Forza Motorsport 7 - Review thread

The demo wasn't terribly exciting to me, but, I absolutely loved FM6, so, I'm glad to see positive scores so far.

Waiting on that VVV review, though.

"After reviewing Forza 6 and experiencing a deep, nagging feeling that the game simply wasn’t very enjoyable, Forza Motorsport 7 is a very welcome surprise. If ever there was suspicion that Turn 10 Studios would focus on making the best-looking showcase for Xbox One X at the expense of making a truly great racing game (and fixing the problems of its predecessor), then we feel bad for entertaining that idea. " - GamesRadar

That was my exact feeling when I played Forza Motorsport 6 so I am happy to hear an impression like this.

Yeah I'm looking forward to that. Also looking forward to seeing what Karak, Inside Sim Racing and Luke Reilly at IGN
(only reviewer I can trust at IGN)
think.

God fucking damnnit.

Dammit indeed. I really hope they get things ironed out quickly. I dropped Horizon(different dev I know) due to similar issues I experienced in the demo. Granted now Horizon runs pretty great all around but it took some time to get there and I was hopeful this games release would incorporate whatever magic was used there.

Holy shit, the usual suspects getting so angry because of the scores are this worried already? Going to be a bloodbath when the big name reviews come out and when Forza 7 inevitably wins racing GOTY everywhere.

Tbf, this recent sentiment that Forza is not a sim is yes, recent.....I think that came up in the demo thread only because more PC folk are now playing Forza...I have always been saying that it's leaning more towards arcade games than sim, and there was always something wonky about forza physics, even on the Original XB....Cars never really felt that they were weighty then, and not much has changed now....I think now that the recent entries gives so many assists as default, rewind, obtrusive racing lines... and it seems that the environments and cars don't look as real and authentic as other racers really adds to it...Notwithstanding, a lack of ATD, like the missing pit crew etc...I just think Forza is targeting a different demographic here, than pure sim-racing.

You admitted to never owning an Xbox multiple times on the past, but this commment proves youve never touched a Forza game in your life. Jesus, your post history. /cringe

How are you still a member here...?

Edit: beaten badly lol. Seems I'm not the only one to notice.

Yeah, my problem with a lot of outlets is just that many critics aren't real into racing games, so, they sometimes tend to pawn the game off to whoever's willing to review it.

Which doesn't mean their opinion is invalid, just, that's not the impression I'm really looking for.

Loved the demo, in particular the new dash cam and added atmosphere from the subtle camera shake and moving parts.

So glad it looks like the game has also improved. I drove with all assists off and it felt demanding enough to take skill without becoming annoying.

Keen to hold off until my Xbox X arrives.

Jalopnik’s review sounds great as well.

I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t catch Forza Motorsport 7’s simulated driver. He threw his Porsche 918 Spyder around the corners so well, his lines so perfect, that I just could not close the gap between us. But then, it started to rain.

Fat drops of it landed on my windshield as the tiny storm evolved into a downpour. The drenched track shimmered with puddles. Up ahead, the Porsche’s tires squiggled in the wet and, little by little, I started gaining on it.

Turns out I’m good in the rain, at least here. Weather in the game is like it is in real life; unpredictable, natural and very palpable. It’s the difference between a win and a second place finish for those who know what they’re doing behind the wheel.

And that’s one of a million little details that make the latest Forza game such a standout.

We've got a few videos from the PC version up (only got our review code yesterday) if you want :)
http://www.gamersyde.com/news_forza_7_final_pc_build_videos-19547_en.html

So something we noticed in another thread: On my setup on max settings, the water spray has proper edge filtering, so you don't get an obvious cutoff against the back of the car and the road surface, and the tread aqua-trail looked as expected.

At least one other person though was getting that sort of "banding" look where the alpha effect overlapped, and an oddly opaque tread aqua-trail. Your footage on the Nurb seems to have those issues as well. Any chance you have insight on this? I haven't been able to re-create the problem on my setup, but it's obviously wider-reaching than just one or two people.

I can’t wait to set my Lap Length on each Career Race to 5 or 10 and have longer races than 5-10 minutes like they usually are.

I'm not a big racing fan (last one I played was NFS underground), but I'll be picking this up to showcase my XBX. Glad to hear the reviews are positive, perhaps I'll end up really enjoying it.

Just ordered a 32" curved monitor for my racing seat setup.

Getting more excited, LOL.

Now I need a stand to mount at the right level in front of my seat/wheel.

I'll be using my wheel setup with my PC rather than my Xbox One (giving to my girls) and Xbox One X (will be in entertainment center downstairs). Shame my wheel setup doesn't work with my PS4 as is :(. I'll be able to play Horizon 3, PCars, and Forza 7 on my single setup though. May have to buy another darn wheel to play GT:S on my setup.

This really applies to all simulations (or games that claim to be simulations) whether it's racing or flying or soccer. They're not games in quite the same way and can't usefully be reviewed like them by people who have no knowledge (or limited knowledge) of what is being simulated. The ratings and the aggregates tend to have no bearing on reality when it comes to these games.

so they should not put motorsport in the name if it is not a motorsport?

You really like to dig in on the wierdest things. I never said that. Call it what you want, doesnt matter to me. Many people who favor a heavy sim side do not like the fact that it is called Motorsport when it doesnt actully focus on the sport of racing and is more car porn and sim-ish (for a console). I think it has a decent niche and I enjoy my time with it.

None of the reviews (at least the ones that are out now) even touch on the physics of the cars, I think that tells you everything you need to know.

To be fair most people aren't going to care, unless it's a sim racing outlet or the vehicle physics are particularly noteworthy.

I will probably get this eventually on the One X, but I'm in no rush. The challenge and allure of driving modern sports cars just kind of falls apart for me when the game doesn't simulate their fancy driving dynamics and suspension setups. I'm sure it's a good game though, Turn 10 has this whole Forza Motorsport thing down to a science.

Super pumped for this game. Hope that it does well in reviews. My MC guess would be 90. Was there an embargo that's up? Doesn't seem like many reviews in just yet.

Doesn't seem like many reviews in just yet.

I'd guess reviewers are in a potentially awkward position with the three big racing games releasing so closely, so they're withholding hard declarations until they get a sense of the scene, and how the online features play out in the real world.

If I ever wondered why drivatars are so bad. Do any of these reviewers know what an apex is?

This is what I always think of when I see people complain about how bad the drivatars are. They are in fact mimicking what their real life counterparts 'drive' like.

So my kid is finally getting old enough to play sorta well. I already preordered the digital version on my main account for play anywhere. We have a couple gaming PCs and an Xbox one.

What do I need in order to play with him? Would we need a disk copy (or copy of the game on his account) also? Would he need Xbox Live on his account (not happening)?

His PC is currently logged into my Win10 store account since family sharing sucks. That's how he plays single player play anywhere.

Has there been any definitive answer as to if Nascar is playable immediately or some kind of DLC?

They showed Nascar racing on the live stream yesterday in free play so it quite likely there's a Nascar event during one of the championship series. They're available to buy as long as you have the credits or the right collector level

Ever heard of Assetto Corsa? The sim community consider it a good sim.

An important consideration for a sim is and will always be performance. Outside of playing on a PS4 Pro in boost mode, AC doesn't perform well on consoles. It's why it's not as prominent as it is in the PC scene, in spite of a solid sim framework.

Being quite the casual fan of sims (but loving open worlds like NFS Rivals and FH2), is there a real reason for me to get this over FM6?

I guess it'll look prettier on XBOX, but I'm not getting one.

If they are going to slap “Motorsport” on the title, at some point can we at least get some damn qualifying, flag rules, and damn championships with points. Physics aside, which are already weird on a wheel, these are some pretty basic things to include in a racing game of this genre.

£44 for the ultimate edition.

Buy some MS points in Rubles (3,500) Google translate the hell out of the page (unless you speak Russian), enter codes and buy.

I'll take that. :D

I was going to skip Forza and maybe wait until the 1x but too much of a bargain to resist....

More tracks than FM6. More weather options. More interesting single player campaign. Homologation in races. New dash cam.

Yep, and on console where I prefer to play it offers rather poor performance which impairs my enjoyment of it compared to FM. If I wanted to mess around on PC with it I'd just do Iracing anyway.

As someone who liked (but didn't love) FM6, reading some of the impressions/reviews of how 7 compares sounds great. Loved the demo too and it ran beautifully on my PC. Can't wait to start playing!

So go play that then?
