broken as Ys Seven but it's still fun to use, et cetera.

I'm glad it was delayed because this game really shines thanks to the delay. It would have really hurt it if it stayed undercooked.

Downloaded this and Knack 2 demo, can't wait to try em out tonight. Getting the CE regardless of how I feel about the demo, but I am sure I will love it.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Seems alright. Combat is messy and chaotic and I was unable to figure out what most of the enemy weakness icons were referring to when locking-on(skills unavailable to my team in the demo?)

Plays well on PS4, nice and fluid. Didn't outright grab me like the older games(Oath, Origins, and Eternal) but I also haven't played nu-Ys stuff like Celcetta and 7.

Will likely snag, though I am compelled to play the earlier games first.

Hold down R1 and press any of the corresponding face buttons to do a skill, and switch using square to get to the enemy's weakness. Even if you don't know what weakness icons are what you can still use common sense to some degree.

All hard shelled crab like things take more damage from Sahad, for example, because he uses a crushing weapon. You get the idea.

The game will most likely click once you start doing that, and if you start using L1 right before you get hit to do a perfect dodge/R1 to do a perfect guard I think you'll realize the game's combat is less messy than you think.

I get the feeling a lot of people aren't going to realize how to play this game for a little while.

The weaknesses correspond to character attributes, which are applied to all of their attacks and skills. Adol is Slash, Laxia is Pierce, and Sahad is Smash.

Yep.

Slash is red, Pierce is Yellow and Smash is Green btw, to make it easier to comprehend and identify in game

Thanks, helps tremendously as I was assuming the weakness icons referred to individual skills, not attributes. I even spent time going through menus trying to see if there was any reference tucked away(like elements attached to current equipped skills) but now this makes sense.

Didn't realize there was perfect guard and dodge either. The control diagram came up on screen at the start and I was so not ready to memorize the 20 different commands. I had a brief few minutes to test afterall and wanted to just jump in. Definitely more intrigued to try again tonight now.

Didn't see anything wrong with the localisation so far tbh.

The dub is actually pretty entertaining in this demo. I like the dub, and the localization could be a TINY bit better, but honestly this is okay.

From what people doing reviews have said, like this one:

http://www.cubed3.com/review/4152/1/ys-viii-lacrimosa-of-dana-playstation-4.html

There are things that are easy to fix, apparently. Hell, maybe they'll get patched. In the end, though, it's definitely a good translation. Not intensely amazing, but good.

For, like, this part of the demo, you can chain things together like this:

and just keep rolling and doing perfect dodges and it feels amazing.

Made a GIF real quick:

Glad you can reconfigure the button layout in the demo, the default set up feels kind of wonky coming off of most other games lol.

The only Ys I have played is Origin on Vita (finished it recently), but I liked it a lot. Will try this for sure.

Yeah, this happened to me too. Ps4 controller seems to have the advantage of available layout here because of the central button.

Another Perfect Dodge GIF or two to get an idea of its usage, along with using a Skill:

Sweet. 60fps godness.

There will be an steam demo?

Apparently there's a beta you can sign for.
