Star Wars Battlefront II |BETA| Execute Pre-Order 66

Maybe there's a glimmer of hope then. I only got to spend a couple of hours with it yesterday so I'm hoping by sticking with a class and scrapping (that's possible, right?) I may be able to customize the classes to my liking.
I can't get on and check and I don't know if there is a 'scrapping mechanic' but it would be good if there was.

I noticed that on Xbox One as well, didn't remember any issues like that with the first game. Hoping I'm not gonna feel like I "need" an Xbox One X or a PS4 Pro for this game to run smoothly. I'll probably just hold off on playing it if that's the case.

That's exactly what it will feel like for me if the performance stays the same in the final version... Which in turn will make me not as interested, as well.

I noticed the loot crates you unlock from leveling up and completing challenges seem to be giving 3 items almost every time. I've yet to purchase any crates with the credits I've earned from playing but in the Alpha it ranged from 3-5 (4?) items per crate depending on which crate tier you got. And I feel like every crate always gave you some amount of scrap, and that's what's missing from all these crates I've earned so far. I don't know if the crates you purchase with in game credits rectifies this, but in the Alpha you racked up scrap quick enough to regularly craft and upgrade star cards. This needs to be addressed in the final game.

You cannot scrap items for crafting parts. Not in the beta at least and I doubt it will be any different in the full game. Right now there are definitely only 2 ways of unlocking anything, you either get it in a crate, or you use crafting parts you got from crates to unlock them.

Post play impressions from PS4 and PC:

Generally I actually prefer playing with a controller. The more arcadey style of this game just makes a better fit with one, compared to Battlefield. If I pick this up on the PC I'll have to really play around with the key bindings to get something comfortable. Without having a selection of weapons to scroll through via the mouse, and instead using power ups, it becomes a lot more key intensive.

Third person seems to be the far superior perspective to play in. I kept trying with 1st person, and will switch to it on occasion, but the wider viewing angle, peeking around corners without exposing yourself fully, etc. Part of this might be fixed with an FOV slider for first person.

Space combat is so much better this time around. It took me a few goes to get to grips with it, but I feel much more in control of the aircraft, the responsiveness has vastly improved, I can manually roll my spacecraft, and aiming is easier for me.

Visuals? On both accounts they're okay. PS4 obviously suffers from having much weaker hardware, but even the PC has dissapointing amounts of pop-in, which I presume will be corrected for the final release. On the PC in particular, it would be nice to turn off some of the visual clutter (Naboo must be infested with pidgeons and doves, and they really need some road sweepers to sort the leaves out). Overall this bit is somewhat harder to judge, as I don't know how old this build is, and how much both versions will improve between this and the final build (and even how many more settings we will receive).

Gameplay: there's a definite push by DICE to make this a deeper game than the first: proper class systems which broadly do feel different and not overlapping, inclusion of power-ups and heroes via battle points rather than floating orbs, the gun play feels better, with the weapons seeming less 'samey' than previously. In fact it felt more intuitive as to how and when to use powerups too. I felt like in Galactic conquest I knew more of what I was actually meant to be doing. There's a better feel of being rewarded for participating as well as PTFO. The Naboo map has actually had a lot of close battles within the throne room too, and raely has it felt like a walk in the park for either side.

With the maps, vehicles, heroes, and modes we know that are coming, and free DLC for all, I've not got the same concerns as Battlefront (2015) (and I'm saying this as someone who bought the complete edition for £20, I still felt it was light on depth and content). Overall it currently feels like a big step up, and retains that feeling of my nostalgia for Star Wars, and I certainly keep firing the beta up to play more of it.

However, a lot of the improvements do feel half baked. I don't know whether this is because they want the game to reach a slightly more casual market, or a lack of consideration as to the impact of complexity to the longevity of the game. For instance I get dumped into a squad solely for the point of spawning, get told to stick with them for extra points. But there aren't any major incentives to even consider it when I'm playing:

Currently I can't, or haven't seen how to:
See who I'm squadded up with
Choose/create a squad
Have a squad leader
Spawn in on a squad member to limit walking time and keep up tempo on the enemy
Offer ammo (or in this case cool downs)
Offer healing/revives
Pilot/repair spacecraft together (the Clone ship on rails on Naboo, why can't three of us rip things up inside it?)
Get leadership rewards for directing my squad
Spot enemies for squadmates, only my team via binocs etc.

It's baffling that a more rigid squad system isn't in the game, given that DICE literally has the framework to take and adapt in Battlefield.

I kind of wish every trooper had sidearms to jump to when their gun overheats, but I suppose its about keeping an eye on that bar, and also it would mess with perks.

Whilst when I started on the Beta it felt like I was getting shot from all sides and dying constantly, those concerns have gone as I've learned the maps and the flow of gameplay. The TTK is arguably a little too short, and the visual clutter doesn't help picking out, but I think there's also two other reasons why this feeling exists. One is that the Naboo map is essentially a long wide corridor, so it can be quite easy to find yourself going from a quiet spot to the middle of the action in seconds without quite realising it. Secondly, compared to say Battlefield One, the sound design is different with the weapons. There I'm very careful about given my position away either via sound or muzzle flash, but in the beta, they're less apparent, and less likely to send a load of players hunting you down in the same fashion. Thus it can be harder to tell where you've been shot from initially, but also you as the player are more likely to take some sneaky but risky shots when flanking an enemy, as it's less likely to have dire consequences compared to Battlefield One.

It's an empty criticism. "Make this game exactly like your other franchise just with different art" isn't something I acknowledge as being a worthwhile discussion. You want Battlefield? Go play Battlefield.

I want Star Wars Battlefield. What do I go play now?

Fuck the battlefield sniper shelves, mortar spam, vehicle camping and every other bullshit mechanic of battlefield.

Edit: also bringing bf gun mechanics over? Heck that too! suppression and random spray all over the place because someone sneezed your way.

Still better than the garbage DICE came up with for Battlefront 2. This is one of the worst feeling shooters I have ever played by DICE. Its worse than Battlefield 1, Battlefield 4, and Battlefront (EA).

Also, because you are bad a BF games doesn't make BF1 combat suck. Its pretty good IMO. The whining over bullet deviation is just that, whining.

Played a bunch of the beta last night. Really enjoy it and the gameplay feels way better than the first game. But I'm slightly worried that I might fall into the same issue I had with the last game where it becomes really repetitive and I just drop the game completely after a bit.

Much of that is down to DICE making sure Content and updates comes quickly and that the loot stuff feeds players a steady supply of interesting bits that help players make unique and interesting builds for classes.

Battlefront 1 had mostly the headless chicken class and I never really clicked with it because it was another deathmatch shooter. At least BF2 seems to address that issue i had with the first game and bring back classes and objective play. Still, looking forward to some larger maps. Also interested to see what they do with Strikes.

Sounds like a problem for you since that game doesn't exist and no one is making it.

lol, well at least the lowest common denominator is happy right? I am glad you got the p2w microtransaction, low content, casualfield you wanted. When the servers are drying up in a couple months I better not see you cry about how the game has no depth like the first one!

Well damn. I guess once I unlock the majority of useful items at least at that point I won't care.

I still don't get it.

If this is anything like the first the servers are going to be just fine for 2 years... (unless you are on PC)

Do you always get this mad when games aren't specifically made for you?

I do wonder if they will bring the Jabba stuff back as well. Currently you have challenges to do as you play and I think they might be credits only but I have not delved into them that heavily.

I get the feeling when you have one class like you want it, you start working on the next one. They are sure to dripfeed new stuff to keep people hungry haha.

Yeah, at least with the system Battlefront 1 introduced (I think in one of the expansions) you could buy into missions where you performed specific kills or wins in specific modes where you could pick and choose what upgrades you wanted.

Jesus christ. Maybe it's time to take a break for a couple hours.

"Low content", really? Sorry people like a game that you don't, no need to throw a temper tantrum.

I would be OK with them coming back as long as they are not hidden behind stupid requirements that become almost impossible to get when nobody plays a particular mode.

A balance of direct choice and some rng is probably what they are aiming for.

Servers drying up in a couple of months? I assume you mean on PC, since on consoles the last game came out 2 years ago and you can still find a match quickly in virtually every mode.

Mechanics like this can actually encourage people to play modes/loadouts they usually don't.

Yeah, I think that works well but when they split up the playerbase via dlc, it made it super hard when the majority got what they wanted months ago. Hopefully now the dlc is free, the above won't be an issue if they bring it back.

“Stop liking what I don’t like!”

If you hate the game so much, alright, don’t worry, you don’t need to play it or engage with those of us who are. Hope you find something to enjoy elsewhere.

Some strange stuff happening here. I equipped the CR-2 assault weapon in the main menu, however ingame it always reverts me to the E-5. CR-2 still has the tick mark but it's greyed out.

Bug or what?

Not sure your point, but those numbers are more than enough to populate modes pretty quickly. It's a lot higher than Titanfall 2, which is a lot more recent, has had lately.

Is anyone who played this game for 2 years complaining? I never see it.

Weird. Sounds like a bug.

Anyone else wish/hope they port a Battlefield 1 trench style map to BF2? I would love to see an actual gritty warz one with happy little Droids running around it haha.

Do we have any indication that character customization is coming back? I want to pop new heads on my Droid.
Datamining shows a bunch of alien heads for the Rebels and Resistance.

What's your point? For 11 am on a weekday with a beta out for the sequel, those are decent numbers.

Was only able to get in a single Fighter Squadron match before work, and I couldn't hit shit. I was pretty decent at this mode in the previous game, but the new version did not feel adequately tuned to compensate for the removal of lock-on. Clearly practice will help, but it was jarring going from competent to worthless.

PS4 version, fwiw.

Having roll on the left stick made me smash into metal object S way too often. It certainly takes some adjustment to. Feels much better when you get it and I have the feeling good pilots will be godlike once they master it.

There is a squad system but it is weird that Dice never mentioned how to use it. I found out by browsing that you have to create it through the party on the PS4. You go to play together in the party and then create new game session as host and it will send invites to everyone in your party and walla.

Not to mention that game has a split player base thanks to its DLC model. The season pass goes dirt cheap every now and then but too many players got turned off to it and express no desire to go back to it. This game won't have that issue, I expect it will easily retain many more players.

I was wondering about this. So if you party up before a match, do you spawn with your squad/party mates?

Started playing the beta last night and I was completely lost. It started to get more enjoyable as I unlocked a few things, but I still have no idea what the hell I am doing, or at the very least, I am not using the classes as well as can be.

Is there a good "Battlefront 2 for Dummies" guide? Lol.

Are the Southpaw controls for Starfighters borked?

Just want to swap the left and right sticks but it doesn't seem to map correctly. It was fine in Battlefront I.
