Well, actually two of the main selling points (not related to "sales age" but in terms of what Wii U should be able to offer) are:

Off-tv gameplay
Asymmetric multiplayer

THe first aspect is heavily marketed by New Mario (do you remember also the very first look they gave us of the Wii U at E3 2011?) while the second is heavily focused by NintendoLand.

Probably, while the remote had one major aspect to be presented (motion sensor = Wii Sport) Wii U has various different aspects (such as the two discussed, plus the Miiverse - once again presented by New Mario - plus the second window on the game universe - presented by Zombi - and so on) so we don't have just one game that becomes the icon of the console itself, but different games each and every one focused on some of the new features of the console

That said, probably none of those aspect is so strong as the motion sensor of Wiisport, but I have to admit that back in the days a lot of gamers were very suspicious about Wiisport if not worst, so the actual disinterest of gamers in those iconic games doesn't surprise me. Also back in the days thare was more interest in Galaxy (because it looked great, not because of wii-speficic elements), so I think that the disappointment we feel is because of the lack of a brand new game "for us". Gamepad or not.

I think the third big selling point will be Miiverse. It just hasn't really been given a ton of attention yet.

Anyway, people, shit, just buy more than one console. If you are a fan of Nintendo games, then you know you've gotta buy the Wii U. And the reality is that there is a huge hardcore install base on both the MS and PS platforms. Devs are still going to push those. Not to mention any cool first party games from MS or Sony. Spending $600 for consoles over a 5 year (or way more as this gen has shown us) span shouldnt be that big of a deal.

Im just sick off all the "LOLZ Wii U not power ful enough for current gen!"

The console isn´t even out yet.

Even if there would be a game looking clearly better than anything current gen this would be GAFs reaction:

"NO!!!!! HALO 4 looks tons better just look at the grass far away in the background over there!!!"

No matter whats under the hood of any Nintendo console. This crap will never end.

The proper response to idiocy isn't being an idiot yourself.

Also, an unnamed developer, but totally a trusted source said the WiiU controller will be made from some sort of plastic. We should debate this and whether said plastic contains conflict materials for a few pages.

is the cardboard black?

Reports are contradictory.

WiiUDONTKNOWSHIT.com reports that they're actually lime green, for example.

So, for some more serious talk:

Do you think some types of games we've seen on the Wii and thought "oh that's a perfect fit for motion/pointer controls" actually didn't work so great or could be even more improved with the integrated touch screen this time?

I think we've already mentioned strategy games a couple of times already but I also think that classic point and click adventure games could benefit from the controller as well. Obviously stuff like Zack & Wiki was genius and perfectly designed for the Wiimote but few games used the tech in similarly inventive ways from that genre.

Any other ideas?

Hahaha, now who sounds bitter and defensive? Not even entering into a discussion with anyone who refutes it. Clearly a case of rose tinted glasses when you can watch a multitude of ZU videos and it's there plain as day. Oh dear.

Same, it's just not up for debate.

How does the sentence "I doubt that's true" come off "bitter and defensive"? You're on another level, dude.

I'm a huge gamer, I own a gaming PC, PS3 and a 360 in addition to a Wii and NSMB has huge appeal for me, NSMB Wii was one of the best Mario platformers, speak for yourself when using terminology such as "us".

Since when is Pikmin 3 not a gamers game?

Also its Nintendo, there is a 100 percent chance there will be their usual "core" games on the Wii-U, I mean being cold on the system at launch is one thing, but if you are going to justify dissapointment as a non-finite thing in the entire platform on the basis of no core nintendo games it simply reaks of impatience.

I don't understand how you could have find "bad words" about New Mario U and Pikmin3 in my post, honestly.

The thread has gone from people who want the WiiU ---> people who want to argue about the WiiU.

All of our Nintendo threads will end this way as long as certain Nintendo fans continue to act like they're being victimized. Nintendo isn't being treated unfairly. Nor will it be unfair in the future to compare its capabilities to that of the new Sony/Microsoft consoles. Owners of PS3 and 360 deal with it too. Darksiders 2, Saints Row the Third, Sleeping Dogs are all "good for a console", but great on the PC. It's normal. It's not a conspiracy.

Just wanted to pipe in and say, I wish most fans of any of the three console makers (and sometimes PC), had this mature mindset. It would be way more pleasant in the long run then.

Short, but incredibly good post. Hats off for you.

The fourth big selling point is local multiplayer. Wii U launch lineup is made of an unprecedent number of 2 to 5 multiplayer games. Developpers are banking on the fact people own wiimotes already. If I were Nintendo, I would put as much focus on this as on asymmetric gameplay in future ads.

MGS looks like this because it has huge production values and a big budget behind it. You shouldn't expect many (if any) Wii U games to look like this.

Cut-scenes aside, AsCreed 3 is more graphically impressive than the new MGS. Also, Wii U would have games that looks like that if Kojima bothered to port over the game. Is hardly something to do with the hardware.

Why are you so on the offensive today? I vaguely remember you as quite calm from earlier posts and not kicking up dust like today.

Lol, apparently not mate, apparently I need to cling on to things to help get me through the thread >_>

Not in the mood for entertaining the bullshit and overly negative compensated jaded opinions of the same old same old. I've 20/20 vision and I'm not going to be instructed on where my thoughts stand in the pecking order. I'm standing my ground so anyone who doesn't like it just pop me in your ignore list.

Overall in a good mood though; Liverpool are down 0-2 :p

Just to play devils advocate here: how are you measuring this? That goes for both sides of the argument.

It's in the previous thread.

Because of course it's the Nintendo fans doing all the things that make the thread unpleasant?

I seriously thought you were just joking/sarcastic with your previous posts. Guess I was wrong.

Sorry if this has been asked but... Would it be possible for Nintendo to release a bluray "app" that enables bluray playback?
Or is that dependent on hardware?

IDK, but homebrewers enabled DVD playback on the Wii, so technically Nintendo could release a DVD playback app for that system. I doubt anyone here has enough info to answer your question, though.

It reads Bluray based discs, so probably yes. Same situation on Wii, it was hacked to play DVD movies.

Nintendo itself won't do it because of licensing fees, most likely. Hackers might be able to do it, as others have mentioned.

Do we know the media types that the Wii U plays yet?
I think they were confirmed to be "fake" Blu-Ray disks, but I don't remember where.

Cool. Releasing an app seems like a reasonable way for them to not include the licensing fees in the price of the system. Hope they do something like this.

But idiocy is the main language spoken on GAF unfortunately

Ah what the hell im outta here. Thread is annoying as hell...

Urm i bet Nov 18 is US release IMO yay (<-- ON TOPIC)

The hell? Seriously what happened here? Did everyone collectively lose their mind? The MGS reveal might have done more harm than good here, granted it is pathethic that Nintendo couldn't even get it for the WiiU.

I think a lot of people here need to stop taking everything so serious.

We pretty much know that the WiiU will be the same situation as the Wii again. Just that we will now get Vita ports instead of PSP ports. Yay. And again, Nintendo doesn't give two shits about that. It is obvious that their efforts to get 3rd parties on board was all talk, no action. That much I don't think anyone can deny. Iwata still seems to think that 3rd parties want to save money on new projects, when in fact they don't care how bloated a budget gets as long as they get the media attention and mindshare. If they want to save money they just disolve studios or merge them.
I think Iwata is a bit naive if he thinks that 3rd parties would chose a business model that is sustainable, but doesn't offer much headroom for aggressive expansion.
No 3rd party can allow themselves to fall behind the tech curve. Shiny graphics sell, and if you're not COD having dated graphics usually means you're shit out of luck in this market.

The WiiU seems like a philosopher among boxers. It tries to appeal by virtue instead of brute power, but it seems to me that the only innovation wanted is more power, and all the fluff that comes with it. This industry defines creativity by the fabric that displays it, not by the actual creative energy that was poured into it. Especially around hardware transitions this skewed idea that more power = more creative possibilities allways seems to be most persistent. Then the new hardware launches and for the most part the first year or so is plagued with boring unimaginative crap that is strong on the graphic fluff but weak at actually moving gaming forward.

I truly wonder if we'll see some big budget 3rd party games at all for WiiU. At most we'll see ports made by 10 to 15 college students done in a shed and high on terpentine.

"Proprietary technology*", according to Reggie Fils-Aime.

*12 cm "proprietary high-density optical discs" (25 GB per layer) and 12 cm Wii optical discs.

So no hope that my GC titles will still work? Bummer, but life goes on if true. Fortunately the one GC title I always return to (Pikmin) is getting the Wii U treatment. Whoot.

First thing of value I've seen you contribute unfortunately. Gladly.

There's something wrong with me because I'm finding it really difficult to be arsed. I must need help.

I seriously thought you were just joking/sarcastic with your previous posts. Guess I was wrong.

How do you know my sarcasm isn't just next-gen? Maybe it can't be ported down to other generations.

I thought the same, but someone told me that playing movies requires a drive with something in it that makes it last longer for constant disc spinning, something which makes the drive cost more. Don't know if that is an absolute fact, but if it cost more, will Nintendo include it.

No intention of using it myself, but would be a really nice option for lots of people to download the app which include the blu-ray licence.

Wii U is not backwards compatible with Gamecube games, only with Wii games. Gamecube titles on the Wii U eShop... believe.

No way, the CPU on the Ps4 is gonna be an order of magnitude more powerful than the Cell!

10x!
According to Sony.

Now see. I ignored the response to Coldblooder because I actually agreed. But like I've said before you do this a lot. Maybe you just don't realize it.

No, we do not know that, so the rest of your post is senseless.

The writings are on the wall. I for one will not hold out hope that 3rd parties will support Nintendo this time. I waited for those "games that need to be designed with the Wii (U)s input device in mind" and guess what, outside of two or three exemptions these games never materialized.

We have the same excuses now, the same pathethic commitment from 3rd parties again and the same attitude. Add to that, that even companies like THQ who actually did sell some games on Wii and would've probably had an easy time getting a port of games like Metro Last Light to sell on WiiU, are actively distancing themselves and their projects from the WiiU and yeah, I tend to judge the WiiU to become the same barren wasteland that the Wii was for the most part. And no, late ports and downgraded versions like Batman Arkham City aren't cutting it for me.

On top of that, 3rd parties want to upgrade to better tech, cause their whole business is centered around visual and technical prowess. They need better tech to be competitive. Again, unless you are COD, having outdated tech is a huge comercial disadvantage.
Most advertisement and PR centers around graphics and presentation. Gameplay is absolutely secondary if not tertiary as I'd argue that even sound has started to become more important than actual gameplay in videogame PR.

Something something Kojima's statement regarding Wii U.

Which publisher outside of Capcom has come out and commented on Wii U in public and how they still need to reveal their plants ? While I agree with others that Japanese support should be expected to be better than Western support, we've heard almost nothing from them. Some games get announced (Sonic Racing), whereas all this supposedly great support by others is kept secret because of this legendary NDA. I just fear at the end of the year it turns out that there really wasn't this super-strict NDA, that they really don't give a crap.

There was no NDA, there simply were no games at all to announce. I'd be glad to eat crow, but at this point you'd have to be pathologically optimistic to still believe that all this expected lineup is just not announced yet due to some sort of draconian NDA.

I keep my expectations in check as right now the 3rd party support simply seems abysmal (with the exception of Ubisoft and 5th cell)
