NeoGAF Games of the Year 2012 Awards

I'm not saying the whole year was shit, I'm saying the high profile AAA games didn't deliver like years past.

I agree with this.

If you asked me at this point last year what I thought the best games of 2012 would be (ignoring when some games were actually announced and delays), I would have guessed Mass Effect 3 and Assassin's Creed 3 and I was massively disappointed by both those games.

It was disallowed, I checked my ballot. I don't think they have declared it as an official release yet even though as of update 1.17 it is definitely a proper game, just not official "released" Minecraft went through a similar, "does count, doesn't count" dilemma.

I guess that's what you get when you only have 1 game on your GoTY list.

Some of this year's hyped up/big budget releases:

Mass Effect 3
Halo 4
Assassin's Creed III
Diablo III
Resident Evil 6

Yeah, that's a controversial, disappointing bunch there : /

Oh. Some of the games I really liked from this year didn't show up at all or got zero points. I guess that will teach me not to vote but I feel weird doing it so early before I've played a bunch of stuff. Looking at these lists make my tastes feel increasingly esoteric. The "Adventure Game of the Year" category in particular is a real bummer.

This year was a welcome paradigm shift.

Yes, many of the big AAA titles and sequels did not deliver like I hoped.

But it forced me to go out looking for replacement experiences, and I ended up with some amazing new IPs and very innovative indie titles that this industry has sorely needed for years.

This has been one of the most refreshing gaming years in a long time.

Yeah, if I had to make a list of the top 10 biggest hyped games it'd be something like

Mass Effect 3
Halo 4
Assassin's Creed III
Diablo III
Max Payne 3
Hitman Absolution
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Resident Evil 6
Borderlands 2
Far Cry 3

The fact that none of those made the top 5, and three out of the top 5 are completely new IP...yeah.

A lot of games got pushed to 2013, too. Probably for the better.

Indeed, all the major games disappointed me last year.

My list was almost all handheld games and indie games, never thought that would be the case.

I only recognize the nicknames of 3 people on my affinity list this year, that's unusual. Really happy about the relatively high placement of Dishonored, VLR and Gravity Rush.

I tend to enjoy platformers and RPGs, and 2012 wasn't a sterling year for either. Now that I think about it, my list had a lot more genre diversity than usual:

1) FPS
2) Roguelike/Sim
3) Platformer/Stealth
4) Point and Click Adventure
5) Strategy
6) Point and Click Adventure (although dialogue trees are the central mechanic)
7) Puzzle
8) Whatever the hell genre Dikembe Mutombo would be
9) Platformer
10) Murder Puzzle Simulator?

2012 pushed me out of my comfort zone to find good games, for better or worse
This somewhat happened to me? I don't play that many PC games anymore, and I used to be really into the point and click genre in the past, but this year ended up pushing me back into that direction. My list, for example..

1) Adventure / VN
2) RTS/TRPG
3) ARPG
4) Platformer
5) Point and Click Adventure
6) Touch Rhythm
7) Rhythm Platformer
8) Cover/melee-based ARPG
9) Genre Diversity (platform, shmup, bullet-hell shmup, something, I dunno)
10) Visual Novel

Now when you compare that to my 2011 list or a 2010 list I have filed away, this list is just downright weird and out-of-bounds for me since I stick to RPGs and Platformers for the most part.

I did complain endlessly in other threads that I didn't have a game of the year, which is still somewhat true; my listing for VLR just happened for the sake of numbering as it was the game I liked the most, but not enough for GotY. It was simply a weird year overall, with games that didn't stand stand head and shoulders taller than the other stuff this year for me.

A lot of the major stuff ended up being disappointing for me as well (Assassin's Creed 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, etc.).

The combination of my usual favorite genres mostly disappointing/big AAA games lacking forced me to get out of my comfort zone a bit, and I actually really like my list. Fighters, big dumb shooters, shooters that criticize said dumb shooters, adventure games, stealth, platformers, whatever the fuck Journey is, a shmup...hell, I almost got Sonic Transformed in there. I like my list.

It's absolutely bonkers to me that it's not more popular on GAF.

I suppose its relatively late release and the lack of media coverage would heavily contribute to that. I didn't pick it up until the Steam sale and have yet to clock a lot of hours in it.

But damn, what a really great multiplayer game. I know it didn't have a chance for the top ten... but still some love over nothing would have been nice.

This yeah has been completely awful for games. Outside of Hotline Miami, CounterStrike Global Offensive, and Day Z, I can't think of anything that really interested me. I guess New Super Mario Bros. 2 was pretty good. Hell even if I had unlimited cash I probably would only be interested in buying Dishonored, Xenoblade, and Virtue's Last Reward.

And for how much scorn ME3's ending spurned and how some of us like myself were disappointed with the game beyond the ending itself... it just BARELY missed that top 5, and I think I seriously would prefer it over the other big hyped up AAA games of last year anyway. It may say something that the game everyone blew up about to the point it was actually catching headlines at more mainstream news places is STILL preferable to the other AAA alternatives.

So glad that XCOM got what it deserved. It's definitely my GotY (at least over The Walking Dead; I didn't get to play Journey so I can't judge it's superiority to that) and I'm glad that for once I decide on a GotY that people seem to agree with

Yeah, half of my list either wouldn't be tried out unless I was jonesin' for a new game or would've been pushed down out of the top ten under stronger competition.

This year feels like old ecosystems are falling away but the new ones haven't grown up around us yet. I mean, previous transition years (1995, 2000, 2005) were in the face of many new consoles and the earlier consoles pentultimate efforts, and that hasn't fully happened yet, and that transition may be err...transitioning into something completely new and unfamiliar.

This year will be wierd though, I'll risk guarenteeing that, even if it's just a new normal that's freaky to our current selves.

I agree. Don't think we can really go back, either - feels like the playing field has been leveled between the big players and the little guys. Next gen will be flashy, but a Kentucky Route Zero or Antichamber will get their due if they deliver just as much as any blockbuster franchise. Great time for the medium.

Thanks very much to timetokill, Cheesemeister, Nert and GhaleonQ for their great work with the end of the year polling stuff. So many stats!

I expect Pikmin 3 to be elevated to GOTY status by starved WiiU owners most likely, much in the same way Kid Icarus appears to have been. We can name it "The Xenoblade Effect".

pikmin 2 was ead's best game between majora's mask and twilight princess. it's the uncharted 2 of the franchise if you will. pikmin 3 has the ability to be legit awesome.

Kind of sad that NSMBU didn't even chart. I know not a lot of people have Wii Us or are burned out of Mario platformers, but it's easily the best Mario game since Galaxy 1.

Oh my, my comment was chosen to be listed with Journey. *blush*

Anyway, here is how my list stacks up to GAF:

1. Journey (GAF rank: 1)
2. Sword & Sworcery (GAF rank: 94)
3. Sound Shapes (GAF rank: 40)
4. Tokyo Jungle (GAF rank: 35)
5. Botanicula (GAF rank: 79)
6. VLR (GAF rank: 12)
7. Resonance (GAF rank: 157)
8. They Bleed Pixels (GAF rank: 194)
9. PSO2 (GAF rank: 134)
10. The Secret World (GAF rank: 107)

Not too many surprises. I went very indie this year, so it was a bit of an odd year for me. I couldn't vote for many JRPGs like I have in other years. Many titles (Tales of Graces, The Last Story, Xenoblade) were ones I had played and voted for in years past. Importing has become prohibitively expensive for me with my current budget (and along with certain handhelds being region locked) that has caused me to miss out on many new games coming out in Japan. Still, I am happy with my list (even if GAF doesn't agree with me! :O)

Affinity list:

1. raziel (70)
2. Black Duke (66)
3. Goldmund (64)
4. LiquidSolid (63)
4. Toki767 (63)
6. goldensnake (62)
7. conman (61)
7. swoon (61)
9. nny (59)
10. Gigglepoo (58)

I kind of recognize some of your names? I'm sure you're all very nice.

The list of winners makes me happy. 6 of the games I chose made the top 10. Especially pleased to see Hotline Miami break into the top 10 and for Dark Souls to get the 2011 vote.

My affinity bros...
1. Lingitiz (128)
1. SalsaShark (128)
3. sixghost (119)
4. Maccas (114)
5. Mooreberg (110)
6. Dyni Crippler (108)
7. MegaKungFuRadio (107)

9. Xater (105)
10. JAY the BIRD (102)

It's nowhere near 3D Land. And even among the NSMB games, I probably enjoyed NSMBWii more.

SSX deserved to be shunned.

There was questionable decisions in terms of track design and some of the deadly descents but I disagree; it's a fun game. Probably put more than 100 hours into its online modes.

And the post release support was amazing. Fun game.

Max Payne 3 and Akai Katana Shin in the same category lol. Forgot how silly genres can be in this.

For me, 2012 was a great year. Lots of quality titles.

I'll continue to disregard what a "community" thinks. Like any sane person does.

Code:
Riposte
	1. Tain (66)
	2. Semblance (62)
	3. Dambrosi (55)
	4. Augemitbutter (50)
	5. Codeblue (48)
	6. Burning Justice (47)
	7. Clairvoyance (44)
	7. DarkLordMalik (44)
	9. BubblegumCrisis (41)
	9. Sojgat (41)

hmm, can't say the top 3 surprises me. If Riposte->Tain is 66 and Tain->Riposte is 65, what does that mean?

EDIT: I agree with Duckroll in saying "Stealth" is not a genre. You can also add: "RPG", horror, and survival.

I feel like I almost defaulted onto your affinity list since you had such a diverse group in your top ten.

Are we forgetting the first eight worlds of 3D Land?

There's no doubt that NSMBU requires more precision than 3DL's first half (or second half, really), but I don't really find either game to be particularly engaging.

There's probably about a half-dozen levels in U that really stick out in my mind as being solid or novel. I do think that the challenge mode is a neat addition, but in terms of the single-player campaign, there's not much going on... and the ongoing issues with the audio continue to drag the sub-series down for me. The visual presentation is weak too--yes, it's clean, yes the Van Gogh levels are beautiful and the backgrounds are strong, but everything in the foreground is just so sterile. Miiverse, meh, take it or leave it. It's neat, but holy shit does it ever want you to spam your friends. At first I was frustrated with GAFfers spamming my feed, then I realized I was spamming theirs, unintentionally. Ugh.

I will say that the world map, and the associated new emphasis on hidden exits, is a definite improvement over the recent Mario games.

I 5*'d NSMBU, but I don't think it would have made my top 20 of last year.

Are we forgetting the first eight worlds of 3D Land?

Which are already addicting as fuck? Blasted through them again the past two days, when I actually just wanted to check a detail in the game for a second. Meanwhile, NSMBU doesn't get really good until World 5.
