Rumor: Wii U final specs

When are we expecting tear-down analyses - how soon after past console launches has information been forthcoming?
3DS got x-rayed one day after release and the full tear down came a day later (North America).

Vita got a tear down weeks after it released in Japan.

Just don't expect too much from a day 1 tear down beyond what we already know... We don't normally go into a new Nintendo console knowing how much ram, or already having seen the main board and the CPU (as we saw in Iwata Asks).

About the only thing we'll get from the tear down for sure is the type of ram and memory bus.

Yep, and even then it's all but guaranteed that it's DDR3 on a 128-bit bus. Hopefully there'll be some kind of surprise on there once someone gets around to cataloging individual components, though.

I agree. At the very least 25 gb should be there. Makes me wonder if Nintendo will release a model with more space a couple of years from. How likely would that be?
On the one hand, they didn't in six years with Wii. On the other, they've now set precedent for having SKUs with different storage capacities.

Imagine the 1GB of Ram for games was DDR5...

Believe haha ;).

What if it was XDR? :O

Both GDDR5 (there is no DDR5) and XDR have pretty high latency, which goes against what we've heard from devs about low-latency RAM. The most likely surprise might be some novel kind of flash memory (there were rumors of the OS having its own 512MB of flash memory distinct from the 8GB/32GB, which could be something interesting like PCM).

If it were, there would be no eDRAM. And the eDRAM should be way faster and lower latency than any off-chip RAM imaginable. The only problem is that the two pool design means more work for developers, as they need to think about where to store what and plan and code accordingly. It's possible that some of the issues we're seeing with first generation ports have to do with the unique memory layout.

Ummm...Didn't the Xbox 360 have a two-pool memory setup (512MB Unified RAM and 10MB eDRAM)?

The combination of the larger size (meaning it can hold more than just the framebuffer), alongside the increased bandwidth/decreased latency that comes with being on-die, and high-bandwidth, low-latency access for the CPU, makes it much more versatile than the XBox360's eDRAM.

OK everyone. Ive watched you throw fits for months now arguing over this topic. Now its time to find out whats inside, just to realize that it never mattered at all. Those of you who were wrong, will be forgiven and you will still go around acting like you "know things". Those of you who were right will not be given any actual credit, and the people who insulted you over your reasoning will not learn to stfu until they have something worth saying. Time for this waste of time and life to end. Im ready.

You lack processing power... :p just kidding

What are they judging it by? NSMBU? They don't know anymore than the rest of us.

According to them:

The whole UI is also astonishingly slow and laggy, which makes little sense on such a low-res system. Every single time you go to the main screen, it takes 10 or 15 seconds to load — apps take just as long, even when all they do is throw up the "this doesn’t work yet" error message. Mario takes a solid 30 seconds to load, during which time it shows a static photo with no indication that anything is happening. Patience is a virtue, but so is processing power. I don’t have the first, and the Wii U doesn’t have the second.

Give me a break. USB hard drives are apparently too hard for the public to understand, but plugging a USB drive into an Xbox or locating the bay door to slot in a HDD just so you can play Halo 4 multiplayer is apparently no problem? Same with expanding a PS3's storage?

Headline for this should be "Internet bitches that problem has solution". Buy USB hard drive, plug in said hard drive, now you're set.

I bitched about the 360's lack of storage day 1. The damn Xbox original had more storage space than Arcade edition.

Wrong about the issues themselves?

Not really from what I've seen. Completely wrong about the cause and fix though.

Yeah I meant the cause. As in, it's slow in loading due to an underpowered machine. Most likely it's the flash.

Anyway, 10-15 seconds to boot to the main menu is fucking pathetic.

Ideaman, wherefore art thou ?.

Someone hit the Ideasign !.

So the console is out, the games your sources have been making are released, care to spill some more 'beans' ? :).

Well, for all the DDR3 drama, i can say that i've never heard once complains from my sources about it.

On the rest, don't know a lot about the GPU. For the CPU, i'll reveal a little golden nugget in a few days/weeks when the mood will calm down a bit, nothing major though (like the frequency).

Cheers !, any idea if the UI can be made faster with updates ?. Not a major concern as i will be in game mostly but would be nice for 360 UI level speeds at least.

Yeah undoubtedly they will improve that to reach a satisfactory level. See their web-browser, it was ready in time and praised for its quickness. Basically, i think it was either you got the features in this update available day 1 but not totally optimized yet, either you would have waited longer for it but with a faster use.

So the teardowns have already started it seems, how long until we know (roughly) what the rest of the system is capable of?
It really depends on when something finally leaks. Unlike marked RAM chips, you can't just look at a CPU die and say "ah, this has 3 X cores running at Y GHz".
