Can Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart on PC match - and exceed - the PS5 experience?

Some people in here really bought into the whole "PS5 SSD is a scam!" This proves it's not a scam.

Should be timestamped, but this is Rift Apart running on a Steam Deck with SD card.

This is really helpful for me, by the way. I primarily use Linux so the whole directstorage SSD situation had me worried, but it seems to run just fine on the Deck.

I was wrong, I'll admit. But i'm not eating no god damn crow. shit looks disgusting

Well

32GB 6000/MT DDR5/4090/7800X3D

Getting performance in the 100-160 range averaging what feels like 145~

All settings maxed and DLSS3.

Running in 4k, should be noted.

Highly Impressive as it should be with that HW.

What's more evident is the lack of stutter and that it just runs like a well optimized console game. It looks like it should and performs like it should for once. Not that it's pushing bleeding edge visuals but it is at the same time. I'm just impressed with how it loads and moves. This is the kind of stuff I was mentioning the PS5 had an advantage and if this is the future then I welcome it.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
we should be doing 6700xt comparisons as that card is only slightly more powerful than the ps5, plus they have a similar AMD featureset.

oh hey, you're here Rivet Rivet judging by the laughing emoji on one of my posts. So, will you change your avatar & name now that rift apart is on PC?

Was there a bet on this ?

SSD downplaying? If Microsoft could replicate the PS5's specialized hardware architecture with a single DirectX API then it isn't ALL that. They were able to replicate in code what took Mark Cerny a specialized hardware design to do.

That api isn’t running magically by itself without the necessary hardware. It still needs the GPU or CPU to decompress, which is not happening on the PS5.

Their entire job is to critique graphics. They are critics by definition. And they are not above criticism. If I see them using flawed methodology, I am going to call them out, sorry.

Again, this is not the first time.
They did the best they could for a first impressions video. They had the absolute high end, near match for minimum spec and then the best non 120hz PS5 mode (due to mentioned hardware limitations). I'm sure Rich could have done the PS5 side of things but then we would have missed one of the most interesting parts of the video, how the game runs on a minimum spec PC. And for what? Making the poor PS5 look slightly better? When they already had like three videos covering that version of the game?

You are getting worked up and shitting on DF over slightly reduced crowd density. Which will likely be touched upon when the actual analysis video comes out.

Even then he didn't meet minimum specs. I guess its hard to find an old GPU/CPU. He also used an SSD.

WTF is happening?! Seems even NeoGAF is struggling at streaming copium at the moment.
So many people grabbed onto that first video where the Dev says the transitions were only possible at that speed on the PS5 and they turned it into the game is only possible on the PS5

The quote

The SSD is screamingly fast. It allows us to build worlds and project players from one place to another in near instantaneous speeds. It is an unbelievable game-changer in terms of we can now do gameplay where you’re in one world and the next moment you’re in another. We’re loading up levels and that happens so quickly and in the action that you don’t even imagine that this is something we couldn’t do before, because it feels so natural. Long gone are loading screens. Now it’s all about bringing exciting new adventures.

They really think they're proving something here. This sequence is meant to play out at breakneck speed; slowing it down to such a low level really kills the rush you're supposed to feel here.

love how hes trying to prove shit here when hes the moron who bought the game in the first place. Even if it ran not to much slower than on PS5, he still gave Insomniac and Sony money.

They missed the important part.

How so? Loading appears to be one of the things that works well. A 3.5 GBs drive nearly matches the PS5. It's like 1/5 of a second slower without any of the dedicated hardware that a PC has. Seems it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
Huh? I thought the GPU is dedicated hardware.

Yeah. These dudes pounding their chest over milliseconds.

No clue what to think about directstorage or how to properly measure it, this is just the famous rift sequence. It goes up to 694MB/s read when loading into the game from desktop, by far the highest usage ive ever seen for a game.

I dont think theres a way to measure how DS+ssd are actually utilised for the gpu decompression in the game. I believe this reports just the regular loading as the directstorage 1.2 avocado demo shows 16gbps while hwinfo only reports 300-400mbps reads.

Nah, the GPU is used but it's not dedicated to decompression. So basically DirectStorage is offloading some of the decompression to the GPU hence doing exactly what it is supposed to do. No dedicated I/O complex required.

The PS5 version wasn’t using max SSD performance. Insomniac said that R&C was been developed based on earlier PS5 hardware. It wasn’t even maxing out the SSD Capebilities.

Yeah but a 960 2GB is also minimum specs, those two cards do not perform the same. The SSD isn't a HDD either.
Likely don't have a 960. Rich did try the HDD but it kept crashing for him. He actually went through two motherboards as well, the first one blew, second one didn't work, and then finally got one working.

They also mention that they find it highly unlikely the 960 could work due to the 2GB of VRAM.

It's really weird that's the min spec GPU, did they mean a 970?

Yeah, it's a limitation of the game. 3.5GBps drive performs the same as a 7GBps drive. Same behaviour as PS5 where a much slower SSD matches the 5.5GBps one.

PS5 I/O is great, I was simply pointing out DirectStorage is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Not sure how anyone can label it a scam.
