LttP: Earthbound

BTW if I can make a suggestion if you're not already doing this, the guide for Earthbound isn't just a spoiler machine like most guides, it's a good game companion, as in read the "news articles" at the start of each new area in the guide since it describes a lot and adds its own bit of flair to playing the game.

Thanks. I actually just started reading parts of it and I love it. I'm trying to only look at it after I beat a section though so as not to spoil. Which is cool because as an example, this made the
special Jeff mission which I just completed
a big surprise for me.

Brilliant game.

I've got a lot to say about this game, but i'll post that on another time since my time here is limited. It's a shame that so many people have heard of this game but haven't played it. It's really a great experience.

Love the game to death have fun with it. But I'm so sorry you paid $350 just to have the cartridge and a guide that scans can easily be found online.

Having a real guide in my hands is way more preferrable to tediously printing out scans, plus it has all the scratch and sniff cards 100% intact which adds greatly to its resell value. I still have all of my player's guides from when I was a kid, they're part of my collection and still get used whenever I replay a game. So it's useful, it's not just a collectible.

I wish I didn't have to pay such a high price either but it's been worth every penny so far. The game is incredibly addictive and playing it on my SNES makes me feel like I time travelled back to the '90s and am a teenage gamer all over again. :)

But yeah, as I said in earlier posts, Iwata and Itoi really need to figure out a way to re-release the game. Even if it means combing through the whole game and editing whatever the lawyers are worried about, rewriting some of the jokes and replacing some of the pop song riff tunes, just do it!

It's a form of entertainment that brings you hours upon hours of enjoyment. People spend way more.

I am also sorry the OP is trying to have fun.

I think the game would sell very well if it was put on the VC, even if Nintendo had to pay a little bit of money to get the problematic parts edited. The fan community alone is quite large and they'd probably throw themselves at it. After many years a lot of interest has built up over the Mother series and I bet Earthbound would get a lot of "curiosity downloads" too. Just seems like a no-brainer if there's a way to take out the lawyer bait.

Hot damn at those prices for this game! I had no idea it was worth that much today. Sadly I only have the guide and don't even own the game anymore. I think I want to sell the guide. $100 is tempting for something I haven't read in years. But then I imagine what it might be worth five years from now. Hmmmm.

An amazing book though. The effort and love that went into the guide is stupendous. I can't blame the OP for wanting to track it down.

Favorite game of all time for me. I'm only 21, but as a very young child (I think 4 or 5) I watched my brothers playing when I couldn't even read the text. The first and only time I have ever cried playing a video game was when
the bubble monkey left on Tessie.
My strategy guide and cartridge are really beat up so I don't know how much value they have, but it's definitely my most prized game.

I just got to Saturn Valley and does Jeff always have low defense or something? I've got him at level 22 with 121 HP and he still takes a pounding from most enemies. I made sure he had all the latest equipment too. Any tips?

"WE FEEL GROOVE! HI HO. ME MR. SATURN."

haha This game is so crazy.

LOVE Mr. Saturn/s! Well, just took down this guy:

Well finally got Jeff and
rescued Ness and Paula in the Skyrunner, whoo!
Threed is one creepy area. LOVE Winters, especially
the Monkey and Tessie.
Also, Jeff's intro music is my fave new track in the game:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qk3GggiQGso&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Always loved that music, as well as the music plays in Winters. Jeff's theme is actually called "Snowman", and was played in a town of that name in the first Mother game:

Awesome, thanks. Just added to my YouTube favorites. 'Dem 8-bit musical tones. I hear Mother 1 is much harder than EB, still want to play it someday though.

Also, when I get a chance I'm going to post pictures of the scratch and sniff cards from the player's guide.

Jeff has meh defense and no PSI but he's awesome. You can buy/find really good items only he can use, and he'll fix more broken items as he levels up and sleeps at hotels and such.

Thanks for the tip. Seems like he's gotten better after leveling him up one more time in Saturn valley, he didn't seem to take too much damage in the Master Belch fight. He's definitely my fave character. I'm going to start giving him more items so he can fix 'em although I have no idea what he's gonna do with a broken spray can. :p

broken spray can = defense spray!

some of the items he can fix are pretty cool, like the hungry hp sucker and the heavy bazooka!

make sure you give all the IQ capsules to Jeff, since he needs to be over a certain IQ level to fix things!

Even if you have the right IQ level, it might take a few times for Jeff to fix the item in his inventory. Just go to saturn village and stay at the free inn over and over until he repairs it.

Cool, thanks. Will definitely be looking out for those IQ capsules now.

So Kraken 1 hit wiped out my party with his breath fire attack. Well Ness was fine because I had him equipped with the Flame Pendant, but everyone else wasn't. I looked up whether the Flame Pendant is purchaseable anywhere but it isn't.

I was pretty surprised because I made my way through the last dungeon,
Dalaam
with relative ease. I upgraded to a Diamond Pendant for Paula to increase her defence by 10 points, but it didn't make a difference. I don't remember anyone's levels except Ness, who is 49. I guess I gotta grind? I'm out of ideas.

OK, so last month I got a Jeff figure as you saw my pictures of, today this came in the mail:

These Banpresto figures rock, it's just as high quality as the Jeff figure.

I also decided to pose him on our green and yellow striped chair as a nice color matching foreground with our green pillow with its round-squiggly pattern which makes a perfect Mother-esque pseudo Earth logo background of sorts:

Where are you buying these from? I must buy Ness one right now.

Got the whole gang last year from ebay. Well worth the cost. The Starman Deluxe is the most impressive imo but they're all good quality figures.

eBay, there's a US dealer who has been selling a ton of them sporadically for the last month or so. :) His auction pictures all have some kind of black and white background behind the figures.

Due to the usual distractions of summer (like for one, just taking a walk and getting some fresh air), it's been a few weeks since I played the game. Last night I finally got past Threed and am now in the desert. I love the new enemies, especially the Smilin' Spheres (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy visual reference?) and Crested Bookas. And when was the last time you fought a buffalo in a JPRG? Haha It's ever more apparent Itoi really did intend this game to be American themed.

I usually breeze through the desert initially. I do like both of the dungeons there. No.3 mole and monkey cave!

I love the twangy, clanky music on the highway. This game's impeccable sense of atmosphere never ceases to impress me.

Ack....heat stroke drives me crazy.

Glad to see this bumped; had feared you'd given up

No sir, I started a new file about a month ago, file hasn't erased yet, having a blast. I still dunno why removing the cartridge fried it. In any case, the game is staying cemented in my SNES until I've beaten it.

After I finish it I'll eventually send it in to have the battery replaced with a custom pop clasp if that guy from that other forum ever gets back to me...

Yeah, i love that song. It totally feels like waiting outisde a hot idle car in a summer traffic jam :)

Edit: wow, didn't know that was a Mother 1 song. Amazing what they did with the source material.

Righteth! Never had a chance to play this back in the day, but reading this thread has inspired me that Earthbound is precisly the sort of game younger me would have *loved*. Think I may just give it a go tonight!

Glad to see you still trekking through, I myself have started playing it again, sent this picture to all my swapnote buddies.

Reminds of those old Pokemon paper things they used to release in Nintendo Power.

Jesus at that Ness figure. I'm not really into collecting figures but I might make an exception for that, it's so cool

Generally not, they have lower accuracy than bats.

Other bad weapon spoilers:

Speaking of bad accuracy, I picked up a great looking bat just recently and it's been so long since I played Earthbound that I was wowed by it's stats and didn't clue in to the hint in it's name that its accuracy is not so great (Google "Casey at Bat"). Be weary of the Casey Bat.

Been busy with real life stuff and summer things so hadn't had a chance to play the game for awhile. Got past the desert (since after fighting some enemies and exploring the two caves which for now seem to be dead ends, I had no idea what to do there anymore at this point) and landed in Fourside. Love the giant buildings and "big city feel."

Thanks, will definitely avoid. I checked my item list right away to make sure I didn't have it after I read this. 8)
