SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

wait so since you put retroarch on the mini does that mean you could play nes, snes and even gba games on the system ?

also can you assign borders to a specific game or is it universal?

been eyeing a mini for so long but not willing to drop over $100 on it

Yep. Playing Wario Ware inc. on my mini right now

And what do you mean with your post?

Why don't you need it?

You don't need to install it (web installer). It just complicates things and leaves registry entries on your computer when you uninstall it.. You can download the zip from the same page and drop the program anywhere you want. And when you don't want it anymore, you just delete the folder.

You see all those people asking where their Kernel dump is? They were probably using the web installer.

Version 2.21b is now out

  • Better games compatibility for SNES Mini (updated database of preset IDs, better LoROM/HiROM detection).
  • Built in database of problem games, so hakchi2 will ask you to switch to 3rd party emulator automatically (e.g. RetroArch).
  • Original games are not using extra memory space anymore, so we have some extra space for additional games (thanks to DanTheMan827!)
  • "remove_thumbnails" mod no longer slows down SNES Mini's startup (thanks to brian91292!)
  • Bundled with new mod "snes_custom_filters" which allows to disable scanlines in CRT mode or enable bilinear filter in 4:3 mode. Please read mod description before install.
  • Bundled with new mod "extra_space". This is experimental mod for SNES Mini which moves your save-states data to unused partition of NAND flash. This partition is only 50MB in size but it will free some space for games because SNES Mini's save-states are huge. Please read mod description before install.

Just open the zip and drop the files in your existing folder to update. You won't need to uninstall and reflash your SNES Mini this time, nothing major affected the kernel. Simply resync your games.

Ha it changed the language of Hakchi to what I think is Ukranian.

Edit: Oh. Russian. I changed it back to EN in the config ini file.

I did the update and all my added games in my list are gone?

Edit: I synced and all my games are gone and all the boxarts for the original games are broken...

Hey guys. I've been checking this thread on and off for a few days. Has a post already been created that collects all the box arts posted throughout the thread? And if not, is anyone planning on doing that? For all I know, maybe that already exists on reddit and I just haven't seen it.

So I finished a collection of icon-based cover art for various games, all in more of a "Switch menu" full size style utilizing original artwork, varying box art, and more. Examples:

H8Sq3t4.png

rYz1gWJ.png
tH6n3Zk.png

2Cjl710.png

And examples in-menu:

Dimensions for each are 228x204 with a 2px black border. I didn't create one for every single title or anything, but I don't mind creating more for certain ones if anyone has requests.

Here is the full Imgur album with all the ones I've created so far. I'll update it over time in waves, I'm sure.

I love the idea behind these and how they look! I have no nostalgia for the 90's aesthetic in the boxes and the designer in me hates the wasted space on the screen. I have been making my own icons following your pattern. I have been searching for clean Goemon art to no avail.

Doing a lot of needless photoshopping to get the amount of negative space and layering I want in these. Thanks for the idea! I am excited to upload them all once I finish.

Apologies if I've missed this, but is there a way to have the borders show with games running through Retroarch? Even just the default borders?

Yes, but not the borders from Canoe - here's how I did it.

1. FTP into your SNES Mini
2. Navigate to /etc/libretro/.config/retroarch/overlay
3. Place the .cfg and .png overlay that you want to use (here are a couple: https://github.com/libretro/common-overlays/tree/master/borders)
4. Go into Retroarch Settings in-game (Start + Select)
5. Onscreen Display > Onscreen Overlay > Overlay Preset
6. Select the .cfg of the overlay you want to use

Note: You'll probably need to play around with the Overlay Scale to get it just right. You cannot set overlay per game, at least to my knowledge.

Okay, do flash custom kernel again. You don't need to uninstall the old one, but do "Kernel -> Flash custom kernel" once more.

(This is feeling like a rushed release..)

So when is open discussion of piracy allowed on GAF? There are clearly people asking what the best type of Tetris etc game so obviously not just people using games they own themselves.

Does this make it perfectly right to start talking about modded consoles and burnt games?

Can I talk about downloaded and bit torrented PC games now too?

But I’m sure people will post justifying what they are doing as something other than piracy.

Please don't, not in here.

No. The rules still apply. As long as people aren't posting places to download roms, the thread is still fine. I'm not keeping up with the thread enough but I'm sure people will either be banned or forced to remove posts asking or directing to illegal downloads.

We're having mature, open discussion in here. There are some very helpful posters and some very thoughtful questions being asked/answered. Please don't come in here and try to stir shit up.

I'm also getting the FelParseException and already created an issue on GitHub with the details from the Debug version. Lets hope this gets fixed soon. Until then: DON'T UPGRADE TO 2.21b!

My SNES Mini is fine though - although I'm now back to stock games.

Mine has everything still but it did turn folders back on which made my interface UGLY.

You shouldn't have reflashed your normal kernel before upgrading the custom. I tried to upgrade the custom and it failed, but at least I didn't lose any of my hacks.

Why tho? You only had to skip the games_snes folder (and making a backup) when copying all the other files to the hakchi folder and your games would be save.

In Hakchi they're all there but flashing the Kernel didn't work quite as intended so I'm now only seeing the original games on the SNES mini. It's nothing big - they'll be back when a fixed version arrives and flashing the Kernel works again.

heck yes that dkc is gorgeous and i like it a lot more than the one i came up with

This is pure awesome, and inspired me to take a stab at the built-in games as well as some others I'd added. Examples below, with the full gallery here: https://imgur.com/a/Zmo12

SNES Classic does this natively, doesn't it? When you reset and create a save state, don't all those save states have time played stamps on them?

Can't you sort the games by the most frequently played? Which would mean that the Mini either keeps track of the time spent on each game or how many times you boot up each game(or both as the Wii U log did), however neither thing is shown.

Here's one

I'm extremely insecure with how much f2p mobile games are encroaching on Nintendo
How do I use the PAL to NTSC tool?

Is there really no way to get the Satellaview games to work right now?
I just want F-Zero 2 really, even though it isn't even that big of a game.

Drooling over the Super Metroid icon. And absolutely using it. ;)
