Me: "Why haven't you people fired Nomura yet?"
Him: *laughs* - "...He promised Kingdom Hearts 3 is coming out next year!"

I know it's not Versus but you should've put that triggered event from FFXV where Noctis squeezes through a cave with Cloud squeezing through a demolished area

Oh man, missed opportunity. I'll make a DLC release of the gif with that update. Please look forward to it.

lmao i hate you

if there is any solace to this it's the discovery that the team behind ff14 and 12 are potentially working on ff16 right now. this has me infinitely more excited than both kh3 and ff7r combined

Been dying for this combat system to see the light of day ever since it was revealed all those years ago. Dazzle me, Nomura!

Combat is not going to be the same though. But am keen to learn how the new systems for 7r work. Nomura said he wants to reveal combat details in his next showing
in 2025

"With previous systems we've always had a great problem in trying to create a seamless environments. Field space has always been limited and loading often interrupts the flow of play. In this game our aim is to eliminate all obvious loading and to create an unlimited field. I want somebody to be able to shoot at you from within a house and for battles to move from outside to inside fluidly." - Nomura

This is just how they find the leaker, they tell every employee a plausible release year, from 2018 to 20XX.

Going off of the gameplay trailer for VII:R and what was shown of Versus, the combat is going to be extremely similar. They both were KH-like at their core, had on-the-fly character switching, command menu-based combat, etc. The gameplay trailer even got some cries of "Versus lives!" here on GAF, though of course you're right that the two combat systems won't be EXACTLY the same.

I mean, one will actually get finished mirite
god please

Also didn't realize Nomura said combat details were next up, that's always my favorite stuff! 2025 can't come soon enough.

Versus's system was planned to be more free and more similar to KH (double jump, warp strikes, etc). FF7's on the other hand looks more reserved (tied to ATB somehow, and probably no double jump degree of movement). I'll be able to explain better once we know more, but even at this early stage, they look different enough.

Hope everything is not as sepia-toned. I remember how Versus XIII took a lot from the look of cinema at the time(the 00s), lots of focus on particular color grading (everything's tinted blue, green or yellow) as well as focusing on washed out colors.

The only parts I really remember that were not abiding by that style was the scene when Noctis and Stella summon their weapons and sigils.

Hope the rest of the world is more colorful. I know Midgar's supposed be dirty and gloomy, but even in the original, it was a pretty damn colorful place:

Agree to disagree, the similarities are significant in my opinion. I'm pretty sure the ATB element is just for the special attacks seen in the trailer, though it's gotten a facelift since, and there was nothing suggesting any sort of restricted attack or magic usage. Considering Nomura even stressed that the game was action-based earlier this year and that all the footage revealed so far looks very KH/Versus, I'd expect it to lean pretty heavily towards that combat style. Even if it's slower-paced than KH, which I think is reasonably likely, it's bringing to the table the most important things from its systems.

It's not the same combat system though.

See above, it's pretty darn close in my opinion.

Most of the time when games get delayed, I see it as a good thing.

With Square Enix though, you know they can put in 5 years of development and still churn out a turd. I have no hope for this game.

Yeah, I know the game is action based and I do see your perspective as well. If one sees the systems broadly, both have command menus, both have free (unlimited) basic attacks, both have free movement, it does seem similar. However the main system that drives FF7r, i.e., ATB based action, is what is not similar to Versus (KH). The pace of the combat might feel more like Lightning Returns. The pace of the combat is a very important part of something feeling completely different. Since both are action games, I'm just giving more weightage to the systems for differentiation.

But anyway, it's better if we revisit this once we know more about FF7r.

Sounds like possibly a case of both of us being correct, and I see your perspective as well, so I'll just look forward to talking more once we know more as you suggest. I hope to see some gameplay trailer breakdowns from you like back in the day concerning Versus/XV, those were easily my favorite threads!

Haha, yeah I'll be sure to do them
if I'm still alive by then.

Time is a flat circle.

Earlier this year I was trolled with a supposed interview of Nomura saying how VIIR hadn't yet entered full production, made a thread about it. It was actually an old Versus interview. :|

A few months pass and we get this thread about how this game still hadn't entered full production lol.

Imagine the visuals, polish, music, and animation of XIII but with different writers, directors, and level designers.
What do you mean "music"?
The music is already there. Which would be a good thing in this case.

I see you're point though. The people in charge of the project give me hope. Specifically Nomura amd Kitase.

Peopl still keep falling for the PSX 'gameplay' trailer.

Guys, this is unhealthy. Has the FFXV reveal at E3 taught you nothing. The combat in that trailer won't make it to the final game. One of the obvious red flag was the guard scorpion battle screenshots where Nomura said they had recorded footage yet half year has passed and 3 major events and no sight of it.

First game of this project should at least be good. It's going to be difficult for them to mess it up since Midgar will force a structured approach. Even if they head to open world later in the game, there'll be some balance there due to the early portion. The games after that are where the problems come in. I feel like they're going to shoot themselves in the foot by trying to create an actual world, and lose the strong sense of structure and progression this story needs. If they're smart, they'll be looking at an zoned approach. Create some big zones where necessary, and try to strike a balance of structure and freedom.

Having said that, they seem to be taking the piss here. It took FFXV three years with the reboot according to Tabata, right? It's been three years already with this game since it apparently started in 2014, and it looks like it won't be releasing until 2019.

They better have something substantial to show for all of that time.

Long may Nomura reign in the chaos of our hearts. The one, true, and only visionary at SE.

If they're pulling development in-house for quality and scheduling reasons, they presumably were unhappy with the current quality and development schedule.

Most likely this. Also, FF7 is one of these games they want to get it right. They know the important thing is not to get the game out of the door, but to actually be good. They have the cash to bank that.

Everything I hear about this remake has me thinking it's just not going to turn out well.

I really wish S-E didn't decide to go the realistic route for VII's remake. I think the game could have been gorgeous with a cell shaded art style to match it's goofy anime cast. To me the moment they chose realism as the style was when I knew this remake was going to be a mess. This might be completely wrong but I fully believe the development wouldn't be as messy if they weren't using the awful advent children style.

At this point, can Square go back to making 16-bit and 32-bit style JRPGs? I'd gladly take a FFXVI in either of those styles if it meant that it'd be out a lot sooner, and arguably more enjoyable than FFXV. It's clear that HD development isn't working out well for them.

You should defently play octopath on the switch, I guarantee you will like it.

Nomura's talent worked the best under Sakaguchi. He is like an untamed wild beast right now who has the potential under the right producer but given free reign, he absolutely wrecks every project under him.

If it wasn't during Sakaguchi era, Nomura would have never delivered the original Kingdom Hearts on time. After he left, the sequel was delayed by almost an entire year and then it took 13 years for part 3. Like seriously.

you can't expect them to do things that others do with less people and less time accomplish

It’s Nomura.

Square have already shipped DQ11 which is beautiful, and CC2 have shipped a ton of games this gen.

Everything nomura has touched that has a resolution higher than 640x480 goes straight into development hell

Well it's hard for me to tell what the heck is even going on with the battle system but I guess we'll see.

It's so depressing. It seems like almost nothing can go well. Hopefully the game itself is decent when it does release. I hope i don't have to buy a ps5 for it.
