Didn't the guy behind Rhythm Heaven Fever suggest there won't be another Rhythm Heaven for a while, or maybe not another one at all? I'm thinking it might be some kind of new IP... maybe.

well they made kiki trick most recently. maybe another metroid game, and maybe for the 3ds. and maybe just 2d.

maybe.

Man they really need to put Next Level Games* on a new Mario Strikers game, those are so damn good...

* I am dumb and mistook Intelligent Systems for next level games... However my point remains, even though it's off topic. I love Strikers.

** Also just learned that Next Level Games is responsible for the new Luigi's Mansion, this post has really opened my eyes...

Okay, so we got
1) Nintendo games don't count
and
2) Monster Hunter doesn't count
Can't wait to see what the next third-party success story will be, so we can find out what else shouldn't count!
...
I'm not discrediting it's success - I just wouldn't use it as a barometer of third party sales - since the answer to my somewhat rhetorical question was that MonHun is an exception not a norm.

And as I said above, I don't disagree these other titles may not act as a barometer either due to extenuating circumstances for these titles. But those still seem like poor sales. E.g. ports/rehashes sold better at Vita launch.

I guess the argument can be made that there was no title at Vita launch for consumers to consolidate around like MonHun though.

Nice research. I've sorted them according to units sold (since that's the bottom line in the end). Wii U is 4th on that list, and could easily be 3rd once the rest of the games are in. Suddenly this launch actually looks historically pretty good all told.

This should probably go in the OP too.

It's an old tactic used to dismiss any success the Wii did have in selling games back in 2007-2009. Pociask did a good summary of "the list" from back then a few days ago. Basically, don't go there.

You want to say that we should wait for more data before drawing conclusions, all for it. You want to say that Monster Hunter shouldn't count, but the low-selling games should, then it's just a repeat of the Wii "list" and should be recognized as such. Be careful to make sure you're being straight up in your analysis and not cherry-picking results to support a preconception.

Disingenuous. There were 24 launch titles. More than any other hardware released. That tie ratio is not reflecting the full list of titles.

Wii just couldn't win. If a game fell into the following categories, it wasn't a "real" game.

-Lego games
-Music games
-Star Wars games
-Dance games
-Fitness games
-Resident Evil 4
-Party games
-Sports games
-Japanese games
-Light gun games
-anything Nintendo

There are more major Japanese console third party games not on Wii U than there are on it. This past weekend saw MGSV, and Dark Souls II announced, both of which aren't on Wii U.

An unfair comparison as PS3 has like 6 million units on PS3, but this was the first week:

[PS3] Monster Hunter Freedom 3 HD Ver. <ACT> (Capcom) {2011.08.25} (¥4.800) - 282.960

Not only unfair because of install base but surely people who want a variation of Monster Hunter 3 have plenty of options at this point.

Fine because there were only three releases.

Not fine. There were six launch titles.

Disingenuous. There were 24 launch titles. More than any other hardware released. That tie ratio is not reflecting the full list of titles.

Will wait for confirmation of this list before ringing victory bells.

Why no GBA, just out of curiosity?
These are probably from the numbers we had from mediacreate or famitsu and some of them that didn't sell enough that they didn't chart and we don't know the numbers would be my guess. I also don't think the sales of those other titles will rise so high(especially when the sales are 10k and under) that it will make Wii U's attach ratio look bad. On top of that this tracker doesn't count the DD retail cards and we aren't aware of all launch software totals for Wii U, so it's just as incomplete for Wii U. All this gives is a rough ball park estimate and shows that the Wii U's software sales aren't horrible like others make it out to be.

Take it up with Famitsu, we only over got sales for those top 3.

Trigger happy. The point was to compare like with like, there were also more than 6 Wii U launch games. We already have overall tie ratios upthread anyway, that information's not exactly being hidden.

Why no GBA, just out of curiosity?
I left out GBA and WSC largely because they're so removed in terms of audience and software. Handhelds since have occupied a lot of the same space consoles traditionally had, both audience and software. I could add them though if you like?

Tie Ratios at launch / 3rd-party Tie Ratios at launch (Famitsu numbers)

WiiU - 1.2 / 0.4 (missing sales from bottom 5 games)

DS - 0.9 / 0.1
PSP - 1.0 / 0.6
PS3 - 1.0 / 0.7
Wii - 1.7 / 0.2
Wii w/o Wii Play - 1.2 / 0.2
3DS - 0.9 / 0.7
Vita - 0.9 / 0.6

These are numbers dalthien posted earlier in the thread. These I think look more representative of all titles at launch.

Okay, just to see if the pattern would hold even farther back in time, I went back and added another generation of hardware to the tie ratio chart.

Tie Ratios at launch / 3rd-party Tie Ratios at launch (Famitsu numbers)

WiiU - 1.2 / 0.4 (missing all games below Top 3)

DC - 1.3 / 0.2
PS2 - 0.8 / 0.8
GBA - 1.2 / 0.5
GCN - 1.2 / 0.1
DS - 0.9 / 0.1
PSP - 1.0 / 0.6
PS3 - 1.0 / 0.7
Wii - 1.7 / 0.2
Wii w/o Wii Play - 1.2 / 0.2
3DS - 0.9 / 0.7
Vita - 0.9 / 0.6

Everything is still in a very tight range of 0.8-1.3. (Dreamcast highest at 1.3 and PS2 lowest at 0.8).

I love this typo.

Looking forward to the next 3 months, I didn't even realize how bad the Japanese schedule really was. There is pretty much 0 coming to the system. I don't know if it will go below 10k but its definitely not staying at 20k post holidays.

I think that's more to do with the fact that Nintendo hasn't announced it's Q1 lineup for Japan. At least I believe so since they didn't even discuss dragon quest 7 or monster hunter 4 when discussing their 3DS lineup. They mainly focused on this upcoming holiday.

Well, keep in mind that in Japan, it's not that rare to have only a three-month window (or even less, in some cases) between announcement and release.

In other words, if there aren't more Q1/early Q2 announcements over the next month, something has gone seriously wrong for Nintendo.

But the thing is even if there is a 3 month window, it means the January, February, and March will basically be barren. Even Vita's lineup wasn't that bad. Now of course Wii Fit and Pikmin will be bigger than anything on Vita, but those won't be out for a bit.

I think that's more to do with the fact that Nintendo hasn't announced it's Q1 lineup for Japan. At least I believe so since they didn't even discuss dragon quest 7 or monster hunter 4 when discussing their 3DS lineup. They mainly focused on this upcoming holiday.

I don't know if they think they're insanely clever just acting nonchalantly like nothing is happening, but the complete lack of anything for the horizon just makes things look desperate. I would personally feel much better if their was a Spaceworld event coming up, but it seems way too late for their to be one in January which makes me think they are actually hoping NSMBU, MH, and NL last for months

By next gen console gaming may very well be near death in Japan.

I think nothing has really set the world on fire these past few years in Japan. People were excited for the PS3, but then it cost to much when it launched followed by the games people wanting to play being non-existent. The Wii came along and it did well, but no one was really making the big games for it. I figured Atlus would go with Persona on it or something to that effect, but that just didn't happen. So many devs seemed like they didn't know where to go so they ended up going mobile since it was easy to decide where to put games.

If there had been a clear choice for all game devs to flock to, console gaming would have been in better shape. I think the next system that can get pretty much all the big games like the PS2 will revitalize the Japanese market. Just seems to me that they'd rather there be one clear winner and just go with that (for the most part). Unfortunately for the Wii, the hardware issue meant they couldn't capitalize on it when so many of the devs wanted to go HD.

Found 2 of the 3 missing PSP figures! Adding some others too, missing 1 DC game and N64 hardware also.

Highest output of any Nintendo stuido in the last year or so, iirc.

Which just makes me lament how few games Nintendo EAD is putting out (or rather games I'd like to play I suppose). I definitely miss the SNES days in that regard.

Think this needs a new thread? Famitsu posted numbers for the first 2 days of sales and Wii U's top 3 software.

Wii U - 308,570
NSMBU - 170,563
MH3G HD Ver. - 110,149
Nintendo Land - 78,461

Now that we have confirmed numbers and comparisons that can only favor Wii U, definitely a solid launch.

Doesn't means much with only W101 and Pikmin for the next few months. I don't think we will see numbers as low as Vita though.

I still say those numbers aren't that great

Nintendo has got an uphill battle or at least... trying to stay at level ground

Wow, the numbers actually went up with the Famitsu figures. Nintendo Land with a significant jump.

What do you base that on, when the numbers show that it's clearly one of the most successful Japanese launches in the last 12 years? It doesn't have the hysteria that the Wii or PS2 did, but neither did anything else.

Looking at that list again, only 3 games have outsold NSMBU at launch: Wii Sports, Wii Play (and those two only just barely), and Ridge Racer V, all three of which were on systems that had a much larger install base.

3rd best opening for home consoles after 1999 is pretty good considering the state of the home console market in Japan. The real test imo is 2nd quarter 2013.

With these new numbers, the WiiU now has a tie ratio of 1.2 just from these 3 titles alone. The rest of the software should push the tie ratio up a bit more and probably push it past the Dreamcast for the best tie ratio of any hardware going back to the PS1/Sat/N64 generation. Seriously, these are historically very strong software sales for a Japanese launch.

Plus digital: I feel it's very important to take digital purchases into account when referring to the launch of modern consoles and its tech savvy early adopting users.

Those are good number i dont know how anyone can say otherwise with the facts to back them up as being good. The real test is early next year as we saw with the vita a strong launch isnt any indication of how its going to fare over time.

Can I take a gamble on the digital numbers and say those discrepancies in the leak and Famitsu numbers account for digital sales.

Somebody tell Iwata on twitter to break out the nihonshu.
