NeoGAF 2012 Anime of the Year Results Thread

This is handy. I will give some these a try.

The only show I am watching at the moments is Eureka Seven AO which I am slowly working my way through.

Hmmmm.....it didn't make the Top 10 I see......where is it....no, not the Top 50.....what is this.....?

Number 100?!

So basically I am watching crap anime.....

I think I was the only one that really liked it, though unfortunately most of the people hold views contrary to mine. I think fans of E7 felt betrayed by the story and direction of AO so that would explain why it failed to reach broad appeal here.

Fate Zero not #1 is traitorous!! WHAT WERE YOU GUYS THINKING!?!??!

Well... I've never even heard of the top 13 animes. I'm a big anime fan so this is kinda embarrassing. Serves me right for mostly focusing on shonen jump manga/anime. I still think One Piece is one of the best animes ever made. Oh well.

The anime is shitty, read the manga!

I'll admit for being superficial but none of those looked appealing because of the art style (except for Space Bros), and I only know one anime (Kids on the Slope), but upon reading I might watch Hyouka, Space Brothers, and that sci-fi anime From the New World that Branduil calls mature.

Is Hyouka well-written slice-of-life? I liked slice-of-life stuff like Usagi Drop and Beck. The only comedy slice-of-life I liked was Azumanga Daioh.

Is there any psychological thriller like Welcome to NHK or Paranoia Agent currently?

How did From the New World get so high? :lol

I blame Branduil.

Have you watched F/Z? You really should.

Clearly Hyouka is the Journey of anime.

I resent that!

Hyouka? Really?

Christ.

Yeah its a travesty.

Boo, Hyouka was boring.

I've found that a lot of people place massive worth into big production values and pretty images (probably not the case here but sometimes it's even at the expense of everything else) so it's really not surprising that it made it so high in many people's lists. Unfortunate, perhaps, but also unsurprising.

Personally, while my issues with the material are well documented in the anime thread there is simply no denying that Hyouka was the most stunningly beautiful TV anime produced in 2012 so it seemed remiss of me to not acknowledge that fact with a spot in the list even if in my opinion the actual entertainment value of the show is pretty damn poor overall.

Joshiraku was robbed.

I think a number of people were deterred by some of the pun-heavy segments and consequently didn't finish the series but yes, it's a shame that it didn't get more love considering how great some of the gags are.

I think even some of Hyouka's fans (beside firehawk12) can admit that it could be boring and dull in places but that it was still very strong overall. Even Fate/Zero had a really dull first episode!

It was the dullest.

At least Hyouka had SAKUGA.

Probably one of the best written high school based slice-of-life anime I've ever watched. I'd give it a few episodes to see if its your cup of tea because as much as I liked it, it took some time for it to grow on me. It's worth checking out for the visuals alone at least.

Is there any psychological thriller like Welcome to NHK or Paranoia Agent currently?

I'd say From the New World might fit that bill pretty nicely.

Hate to dredge up the old Hyouka arguments again, but it probably had the best writing of any show last year, as well. It wasn't just because of the 'production values'; otherwise Nichijou would have fared better in whatever AOTY it belonged to.

Yea I disagree on that. F/Z trumped it in the writing department pretty clearly but they're also different genres as well.

Now I have to watch it.

You did a good job selling this anime.

So when does Hyouka become good? I can't even remember when I stopped watching it because every episode was about nothing.

It reminds me a lot of Mass Effect 3.

Skip to episode 12. If the school festival doesn't do anything then don't bother. A large part of the show is about nothing.

While Hyouka is good slice of life, I think the hook of the show is basically taking the classic detective character lead and putting him into high school in a (mostly) realistic manner.

I find this interesting if only because I couldn't care less about sakuga when it comes to anime and the animation is a small, small part of why I like Hoyuka.

Fate/Zero had very good writing as well, although it was lacking in one rather pivotal scene towards the end. That seems to be the editing at fault, to be fair, but that editing does create a hole in the writing.

The Hyouka finale wasn't exactly praised for its conclusiveness.

I know I flipped a table.

Yea I felt that was truncated too but it does so much right. I mean it balanced a huge cast and actually utilized it. That's something that is truly rare and should be commended.
