Crazy how much cynical and bitterness in every Wii U thread.

Wii U is coming around at just the right time as the industry is bombing.

It needs a new console with immense popularity to become the industry leader so this is a good thing.

I think it will be awesome. I am going to get one when Pickmin and Wonderful 101 comes out. I really have nothing else I want during the Launch Window.

I'm pretty happy that I chose the 'ship' option as opposed to pickup for my pre-order now. I don't want to be anywhere near these stores around launch..

oh crap so this one is ACTUALLY going to be in high demand. I got a 3DS at launch for this reason, and that never materialized... so I did the reverse this time

oh well there's time before Pikmin 3 releases.

I just don't understand they hype. Is this all because of what happened with the Wii at launch? A bunch of people trying the corner the market on craigslist / ebay?

It's the successor to a console that sold 100 million units.
NSBMU is the successor to a game that sold 25 million copies.
It has something new as far as the controller.

This console is going to be massive. The mainstream advertising campaign hasn't even rolled out yet.

Amazing how this little internet Gaf world misses these facts and focuses on things irrelevant to console wars like specs.

Maybe this supposed phenomenon of Wii owners who forgot about the system and stopped caring to play with their smartphones instead was greatly exaggerated?

I mean the Wii sold ~36 million units in NA alone, you have to imagine a least a food chunk of those would be excited about a follow up system coming out.

No. It's a new nintendo system. That is where all the hype is coming from. I thought that would go without saying since I'm sure everyone on this forum knows how their fanbase is (hell i'm part of it). Plus nintendo gained alot of consumer goodwill with the wii. The last two years aside, many people enjoyed and had genuine fun with the wii so they are of course excited for the successor

I'll add a few more:

People are starved for new hardware, even if this is just a stop-gap until PS 4 and next Xbox.
Priced right for a nice family Xmas gift at $299/349

Nintendo also seems to be making a halfass attempt this time towards third parties. They're getting Black Ops II and secured Bayonetta and the next Monster Hunter as exclusives.

I want to secure my spot in the MiiVerse :(

Pikmin 3 must be getting one hell of a polishing job not even sure why it slipped out of Launch
or maybe they loved the eat and poop idea from Nintendo Land and are busy adding it

Why are people so excited about this thing?
Because finally I can get my collection of Virtual Console (and some WiiWare) games bound to a real account on a fresh system, rather than having to sink with the ship.

Also there's a new Mario platformer and Pikmin title I guess.

I'm curious as to where you live that you were able to walk in on day 1 and get a Wii system like the shelves were about to buckle from all the weight of unsold systems.

You couldn't walk into a store where I live until the next Spring and see a Wii sitting on the shelf.

Also, before you make your bold prediction about WiiU systems just sitting there for the average person to walk in and buy whenever they feel like it, some history for you - since the year 2000, there have only been 2 consoles in the U.S. that weren't supply constrained to the point where you could walk into a store and buy one at any time within the first couple of weeks that it launched - the Gamecube and the PS3. The Gamecube because, well, it was a Cube, and PS2 had a year head start on it in the U.S., and the PS3 because of $599 USD.

That's not to say you absolutely won't be able to just walk into a store and get one. Some people will follow the UPS trucks, some people will get lucky right after UPS has made a delivery and they've just restocked the shelves.

But keep this in mind - the general media hasn't even been talking about Wii U yet, and pre-orders are already sold out everywhere. Its the follow up to the best selling console of last generation, and there's a good segment of the hardcore audience who are starving for some new hardware at this point. I have no doubt that Nintendo will sell every single WiiU they can ship from now until probably the end of January or early Spring.

I actually didn't look day 1. It was about a week or two after (maybe a month? I didn't really follow the Wii to be honest as I had a 360 and didn't care much until my girlfriends kid really started wanting one). But it was Portland, OR at the Burnside Fred Meyer since you were curious. I got about 3-4 of them there because friends at work didn't want to be bothered to go store searching since they were hard to find, just not impossible. I also mentioned no hyperbole about "shelves buckling" ... come on dude, stop being so defensive. I didn't insult Nintendo, no need to come to the defense of them.

I know the Wii U will be tough to find, if not nigh impossible due to honest orders and of course the sellers. "Bold prediction"? Come on man, seriously, what's with the hyperbole? I said a simple statement and you're forming it into this attack or some shit.

As for your prediction, it's probably a pretty safe one. But I've never had a problem with a little searching for a day on a weekend finding a PS2, 360, Wii, or any other system. It might not be DAY WON OMG but it's not like I'm waiting for months. And regarding the "coming off the heels" statement ... nothing is forever. The N64 "came off the heels" of the best selling system. The PS3 "came off the heels" of the best selling system (plus the PS2 has sold more than the Wii and had a lot more consumer confidence).

I don't doubt the Wii U will sell. I honestly can think of very few video game systems that have sold poorly at launch. I am just unsure with tablet computers and such if it will be the runaway success that the Wii was. But of course it will sell amazing for the first couple months. Hell, I have absolutely no interest in the software at this point and I want one!

For the past year people have been crying for a next gen console, and here it is.

I can't speak for everybody, but for the past year I've been 'crying' for a new 360 or PS3.

Well I put my name in yesterday on a 32gb, and was told that they expect it to be to within the first week because they have the most orders in the district so they expect to get a lot. Unless Nintendo short ships them. Doesn't matter to me when I get it, as long as I do.

I'm just excited for new hardware, and I know I'm going to get at least one generation defining title like Super Mario Galaxy. I plan to get NSMBU, Rayman, and Zombi U at launch. I might get a couple more that I would normally get on PS3 if they turn out really good. My wife is already going crazy over Nintendoland.

This. It's consistently selling out of pre-orders everywhere, so much so, that programs like these have to be set up, and people are trying to spin it as failure.

After going through post histories though, the same people trying to kill the Wii U early are spinning the Vita's consistent failures since launch as a good thing. Mind-boggling.

Which ones?

Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, Smash Bros, Pokemon, Mario and Bayonetta. Duh.

Question, why do people keep posting the pre-order articles of systems that didn't sell that well regardless of pre-orders?

I have no clue either. It certainly still looks like a up-res Wii game, so that can't be it.

Also, is anyone else going to miss the extremely hilarious and clever treasure hunt item descriptions from the second game? Man, those were amazing...

ALSO, last year my fiancee got me Kinect for our anniversary. She heard about it and keeps informed about new game hardware because she knows that's what I enjoy. Of course she couldn't know that Kinect was a huge piece of shit, or that I had already played it and confirmed it to be the worst piece of new 'game technology' since Virtual Boy.

This year, she apparently heard about Wii U and put a pre-order for the standard edition at the local Gamestop before they sold out. I was talking to her about it and was telling her my disappointment that I wouldn't be able to get one for a little while even after launch without a hunt, and she couldn't keep it a secret. Seems she did right by me this year, mmm. Extra love for her this year for her birthday <3

Because the Wii U is going to be a sales titan and they probably don't want it to become the industry leader this generation. To be blunt.

Wishful thinking on their part.

I've always thought that if someone made chart extenders that somehow connected to regular charts,we wouldn't have to worry about anything ever getting off the charts again. And that guy would be rich I think.

I'm thinking the delay is just for spacing of releases.

I don't mind if it's the industry leader next gen. As long as I can get my fix of high profile games (next gen GTAs, Uncharteds, Halos, Forza, etc) on the PS4/720, Wii U can lead all it wants.

To me it's funny that I've owned all three consoles but don't have or want any of the games you listed :p

I'll be getting The Last of Us though because survival horror.

Do people actually still think Pikmin 3 looks like a up-res Wii game still?

It definetly is no upres Wii game, but I think you can clearly see the Wii development time it had and therefore its roots. But the DoF it utilizes is impressive imo, also the shadows and lightning. It would be amazing if Pikmin 3 had weather effects and also lightning

How many Pikmin can you control in 3?.

I would have thought with the HUGE increase in resources, many more Pikmin could be handled.

From what I've seen its about the same.

I don't populating the screen with more Pikmin was ever a focus though.

I'm not super excited. I might not even buy any launch games, besides the pack-in Nintendoland. That said, here are some reasons I decided to preorder.

1) Even though I still have a perfectly working Sony CRT, I'm never going to game on it again. That TV has been relegated to the guests' room. It's the biggest reason I skipped the Wii, and I now welcome Nintendo to HD gaming, wholeheartedly.

2) There are announced games that I am already looking forward to, so it's more than just blind expectations of good games being made for the system.

3) Since I already decided I want the system, despite not being too interested in the launch games, I also don't want to have to deal with another Wii scenario, e.g., having to line-up overnight for a Wii even a year after launch. I did this for a young family member who wanted one.

For me, I foresee the Wii U being an exclusives machine. I don't see myself buying any multiplatform games for it, especially once PS4/720 rolls out.

There is absolutely no doubt, even if we didn't already know that Pikmin 3 Wii U is a result of carried over Wii development.*

The texture detail is extraordinarily sub-par, barely-first gen 360 stuff. The level geometry is extremely low by any next-gen standard, which shouldn't even be the case as Pikmin levels have never been known to be astronomically large and impressive. Character models in particular are painfully outdated by modern standards.

Its basic disconnection from last-gen appear to be a slightly beefier poly count, higher res textures and some basic next-gen shaders. It is absolutely what a game that has been pulled from the previous gen would look like had minimal effort been put into its presentation. Just compare to something like Viva Pinata and see what a next-gen game is supposed to look like, when in the hands of a capable developer.

Pikmin 3 is my most anticipated game right now altogether, as Pikmin 2 was one of my most favorite games of all time. Nintendo is new to next-gen, and I can forgive them some stumbling forward, but I am not new to next-gen and know what the baseline standard should be for games in this generation. My standards are altogether much, much higher, and the potential of Pikmin as a visual powerhouse is pretty obvious given what the concept is. Shit, Nintendoland Pikmin looks way better visually, a mini-game gimmick tech demo for christ's sake

Obviously when someone says 'up-res Wii game' they're using hyperbole-for-effect, but it is painfully obvious where the engines roots are. It is almost in-your-face unimpressive from a technical perspective, owning only its 60fps.
