Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

There is no 3rd console curse.
true, their is no such thing as a curse. Some bad moves maybe, but too early to tell if this is a bad move or not. We are definitely moving to a always connected world.
It also seems MS is willing to lose in certain areas of the world for some reason, we will see why soon.

And when that happens what will your thoughts be?

ill wait and see. wait for exclusives or other new services and then finally ill buy the same console that my friends are buying. which will most likely be the one that plays halo. you can guess which one that is.

Yeah, so he's pretty insensitive about life in general, lol. Horrible analogies, terrible idea in general.

The metaphor doesn't work because there are no real vacuum alternatives--no, dusting by hand doesn't count--that don't require electricity and there are no cell phones that magically work in areas with no reception (and if there were, everyone living in those areas would buy those phones instead of the ones that are spotty)

So, uh...

The real reason is that vacuum cleaners require power to work and cell phones require connection to function whereas games do not need internet to function as designed.

Fucking self-involved elitist twat. Great rep for MS you hired there, guys, being antagonistic with developers will really take you places.

If the claims of MS making Durango an entertainment hub, I'm sure as shit that what developers as a whole really think doesn't matter. They're probably more concerned on getting other realms of entertainment and hooking that as the epicenter to their product, as games will surely suffer from this decision.

So if this were to be true, then the MS Xbox servers would have to have a 100% up-time, correct? (no maintenance or blackouts)

Rural areas no longer get the Internet? Damn. Didn't know that.
Some don't, or at the very least they get slow and unreliable internet.
the sooner microsoft leaves video games, the better.

This is an asinine stance to take when you consider the innovations and pushes Microsoft has brought to console gaming. Do you think PSN would be as good as it is now if Microsoft never released the XBOX?

If a next-gen console has an always-online requirement and its competitor doesn't, I can't imagine favoring the former when buying a game.

Indeed friend...

Why would anyone buy a multi plat game that has an online only restriction when the other version doesn't?

I still can't believe they would do this considering online penetration around the world still isn't at the point I would think it should be. For me personally though I agree with his "electricity will go out, I won't buy a TV" point. That is the reasoning that will cause me to purchase a 720 despite all this. It's not good reasoning for everyone though. If your internet going out is an issue then you have every right to say fuck this console. It almost certainly means when I have a choice between a PS4 and 720 version of a game I will be getting the PS4 unless there are some crazy exclusive features. I'm amazed he would even talk about this right now though.

This might be the first time the overall voice of gamers here is against Xbox. Sony got it bad in PS3 reveal, and Nintendo took the wrath towards end of Wii and now with Wii U. It's interesting to see Micrsoft get shit on for once.

The majority of people simply aren't going to care - most 360 owners already have Live and are online. Gripe and moan all you want, but the guy has a point. Now me, the PS3 is online and the XBox isn't simply because it doesn't have a wireless adaptor, and I'm not paying the scratch for one.

My choice. And always online is real - my home office is connected via the Internet, and if my Internet is down, so is my productivity. Hell, my coworkers were giving me crap for not being able to participate in video conference the first few months because of crappy Internet connection.

The fact is - this isn't going to matter to 95% of 360 owners. MS is prepared to lose the other 5% because they make nothing off of them anyway.

Well, to be fair, he wasnt hired as a rep. Hes a Creative Director and should not speak in behalf of MS, thats not his job.

Sorry I had to. Even though I hold it close to my heart, I think I'll have to play Halo 5 on someone elses machine if this is the case.

What a fucking toolbag. If MS seriously pull an always online console they deserve all the shit coming to them.

they better never have a Simcity level issue

I can't imagine the crazy backlash coming

to be fair my Wii U is always online but I can't imagine not being able to play MonHun because Miiverse is down

Okay, here is the thing GAF....all of you are going to buy xbox when the next Halo comes out. They have probably done their calculations and they are fine with loosing some folks due to always online. They definitely make a lot of money with Xbox live and they want only those people who are going to pay for live and buy stuff online. That is their business model and I am willing to bet it's going to be more successful then Sony's model.

But as a consumer I really like PS4's model, at least what they have shown of it and also I am Playstation guy! But I would wager that come Christmas time, new Xbox out sells PS4 2 to 1, even with all the online crap! (in North America)
Did you play Halo 4? Halo is dead/dying:
The next xbox is going to need more than another Halo game to pike interest.

Wow. Such BS.

Those analogies don't even fucking work. You NEED electricity for a modern vacuum cleaner, you don't NEED internet to play SP games. Do we need network reception to play games on our cellphones? Fucking guy needs to think his arguments out.

people are used to be able to go online with their devices if they want to, not always have to be connected as a requirement to use said service/device.

People are used to needing an internet connection to get the most out of these expensive devices. LIke I said, sure they don't require a connection, but how useful is an iPad to your average consumer if their internet goes out for a few hours? Honestly?

Why would anyone buy a multi plat game that has an online only restriction when the other version doesn't?

Same reason people pay for online play when a competitor doesn't?

Because their friends do it too. Microsoft + always online + 1 month COD or GTA exclusivity? = same shit all over again.

He does say that he wants it to be always online but i'm sure there is more to what he wants going on here, especially comparing it (lol) to a hoover.

Nextbox is going to aim to be a media hub of some kind I can see it, adverts and subs before games.

Water is not wet!
i just asked my ultra-casual sister about this in a roundabout way. She got her son a Wii U for Christmas. i told her about the new update coming out next month that will require on-line to play games offline. Her response "Wtf?"

i live in a fairly connected city and at least a few times a week the internet (and phone because we have a bundle) goes down. FOR HOURS AT A TIME. Some days i get up and the internet is out. i come home from work ten hours later and the internet is still fucking down. More aggravating than that is when it comes and goes intermittently for DAYS AT A TIME. Up for a few minutes, down for ten minutes. Up for a few more, then back down for even longer.

lol, no.

A decent amount of people on GAF have a seriously deranged view of what "most people" care about between this and the BC ordeal. People can deal with their 3G, WiFi connections getting dropped or even going down for a while because they can do other things on them while they go back up.

Guess what happens when they can't do that? They start caring.

I can not believe, especially after Sony's console reveal and it NOT being always online...

and after the Diablo 3 and Sim City disasters...

that Microsoft would go through with an always online console.

If they announce that shit at E3 I guarantee you it will be met with a huge boo from the crowd and a drop in stock.

I'll never defend the imbecile at Microsoft that made these comments, but I don't see always online as anything remotely controversial. Just about everybody is online these days. Most of the people complaining in this thread right now, have a solid and reliable enough internet connection to come online and poke fun at this. In fact, most regular gaf users don't have serious concerns about internet access, so what are we really left with? Much ado about nothing.

The real controversy here isn't that Microsoft is defending always online. The real controversy is the disrespectful and foolish manner by which a Microsoft employee, in representing the company, has chosen to defend an always online console. For those believing this somehow wraps things up for Sony and the PS4 with a nice little bow on top, better think again. Always online will, I repeat, do nothing to significantly harm sales of the next Xbox compared to the PS4. For those emotionally invested in seeing one of the two machines fail, you better start placing your bets on something else, because always online isn't it.

And there it is. Xbox Live has never been that unreliable. Nothing on that level happened to the 360, and nothing on that level will happen on the next Xbox. People really believe that Microsoft won't have all their ducks in a row on this thing? Come on.
