Just to ask/confirm. I have frozen all 3 credit's, but can existing credit companies like my chase card still run it if I want an increase? Or would I have to un-freeze it and request it?

Based off what I'm read it does appear your current creditors can run your credit, it's new ones that can't with a freeze.

I love the Equifax slogan: Powering the World with Knowledge(TM)

Indeed.

Gotta get that changed I imagine.

I only checked my SSN on the equifax site, but didn't sign up for their "complimentary service." Am I already dead in the law suit?

Yep. Even if it's just 90 days it's a good thing to have at least for now..sigh what a mess this is

I'm traveling out of country for vacation next week. I've already informed my CC company of the dates and where I'll be. If I setup a Fraud alert, do you think there is a chance my card will get blocked?

Well, was able to freeze credit two out of the three places. Not sure if I'll be able to freeze the third since I don't think I have the available paperwork. Still a bit worried about this since I have zero experience with credit at all, but I think that's a good thing right now since I don't have to worry about applying for anything important anytime soon. After that was taken care of, I did the free annual credit check, and I was able to see the freezes in place. I was also able to see all my wonderful student loan information, which was interesting I guess. I know the whole situation is awful, but it's probably a good thing I start getting into learning how all this credit nonsense works. Just have to hope for the best for now.

I'd like to thank everyone who's been helping out and posting info in this thread, I appreciate it.

Can someone give me a TLDR on what's going on? I know about the breach but everyone's now talking about lawsuits and being voided from them so I'm lost lol

Leaked data includes names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, addresses and some driver's license numbers

Jesus Christ almighty. This is far, far worse than when encrypted passwords and e-mail addresses get breached.

Ive been seeing conflicting reports on putting fraud alerts. I did one on Transunion and read somewhere that issuing a alert on one will initiate the alert on the other 2. Should I go ahead and put a alert on the other 2?

I'm 21 years old and my credit history is just student loans and like 3 credit cards

>Equifax finds out about data leak
>Few days later some of their execs sell shares
>Weeks later they alert the public
>Put up a site about the leak, have a form where you fill in your last name and most of your SSN to "enroll" in credit monitoring, turns out you can use that form to find out if your data was leaked or not
>People do some digging and find that the site is set up haphazardly, contains debug code, login info was easily accessible, being hosted on Wordpress and is otherwise lacking in security
>Usage agreement for site says if you use it you give up the right to a class action lawsuit (and there will be one for this data breach, give it time)
>NY AG goes "ah hell naw" and Equifax changes it to "you can opt out of that clause if you send us a letter within 30 days"
>Later say "oh sorry this data breach is excluded from this clause thought that was apparent" (well not like that, but they implied that this data breach was always excluded from that clause, which is a lie given that after people started to complain they only then changed it, and then now seem to have decided the PR hit wasn't worth it)

TL;DR fuck equifax. they had one job and they fucked it up, and they mishandled everything about it afterwards and even now.

Thank you for the summary! What a bunch of scumbags. Did the site ever get updated to be more secure? If not I'll just wait and monitor my bank account and run a credit check in a few days.

Just a heads up if it hasn't been mentioned. 90 day fraud alert is free and if you do it with one of the big three, it gets processed to all of them where they'll call you if you (or anyone else) applies for a credit card, loan etc. Its the route I decided to go when my credit reports came back without anything negative.

So I just need to sign up via TransUnion for example and the fraud alert goes to all of the major bureaus? I've heard fraud alerts aren't always 100%, as many times creditors will ignore them. Is that the case or was I being misled?

Setting up freezes on two adults for a single household seems like a gigantic pain in the ass and I would rather avoid it if at all possible.

Looks like my wife and I may be impacted. Signed us both up doe the 90 day Experian alert and need to check back with Equifax next week or something.

I've never applied for a credit card, is there anyway this could affect me?
Yes. They collect data on whoever they can. I would assume I'm affected until someone can confirm you arent.

Im really suprised this hasnt gotten more attention. This is really as bad as it gets.

Great. I destroyed my credit in my mid 20s and it took around 7 years to rebuild my credit score back up to 800. Some real bullshit that I need to worry about this now.

Thank You
Based on the information provided, we believe that your personal information may have been impacted by this incident.

I accidentally hit enroll, but I think you need to fully complete enrollment after the date provided. My wife sent me this Reddit post with some nice info in one place. I'm going to place an initial 90 day fraud alert later today.

So if you don't complete the registration on the given date then you're not officially enrolled in their program? Does that mean you didn't give up your rights to sue?

Chumly

So are we supposed to check on their website or not? I don't trust these pieces of shit. I've gotten 2 credit cards in the last two years so I'm pretty much just assuming they gave my info away

I don't get what this will do. It's not like millions of fradulent lines of credit are going up over night.

Whoever stole the data will sell it on black markets and years from now people will use it to do whatever. This problem is going to go for a lot longer than 90 days.

You should freeze if you notice unusual activity or new accounts opened. Otherwise there's really no point.

Yeah, I recently did an increase on my PNC Visa and they didn't check shit according to the credit report I pulled last night. So definitely YMMV.

So I've used Credit Karma in the past and I've received an email from them saying they already provide fraud alerts for me through their services. I'm probably going to activate it via the others anyway, but I wanted to make sure they were legit about it.

The Equifax website was updated yesterday.

A Progress Update for Consumers

September 8, 2017

We understand that some consumers are experiencing difficulties getting the answers and support they need through our website and call center. Ramping up the website and call center to handle the anticipated volume is ongoing and we are focused on making improvements as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this process has created.

Thus far today, we’ve made the following adjustments:

1). YOU CAN DETERMINE YOUR STATUS IMMEDIATELY
Some consumers who visited the website soon after its launch failed to receive confirmation clarifying whether or not they were potentially impacted. That issue is now resolved, and we encourage those consumers to revisit the site to receive a response that clarifies their status.

2). NO WAIVER OF RIGHTS FOR THIS CYBER SECURITY INCIDENT
In response to consumer inquiries, we have made it clear that the arbitration clause and class action waiver included in the Equifax and TrustedID Premier terms of use does not apply to this cybersecurity incident.

3). EXPANDED OUR CALL CENTER
We have tripled our call center team to over 2000 agents and continue to add agents.

Our goal is to make this process as convenient and consistent as possible. We will continue to identify steps to improve this process.

And we will continue as well to listen to your comments and suggestions.

How do you set that up?

How do you set that up?

This is from the Reddit post.

If you do nothing else, place an initial 90 day fraud alert on your file. This is free and will require lenders to contact you if someone (including yourself) tries to apply for credit. Government info . You only have to do this with one bureau in order for the alert to be placed on all three, and it should take less than 5 minutes:
Equifax OR 1-888-766-0008
Experian OR 1-888-397-3742
Transunion OR 1-800-680-7289

this site throws an invalid ssl certificate error..

Yeahhhhh that's sketchy as fuck.

I did the thing yesterday and set up a fraud alert at TransUnion and Experian (Equifax, funnily enough, wasn't working!). Hopefully that's enough.

Not like I have credit worth stealing anyway.

Shame they are doing sweet FA on the UK side.
From Sky News, they suggest that BT, British Gas, and Capital One customers could be affected (and probably more).

If only GDPR had been in force... Oh man.

God fucking dammit. Well, I took the steps suggested in that Reddit post, so we'll see what happens. :/
