VGLeaks: First look as Durango XDK (always connected, kinect required, must install)

Really interesting quote from bkilian on B3D.

Seems to imply that the MS strategy is along the lines of what has been expected: mass appeal, strong 3rd party support, and kinect. Microsoft will still have Its staple IPs and some new IPs. Looks like this generation will be about approach and services.

Either that or MS could be pulling a fast one on us.

They are setting the bar low for next gen.

I said that multiple times : MS went with different power options - they had yet to chose which one they mass produce.

So you're saying the devs are making games for different Durango architectures? Do you know how that sounds for a system launching this year?

Well, if they were expecting it, does that mean they change part or are they going to stay with the "rumored" specs?

Obviously I'm speculating but I'd say that if MS expected Sony to beat then in raw performance they prepared to counter then not by upping specs, but by offering better features, support, etc.

I seriously believe this is good news. If Sony didn't surprise MS with their specs MS is probably prepared to counter it in some way they deem more interesting to consumers.

How? The rumored design is not very flexible, which means they would have to develop several, very different chips - how is this feasible economically? To me it seems they have planed their strategy quite some time ago.

And lets not forget there was this tweet from a 343 Industries employee recently:

Very interesting, sound like MS let Sony have it, and go to different way.

Pretty much this.

They are keeping their cards really close to the chest. I think we will all be surprised when MS finally unveils, but I'm not talking about power.

That's my guess as well.

That could be interpreted as a joke as well. He exchanges tweets with Payton pretty often.

Well, then I don't get this "joke". The original tweet on which he replied could have been meant either way, serious or "funny", and he made another tweet were he repeated this but named the Xbox first instead of the Playstation, as if he wanted to make sure that this was supposed to be funny:

And I guess Scott Walker probably thought it was serious.

So it seems Durango GAF is on a triple split.

What will it be?

Aye, I think we will see some surprise from MS. We do know they do love money-hatting, not just games but any services.

I don't have time to read over 29 pages of discussion... Essentially, does this leak indicate that MS is letting Sony have the graphic powerhouse card by miles? If so, PS4 will be my only console this gen.

Edit: wait, are specs even leaked? Also always on always connected? No thnx.

For the record, I don't think the specs will be low as much as I believe that services and Kinect features will be the major "selling point" of the system.

Nope - not for a different architecture. And basically devs always make games for the wrong architecture in the beginning of a new console gen as alpha devkits a pretty much just PCs.

Well I think there are some people believe there will be 2 systems, one is ARM, and other is AMD one.

I don't believe that but I could be either SpecsWon't/WillChange.

Durango has always been services and games focused. They've never once tried to hide that. Look at their hires. And if they once again set the bar much higher than Sony out of the gate, Sony will be forced to play catch-up all gen again. Consumers aren't going to flock to power/ram. They're going to be attracted to options/services/convenience. If, however, they go lower power and their services are on par with Sony, they're going to get roasted.

Well, if you consider Paul Thurrot a legitimate insider, and I personally do, the Yukon design was not dropped until last year.

That would signal that there must be competing projects. So the possibility does exist that Microsoft does have competing projects and has not officially chosen the rtm console yet.

but again, comes down if you consider Thurrot legitimate.

It depends on what team you play for. Currently the thought process is

1. Durango specs that were leaked were a fake out to fool Sony.

2. Durango is using a dual APU design.

3. PS4 is more powerful

4. MS has dumped all known specs and will unveil something COMPLETELY different and more powerful than any of us could imagine (think raytracing chips), because trendz show us that MS has never used midranged GPUs and always use GPUs a generation ahead of what's on the market.

I think the general feeling is that the PS4 will be slightly stronger than the next xbox, however, Microsoft rumors seem to point to some quirky things that could point to them trying a lot of different things.

We are far past that point right now. MS is assumed to be coming out first, so they must be further along in the hardware development (complete) and manufacturing (starting now). I would assume the beta kits to be near final hardware.

If not, say hello to the 720 in 2014.

I still don't see how Walker's tweet can be interpreted as serious.

:/

I want Microsoft to just announce something so we can just start really understanding what we will have. I believe nothing is concrete until Microsoft says anything.

Really interesting quote from bkilian on B3D.

he has been saying that for awhile. he has also talked more about competing on price instead of power, so yeah

eg (from early feb):
I have no idea. I guess they would have to be prepared for something like this if they knew beforehand that their spec would be lower than PS4. (Actually, I know exactly what the management response was when questioned about relative console power - and other non-leaked things that may have significant impact on the sales of consoles, but it's not my place to say. Let's just say that I got flashbacks to my days in a different, less successful, org in some meetings.)

I'm personally convinced the above is referring to always-online btw

I hope MS doesn't lean too far to the service side. I get that the #s over the last couple of years show how big Netflix is on it, etc... But a lot of the people using these services had already owned a 360 for the games. The apps/services were a nice addition that kept it going. I think they'll be overestimating their popularity if their gameplan from the start is something similar to what the last couple of years have been for the 360. While I enjoy these additional features/experiences now, they wouldn't have been enough to get me onboard originally.

The reveal can't happen soon enough.

Xbox Core -
Just a pure gaming system without any of the 'New World Order' shite and without all the Facebook and Twitter shite that hardly anyone cares about.

Xbox World -
Has all the gaming tech of the Core console but with all the extra shite in it.

Why can't Microsoft do something like this and release 2 different versions that will suit everyones needs?, they won't because they know the Core gaming model will sell far more than the Illuminati model.

Services, services, services

I have a post history that's freely explorable

So let me get this straight...

A 1.2TFLOP console.
A medium upgrade to Kinect in power
A bunch of *new* services for the masses

And people are supposed to flock to Durango?
