Eurogamer: The difficulty slider in South Park: TFBH changes the color of your skin.

They play the "both sides" card pretty often, and it's definitely rubbed off on certain people

I'm pretty much done defending South Park as they don't need my help, and they've done a lot of shit that I find personally objectionable.. I will say that saying that "both sides" have foibles that can be mocked is very different than saying that "both sides" are equally bad. *Most* of the mockery of the left has been towards performative liberalism that doesn't really help anyone but the person's ego. They've gone way harder in their criticism of Trump, for instance, than anyone on the left.

South Park, however, is certainly not above criticism.

Having said that this feature is pretty hilarious.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
An absolutely subversive idea and the trans thing is great as well. I might have my issues with parts of South Park but this is a really good showing on them and could even lead to a more interesting game if they actually build off of this in game. That said I'm almost more excited to read reactions from small minded ass holes who can't handle this concept.

Prior to this announcement I was planning to pick the game up when it was around 20 bucks, because I enjoyed the original but figured I could wait for a must have price.

I'm gonna preorder this game tonight because of this feature.

I played as a trans girl in the original to the extent it was allowed. It's awesome that I can make it official in the sequel.

Yep, no easier way to frustrate leftists than to acknowledge the existence of institutional racism.

When stereotypes are defied, people are surprised and even frustrated. I know a few who equate voting republican with supporting racism on a personal level.

To be honest that's pretty much the truth tho.

We gotta be smarter to get farther. To make ourselves indispensable

It speaks to the caliber of who we put in office too

So can you also just decide to quit your life one day and try something else in case you fail? Can you watch walkthroughs on how to live a life to succeed?

This is actually pretty clever. I 100% understand if people are offended by this, but I think it's a great way to poke fun at society using the video game medium.

While I think this is pretty funny in a vacuum, I do hear the people saying that South Park as a whole seemed to revel in a certain type of offensiveness that probably influenced a part of a generation who latched on to all the wrong aspects of it.

Pretty much why I don't watch it anymore.

Actually kinda surprised at this turn considering Trey and Matt's politics

Why? They have evolved on these topics.

Compare nearly a decade and a half ago "Mr. garrisons fancy new vagina" having the message "you're not a woman, you're a man with a mutilated penis" with last years "The Cissy" having the message "your gender identity is valid".

They have questionable views, but definitely they have become more open about transgender people.

An artist can spoil their own work.

Yeah and as the creators they can do that if they please. Not too mention this is a pretty big deal for a lot of people and far more so than the single minor issue of being a spoiler.

What do you mean by "stereotypes are defied?" And voting choices/who you align yourself with politically should reflect on a personal level. Obviously voting Republican doesn't mean you're a white supremacist, but you're aligning your political opinions with institutionally racist policies, whether inadvertently or not.

Well, this actually just reinforces general right wing attitude towards social advancement and making it out there: to use gamer lingo, "git gud boy". Well yeah, POC might have it a bit harder, but chill dude, you just need to work hard and git gud, that's all. Unless the idea is that people with more right-wing views abhor the idea of even playing as a black character, which I think is just strawmanning every right winger into some extremist.

No it doesn't, because right-wingers think that either there is no institutional racism or that it adversely affects whites if anything because affirmative action, welfare, etc etc. Right-wingers absolutely bristle at the idea that minorities have it harder than them.

That's always been an extremely facile interpretation of their viewpoints. Well it may lead to some nihilistic cynicism in general that isn't really unique considering America has like single-digit approval of its legislative body.

There has been a lot of anger at anybody pointing out flaws in people like Hillary because apparently that gave us Trump, but the show really only lightly poked fun at her while they literally fucked Trump to death, so to think they're equivocating is really weak.

Reading this has actually made me a lot more confident that this game might be good! Was kinda iffy on the pre-release material they've shown before this but this is hilarious.

This is great. The harder the difficulty, the darker your skin. So game becomes harder and you feel weaker? It means world is more challenging than lighter colors?

Or

The darker the color, the more badass you are to play game at higher difficulty?

Which of these two points are devs trying to put across or is it both?

joshcryer

it's ok, you're all right now
I'm... well. Damn. These guys are geniuses. Want to watch that Doco of them making an episode again now. Of course they would come up with this. It's really good.

You should look at GAF from a decade ago and how they dealt with trans issues. Things have changed big time over that time. Society shift in general. Well in some parts of the world of course.

Combat difficulty's a different slider, this is apparently tied to how much $ you make from quests/battles/etc and how people treat you.

I feel like this is fully separated from conversation around the game at this point. All I'll say is that I doubt many people on the left will have an issue with this joke, unless they simply feel it's too serious an issue to be taken lightly in any context.

People who have beef with the show for their past few seasons probably won't have their minds changed because of this, but it won't make things worse.

This mechanic has the potential to make TFBH one of the most socially poignant games ever...As a black person I'm thinking of so many ways they could show the difficulty increase in game, a few already mentioned.

I would hope people who only play as characters that "look like themselves" are intrigued enough to go through the game on a higher difficulty.

Like someone else said, if only this was revealed some way at the end of the game. Please dont fuck this up Ubisoft/Matt&Trey

This is dope and it's gonna piss off edgy right wingers that think Matt and Trey are on their side. So it's a win/win

LOL, this. One of the first things you'll notice when observing alt-right cesspits is that they reference SP (wrongly, out-of-context, etc.) for tons of their hateful bullshit.

How will they explain this one?

I mean, it certainly applies to our most recent election at the very least.

If you voted for Donald Trump, you voted for someone who literally campaigned on racist policies.

"I'm not racist but I voted for one" is not exactly a valid argument.

The thing is, In the greater scheme of things, South Park has always been to the left, but they aren't afraid to criticise and mock things that are left winged, that doesn't magically turn them Right wing.

For example, just because they have made fun of atheists twice in the entire run of the show doesn't magically erase the fact that mocking every religion is their bread and butter.

Sure they have problematic views, like their stance on climate change (basically a soft denial, they oppose it but won't spell it straight up) or their mockery of Political correctness (which i feel they took it on the wrong direction) doesn't change the fact that they also have criticised things like Islamaphobia, homophobia, Conversion therapy, Cultural appropriation and similar things.

Count me in for the "now buying at full price" club. Was going to wait for a sale.

If you don't have Stick of Truth it's actually a great price cause it will include it.

I mean, the Giant Douche vs Turd Sandwich stuff was literally a platform they stood on mulitple times across multiple decades. It's the epitomy of "both sides are equally bad, so why bother?" And yes, it's satire, but it galvanized the apathy of today's youth in a way that I've never ever seen. I remember going out to dinner and overhearing college kids quoting pieces of those episodes verbatim in giving reasons why they weren't going to bother voting after Bernie was eliminated. So yeah, their stances on some shit are definitely out of whack and they allow a lot of bad shit to be played off because, "at the end of the day, they're just going to be shitty, so who cares?"

After their back down from the Trump stuff and the most recent season, I don't know if Trey and Matt have it in them to do this particular brand of satire and complete it in a way that is going to be completely tone deaf AT BEST. But then I remember how troubled the Stick of Truth development cycle was, and I remember how much I enjoyed that game, especially the writing. So I'm not going to write this off so easily.

I just hope they're bringing the heat because the last 12-18 months of South Park have not been good.

"We didn't get the joke. Then someone explained it to us. Now we're outraged."

It's social commentary... If you are born white, you have things easy compared to literally any other ethnicity.

"I'm not racist but I voted for one" is not exactly a valid argument.

You're making a case here that everyone who voted for Donald Trump did so because they agreed with him 100%, which is blatantly false.

Fun to watch the mental gymnastics of people convinced that Matt & Trey are somehow "alt-right" or whatever

Yes, just because they do offensive/edge-y humor and their political views don't line up with liberals that apparently makes them "alt-right" somehow. It's annoying. I would consider myself pretty liberal and I've loved South Park basically since the beginning. Just because it's creators views don't 100% align with mine doesn't mean I need to hate the show or that the show is evil or anything. Also, even libertarians are capable of having progressive views, just FYI.

If you are white, you are playing easy mode.
If you are black, you are playing hard mode.

It's social commentary that they're going to have to WORK for because that can go sideways REAL fast.

You're making a case here that everyone who voted for Donald Trump did so because they agreed with him 100%, which is blatantly false.

I mean....at best, the best argument you can make for a Trump supporter is, "I voted for this because fiscally, this might keep my situation where it is, or improve it, and I literally don't care what happens to anyone else but me for that to happen."

Because that was his promise. And here we are.
