Eurogamer/CVG Rumor: Sony to have new controller for PS4; CVG: PS4 unveiling in weeks

Is it crazy to hope that Sony will allow the DualShock3 to still register on the PS4 (simple bluetooth stuff, yeah?), thus giving us a choice between both controllers? The new controller will come packaged with the system, so what's to loose by offering BC?

I like the idea of choice and experimenting with both controllers for different games.

I don't think it's crazy to expect it at all. The PS4 will certainly have BT capability, so they would deliberately have to block DS3s.

Can any large-handed people who find DualShock comfortable post pictures of how you hold it? It's beyond me.

Sure. First picture will be thumbsticks in normal position, and the second is the thumbsticks pressed all the way towards each other.

This actually completely killed my next gen Sony hype. Nintendo lost me with the Wii and if Sony goes the gimmick route I'm done with them too.

I wouldn't panic like that. I agree that the Wii-mote focus was bleh, but I doubt Sony will go down that road. If tthat was the case, they would've pushed Move a lot harder.

Ha ha. So we've reached this stage of the ds v x360 pad debate.

I have a feeling the ergonomic design of the x360 makes people who find it comfortable resort to making up for everything else that is not so good in the pad.

Rechargeable batteries, crappy d-pad, crappy buttons quality overall; and heck somehow even the asymmetric design is inherently better somehow.

I like the rationalisation that the dpad and right analogue should be switched because the games that require the dpad have been relegated below dual analog games (namely fps/tps) popularity wise. By that logic, why hasn't the face buttons changed position too? Surely the same applies with the other more important analogue stick: the look/aim one?

It makes no real sense to have one hand top left, the other bottom right. But I guess, make people feel comfortable, and everything else falls into place.

In my opinion, the x360 control pad is inferior for

driving games
fighting games
shmups
And I guess anything that requires keyboard and mouse.

Though to be fair, the x360 pad is now seemingly the default control pad scheme on the pc, and that's a decent achievement. And so people keep saying it's a perfect controller. Love or hate the DS, but x360 controller is here to stay.

Ok, just don't change the analog sticks. My thumbs default to those spots and its very comfortable.
If they really are sticking a screen on there, they might need to move them out of the way as was necessary with the Wii U Gamepad.

Sony Difference (TM)
I think Nintendo will be furious if it turned out that Sony has a similar pad.
For a short while it was thought it would be trouble when we saw that Sony had put motion controls into its PS3 controller; but the price announcement a few minutes later bounced things back.

Really it would make for an interesting situation. From a processing hardware point of view PlayStation/Xbox multiplatform games would work best, but from a control standpoint PlayStation/Wii ones might.

I so hope we still have a normal controller ..No damn display/screen or splitting or motion shit.

Have you used a Wii U GamePad at all? I imagine you haven't because it's a very competent controller for standard games with the additional features of a touch screen. Sony going that route would not be silly from a pure feature standpoint. Cost however is another thing. It will increase cost so something will have to give. Retail price, losses Sony take or raw specs.

As A Wii U owner if they do a touchscreen controller that can only increase chances of ports from Orbis.

Good, I don't have much of a problem with the DS but it really is due for a redesign. I just hope this new controller isn't just a Dual Shock with a screen slapped on top and biometric stuff on the handles. :p

So, I'm going to be out around $100 when/if I drop the controller and it breaks? If a DS is $50, there's no way a controller with a touchscreen from Sony will be cheap.

Underside, please. My point of confusion is what the hell you're doing with your fingers; some people claim that you should use them to lightly support the silly undersized handles, but some people claim to just wrap their fingers around and try to grip the thing? I dunno.

Hopefully it is true. dualshock is terrible due to small handles, bad triggers and loose analogs.

....the dualshock offers way more precision than any other controller imo. They are a touch loose though. If Sony can firm them up while keeping the precision, then great.

Welcome to the world of Wii U owners. Look after it like it's your child.

It is fine while using the L1/R1 buttons. It's when you have to use the triggers that the grip becomes awkward.

They never released the superior 360 controller over here - we just got the standard less-good-than-DS3 one.

Or, you know, maybe controller preference is subjective and anyone who thinks otherwise can fuck off.
The fuck? I would hope that we're intelligent enough to know that someone is sharing their own opinion and don't have to put "IN MY OPINION" in every one of their posts.

Although, I bet that the 360 controller would win hands down in an objective, controlled ergonomics test. Too bad we have no way of really finding out.

Given their financial position, I don't think Sony is in a mood to make big gambles on their controller, when the dual shock has been great for over a decade.

Dual Shock is garbage but I think they should do a new controller and then maybe offer the DS in some special shop or released in smaller quantities the way Nintendo does it with their classic controllers if possible.

If I had to throw my hat in the ring with a crazy guess I'd probably say they'll go with pretty much a mini Vita for a controller, though I'd much rather they stick with a more comfortable DualShock type affair - with no touchscreen shenanigans.

I've no idea what Sony have in mind, but tbh CVG don't either. They are garbage who print anything. They were a damn good magazine read in the late 80's right through to towards the end of the PS1 era. Now? A crappy website that runs any old crap hype and rumour style articles from elsewhere ('teh PS4 has more graphics than 720') and then runs weekly right-on editorials decrying gamers for getting swept up in hype and rumours.

I dislike Wii U more than the original Wii.

The controller is grotesque. Like I said, Sony goes that route I wont follow.

The controller doesn't need to look like PS Vita, WiiU Pad or an iPad nor does it need to be used the same way as either of them. Navigating the OS will be miles better with the touchscreen and typing on a software keyboard will be miles better than using DPad or an external keyboard accessory.

Hoping the touchscreen is true, that way I wouldnt need to use a keyboard or controller add-on for texting and messaging.

colliding thumbs? wut? I have big hands and i hate the DualShock but you are obviously holding it wrong

If you're strafing to the right and turning to the left your thumbs will collide (if you're using the pads of your thumb and not just the tip).

Middle fingers are just resting on the back, and the other fingers are lightly gripping the grips.

yessssss. i enjoy the touchscreen capability on my wii u. it really seems like a necessary next step for traditional controllers. it doesn't have to be big either.

i am very excited! i always wished we had gotten the boomerang controller. as long as it retains the same capabilities as a dualshock 3 for backwards compatibility (ahem, nintendo!), then this is fine by me.

The precision is bad due to it moving so easily. on xbox you have more control due to it being tighter. Also the analogs are concave.

I would be fine with a "screened" controller. But I would like to see an official prototype before I universally declare it "a great feature".

There's more than enough room for them to fuck it up, and I'm the skeptical type.

I really hope both controllers have the sticks up top. But I'm worried Sony cares more about how the controller looks than how it feels.

My insider said touchpad, not lcd screen in the other thread. Makes more sense and reduces costs. I don't think Sony is sold on having two screens for the user to focus on.
By the way the offset sticks on the 360 controller are not ergonomically right. They either need to be level, or the controller itself needs to be asymmetrical with a longer grip on the right side.

Dualshock is superior. It allows for "claw" when playing games. Playing any FPS? Need to push D pad but still want to keep thumbs on sticks? BAM CLAW!

Can't do that with 360 controller.

Thank god. Get rid of that god-awful DS design. I'm still hoping they go for the split controller, but anything is better over what they have now. Also, take the dpads off the millions of unsold Vitas and put them to good use.

Dreamcast was so far ahead of its time, its taken more than 10 years for all consoles to catch up with its VMU concept.

RIP Dreamcast ;_;
