I was browsing some old Wii U news in order to re-hype my mind and found this one from end of last year, by P. Moore (from a Famitsu itw after his trip to the Nintendo HQ):
It’s a very exciting machine and I’m glad to see it out there. I mean, a hi-def Nintendo platform! There’s nothing that could make me happier. Its online capabilities are really extensive, too, so we’ll be able to differentiate ourselves from the competition more easily with our sports lineup.
Confidence restored. Well, just a bit.

In mostly uninteresting news, an engineer who worked on Starlet (Wii IO processor, developed by BroadOn/ iGware) then joined AMD to do some work on the Wii GPU from 2007 to 2008, then went to work on a realtime video encoding chip at some small company I've never heard of for a year, before he once again joined AMD to work on the Wii U LSI in June 2009.

Gamestop preparing for a new hardware generation, with some info about the Wii U

With the current generation of home consoles getting long in the tooth, major retailer GameStop is making preparations for the hardware of tomorrow, and it's sharing much its internal data with manufacturers to ensure these new devices succeed.

Referencing data from a recent consumer survey, GameStop president Tony Bartell pointed out that console manufactures will need to ensure that their devices offer a robust suite of new features if they hope to sell them at a relatively high price.

"We anticipate a high level of innovation in the devices, but we also anticipate that to command the higher price points," Bartell told shareholders on Thursday. "They will have to be sensitive to those things consumers told us are important to them: backwards compatibility, pre-owned games, etc."

While GameStop has chosen to keep most of this survey data out of the public eye -- at least until after E3 -- Bartell pointed out that the company has noted a rising trend in consumers that want to use their consoles for more than playing the latest games.

"We do know that there's an expectation around innovation and use of the device for multi-uses," he said.

During today's financial earnings report, GameStop reported that new hardware sales have declined more than $80 million year over year, and the company is looking forward to the boost in sales a new hardware lineup would bring.

Bartell pointed out that GameStop is already prepared to help launch the first of these new consoles -- Nintendo's Wii U. As it's poised to be the first new machine of the gate, the Wii U will mark the beginning of the new hardware cycle, and GameStop has already devised its launch strategy to take advantage of the eventual spike in hardware sales.

So, assuming that the latest Epic's sentences about the specs of Durango and Orbis related to the UE4 almost exclude Wii U from the race in terms of horsepower (IMHO), what is Gaf position about a Wii U not powerful enough to run it (I'm not asking if you think that it will be able to run it; I'm asking you to propose your opinion about a console that is not able to run it)?

Will the Wii U be doomed as the Wii was in terms of authomatic and easy multiplatform developing? Or, in other word, will the UE4 a milestone for multiplatform developers as the UE3 was? Will the Wii u be damaged by this "limit" as the Wii was by the absence of UE3?

Just read the bullying thread, what was so stupid about the OP that prompted EvilLore to do that? Just out of curiosity?

Did the OP have a history of dumb posts/threads?

BELIEVE!

I thought it would have been awesome to do a co-op Mario game on the Cube where Mario used FLUDD and Luigi had the Poltergust 3000. :(

Actually, I still think the idea of a spin-off with E.Gadd as some mad scientist who creates gadgets for you would be an awesome.. addition to Nintendo's library.

"Small" update regarding the Wii U trademark opposition in England. It now appears that Nintendo should have nothing to fear if they slightly change the opposition (remove some classes of goods and services). The OHIM received on the 15th of May (was published today) a Request for Division (means simply that certain classes of a trademark ought to be removed), and below is what is requested:

I know it's lengthy, but I want to highlight a few things.

List of goods and services to remain with the original application (Information Technology Junction Limited's "U" trademark):

NICE Classification 35: Issuance of reward cards (loyalty cards); advertising and publicity services or providing information thereon; providing information on arranging, conducting and organization of trade shows; issuance of trading stamps or providing information thereon; business management analysis or business consultancy; marketing research or providing information thereon; surveying by questionnaire or providing information thereon; providing information on commodity sales; conducting prizes, quizzes, lots, questionnaires, and games for sales promotion of the goods or services, or providing information thereon; issuance of coupons for sales promotion of the goods or services, or providing information thereon; business management of hotels; arranging newspaper subscriptions or providing information thereon; operation of computers, typewriters, telex machines and similar office machines; providing employment information; retail services or wholesale services for consumer video game apparatus; retail services or wholesale services for programs for consumer video game apparatus; retail services or wholesale services for electronic circuits, magnetic discs, optical discs, optical magnetic discs, magnetic tapes, ROM cards, ROM cartridges, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs and storage media storing programs for consumer video game apparatus; retail services or wholesale services for controllers, joysticks and memory cards for consumer video game apparatus; retail services or wholesale services for parts and accessories for consumer video game apparatus; retail services or wholesale services for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; retail services or wholesale services for programs for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; retail services or wholesale services for electronic circuits, magnetic discs, optical discs, optical magnetic discs, magnetic tapes, ROM cards, ROM cartridges, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs and other storage media storing programs for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; retail services or wholesale services for parts and accessories for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; retail services or wholesale services for card game toys and their accessories; retail services or wholesale services for dolls; retail services or wholesale services for Go games; retail services or wholesale services for Japanese playing cards [Utagaruta]; retail services or wholesale services for Japanese chess [Shogi games]; retail services or wholesale services for card games and their accessories; retail services or wholesale services for dice; retail services or wholesale services for Japanese dice games [Sugoroku]; retail services or wholesale services for dice cups; retail services or wholesale services for diamond games; retail services or wholesale services for chess games; retail services or wholesale services for checkers [checker sets]; retail services or wholesale services for conjuring apparatus; retail services or wholesale services for dominoes; retail services or wholesale services for playing cards; retail services or wholesale services for Japanese playing cards [Hanafuda]; retail services or wholesale services for Mah-jong; retail services or wholesale services for game machines and apparatus; retail services or wholesale services for billiard equipment; retail services or wholesale services for toys, dolls, and game machines and apparatus.

As far as I'm aware, Nintendo UK handles services for retail and wholesale regarding the bolded parts. I believe that if this goes through, they wouldn't be able to in England sell nor repair Wii U (under the name Wii U anyway). But I might be mistaken. Seems to be quite a hindrance anyway.

NICE Classification 38: Electronic bulletin board services [telecommunication services] and providing information thereon; communication by consumer video game apparatus; providing information on communication by consumer video game apparatus; communication by arcade video game machines; providing information on communication by arcade video game machines; communication by handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; providing information on communication by handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; communication by cellular phones; providing information on communication by cellular phones; communication by personal computers or providing information thereon; communication by video telephones; providing information on communication by video telephones; communication by messages and pictures by using computers; telecommunication (other than broadcasting); providing information on program listing of television broadcasting; broadcasting; news agencies; rental of telecommunication equipment including telephones and facsimile apparatus; providing chatrooms or providing information thereon.

While they can do without chatrooms and forums, it could be a nice thing to have. But I can actually see Nintendo dropping this particular class.

NICE Classification 41: Providing images via communication by handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; providing images via communication by arcade video game machines; providing images via communication by consumer video game apparatus; providing images via communication by cellular phones; providing images via communications; providing pictures via communication by handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; providing pictures via communication by arcade video game machines; providing pictures via communication by consumer video game apparatus; providing pictures via communication by cellular phones; providing pictures via communications; providing movies via communication by handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; providing movies via communication by arcade video game machines; providing movies via communication by consumer video game apparatus; providing movies via communication by cellular phones; providing movies via communications; providing music and sounds via communication by handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; providing music and sounds via communication by arcade video game machines; providing music and sounds via communication by consumer video game apparatus; providing music and sounds via communication by cellular phones; providing music and sounds via communications; organization, management or arrangement of video game events; providing games via communication by handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; providing games via communication by arcade video game machines; providing games via communication by consumer video game apparatus; providing games via communication by cellular phones; providing games via communications; providing games for consumer video game apparatus; providing games for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; providing games for arcade video game machines; providing games for cellular phones; rental of storage media storing programs for consumer video game apparatus; rental of storage media storing programs for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; rental of storage media storing programs for arcade video game machines; rental of storage media storing game programs for cellular phones; rental of consumer video game apparatus and arcade video game machines; rental of handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; providing games via telecommunication network; providing games via communication network; educational and instruction services relating to arts, crafts, sports or general knowledge; movie showing, movie film production, or movie film distribution; providing amusement facilities; providing electronic publications.

I'm not exactly sure what "providing" and "communication" means in this context, but I assume it could have to do with eShop, Virtual Console, Netflix and Spotify for example. Perhaps it even applies to communication as issued between a customer and a sales clerk in a video game store. Whatever it means it surely bears the loom of trouble.

NICE Classification 42: Designing; design of hardware for computer games; design, programming or maintenance of programs for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; providing advice and information on design, programming or maintenance of programs for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; design, programming or maintenance of programs for consumer video game apparatus; providing advice and information on design, programming or maintenance of programs for consumer video game apparatus; design, programming or maintenance of programs for arcade video game machines; providing advice and information on design, programming or maintenance of programs for arcade video game machines; creating or maintaining web sites; design, programming or maintenance of other computer software; providing information on creating or maintaining web sites; technical advice relating to performance, operation, etc. of computers, automobiles and other machines that require high levels of personal knowledge, skill or experience of the operators to meet the required accuracy in operating them; rental of storage area of server and providing information thereon; rental of computers; providing computer programs for creating, editing or processing images, illustrations, texts, and designs; providing computer programs for accessing to electronic bulletin board on the Internet; providing computer programs; weather forecasting and meteorological information.

With this gone, I assume Nintendo UK wouldn't be able to communicate with anyone about design or programming. I'm not exactly sure what kind of work regarding that is done by Nintendo UK, but it could be problematic if questions arise regarding AC adapters and such. And I assume they wouldn't be able to follow official guidelines for various things.

List of goods/services for the divisional application (Wii U):

NICE Class 09: Consumer video game apparatus with camera function; consumer video game apparatus; programs for consumer video game apparatus; electronic circuits, magnetic discs, optical discs, optical magnetic discs, magnetic tapes, ROM cards, ROM cartridges, CD-ROMs, and DVD-ROMs storing programs for consumer video game apparatus; storage media storing programs for consumer video game apparatus; controllers, joysticks and memory cards for consumer video game apparatus; protective films for liquid crystal displays of controller of consumer video game apparatus; earphones for consumer video game apparatus; microphones for consumer video game apparatus; monitors for consumer video game apparatus; AC adapters for consumer video game apparatus; parts and accessories for consumer video game apparatus; programs for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; electronic circuits, magnetic discs, optical discs, optical magnetic discs, magnetic tapes, ROM cards, ROM cartridges, CD-ROMs, and DVD-ROMs storing programs for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; storage media storing programs for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; programs for arcade video game machines; electronic circuits, magnetic discs, optical discs, optical magnetic discs, magnetic tapes, ROM cards, ROM cartridges, CD-ROMs, and DVD-ROMs storing programs for arcade video game machines; storage media storing programs for arcade video game machines; arcade video game machines; controllers for arcade video game machines; monitors for arcade video game machines; parts and accessories for arcade video game machines; downloadable computer programs; game programs for computers; computer programs; electronic circuits, magnetic discs, optical discs, optical magnetic discs, magnetic tapes, ROM cards, ROM cartridges, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs and storage media storing programs for computers; portable computers; computers; monitors for computers; portable terminals for displaying electronic publications; mouse (data processing equipment); mouse pads; computer keyboards; printers for use with computers; computer peripheral devices; monitors (computer hardware); scanners (data processing equipment); electronic pens (visual display units); electronic agendas; remote controllers for television receivers; remote controllers for DVD recorders or players; remote controllers for video disc recorders or players; remote controllers for picture recorders; remote controllers for radio receivers; remote controllers for computers; flash memory cards; memory modules; optical discs [blank], magnetic discs [blank], compact discs [blank], and magnetic cards [blank]; game programs for cellular phones; cellular phones; cellular phone straps; parts and accessories for cellular phones; digital cameras; video cameras; DVD players; DVD recorders; audio players; audio recorders; portable apparatus for recording and reproduction of music; portable apparatus for recording and reproduction of video; other apparatus for recording and reproduction of video; monitors for television receiver; television receivers [TV sets] and television transmitters; television tuners; telecommunication machines and apparatus; recorded compact discs; phonograph records; metronomes; electronic circuits and CD-ROMs storing automatic performance programs for electronic musical instruments; downloadable music files; music files; exposed cinematographic films; exposed slide films; slide film mounts; downloadable image files; image files (for both still and moving images); recorded video discs and video tapes; electronic publications; pedometers; measuring or testing machines and instruments; cameras; photographic instruments and apparatus; cinematographic instruments and apparatus; optical apparatus and instruments; batteries and cells; rechargeable batteries; spectacles [eyeglasses and goggles].

NICE Class 16: Notebooks; mechanical pencils; stationery and study materials; trading cards; magazines [publication]; catalogues; pamphlets; other printed matter; photographs; photograph stands; banners of paper; flags of paper.

NICE Class 28: Card game toys and their accessories; handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; protective films for liquid crystal displays for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; AC adapters for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; parts and accessories for handheld game apparatus with liquid crystal displays; toys; amusement machines and apparatus for use in amusement parks (other than arcade video game machines); toys for domestic pets; dolls; Go games; Japanese playing cards [Utagaruta]; Japanese chess [Shogi games]; card games and their accessories; dice; Japanese dice games [Sugoroku]; dice cups; diamond games; chess games; checkers [checker sets]; conjuring apparatus; Dominoes; playing cards; Japanese playing cards [Hanafuda]; Mah-jong; game machines and apparatus; billiard equipment; sports equipment; fishing tackle; insect collecting implements.

I won't comment on classes 09, 16 and 28 seeing as they are what the opposing part wants to grant Nintendo. So, what is going to happen now is that the parties will negotiate an agreement. Cannot they reach such, proceedings will begin in early July.

Changing the name for the contested classes I believe would be very confusing for customers, so I don't see Nintendo accepting this rather, in my opinion, silly opposition.

I've got a (boring and possibly stupid) question:

If Skyrim is running on the 360 is the equivalent of low/medium/whatever settings of the PC version, what equivalent settings level would the bump in Wii U specs (based on the most likely scenario - bit of a bump, but not as big a bump as next gen Xbox/PS4) enable it to run at?
Presumably not full settings, 1080p, 60FPS, but would there be a significant improvement?

I max out PC version on my HD 5850 (much better than speculated Wii U specs) and get about 45 - 50fps in towns, 60fps+ outside of towns (after the update, before that towns would be 20fps). My CPU is not the best though, but I play at (1600x900) 900p.

I don't think Wii U would max it out at 1080p 60fps or medium at 1080p 60fps. It could max it out though, but at 30fps I would say.

I expect most Wii U games to be 720p, but proper 720p at least and not many sub-720p games.

Well you could get max settings at 60 fps...if they render just to the sub screen :)

Really not much point in wasting time thinking about it. Signs point out to an slight increases in specs. The most benefit will be taken from a significant memory increase. The Nintendo fan would be blown away watching their favorite series getting a vastly face lift in relation to the Wii. If there's one thing Nintendo excels at is graphic design, their visuals are a combination of great aesthetics and functionality.

Unannounced Title should be the best...

From another Sega guy, this one from Sega US (the previous was Australia):
Current Projects:
Aliens: Colonial Marines (360/PS3/PC/Wii U)
Unannounced Title (XBLA/PSN/PC/Wii-U)
Are we talking here about 2 different digital titles or the same one? At least one Sega title is in the wok for the Ushop.

I'd put good money on it being Sonic 4 Episode 3.

Clearly it's a new Panzer Dragoon game.

Now imagine what Super Mario Universe will look like

Get hype!

My brain drools at the possibilities.

Remember the green star you had to get at the end of that stage with Cloud Mario? One of the greatest challenges in any Mario game.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Afternoon.
Have I missed anything since the Green and White / Ace Attorney revelations?

Also, has anyone suggested Slippy Toad as the Green and White solution?

What is this green and white thing?
Jumpman23 claimed to have seen something green and white relating to the Wii U. A ton of (mostly light hearted) posts were made trying to discern what this may be.
The guy may have actual insider information, but he may just be some schmuck having fun toying with the thread. I don't think we have any reason to believe he knows anything.

Yep. And Nintendo have patented a bizarre new idea for Club Nintendo points (codes on the box - not in an insert) which seems to be their attempt to put people off buying second hand games.

So, this question might have been asked and answered, but I don't remember seeing it, so here goes.

IdeaMan said that developers have been pushing Xbox360++ graphics on the Wii U, and this running 720p@30fps+ on main screen (how much + though?), and secondary view on the controller with Xbox360++ graphics running 480p@30fps+ (how much + though?). Now IF the secondary view would ONLY be a inventory-screen, instead of a Xbox360++ view in 480p@30fps+.

How much better would developers be able to push it on the main screen with Xbox360++ graphics, 720p@60fps, 1080p@30fps?

I'm still expecting WiiU to have a GPU with over 600gflops (including the dedicated lighting hardware if it exists) vs the 240Gflops of 360's GPU . A CPU that's a bit more powerful plus the I/O controller and DSP effectively giving twice the CPU performance and 2GB of ram.

I think that should be enough to get Skyrim on max settings at 720p 30fps, IF the developer makes an effort of course.
