Nintendo 3DS Direct - 17th April - 3 PM UK/10 AM EST

Well, Metroid hasn't had a handheld release in the mainline series since Zero Mission for GBA, right? I think that series is pretty much on the back burner

Zelda is too big to announce in a Direct, they'll save that for E3. Unless they're going all Wii U at E3 and this Direct is supposed to be 3DS's big day in the sun until another Direct in June or July.

You have seen how much Nintendo spits out Kirby titles, haven't you?

I suppose you're right. I never bought any of the DS games! Maybe I should rectify that. I wouldn't think even a semi-big title would be announced at a Nintendo Direct, before Mario and Luigi 4. It's a spinoff sure, but it's still quite a large title. Previous titles in that series had been saved for E3, so who knows.

We haven't had a handheld Metroid since 2006.
We haven't had a handheld Zelda since 2009.

Not saying Kirby isn't imminent, but it's not exactly a huge gap.

I was actually thinking the same thing until I looked up the series. Surprisingly entries aren't that far from each other.

  • 2001 - Tilt & Tumble
  • 2002 - Nightmare in Dream Land
  • 2004 - Amazing Mirror
  • 2005 - Canvas Curse
  • 2006 - Squeak Squad
  • 2008 - Super Star Ultra
  • 2011 - Mass Attack

And that's just the handheld games.

I expect Smash Bros. 3DS to be the big 3DS title at E3 with Pokémon X & Y.

Smash has already been confirmed to be there, with Sakurai claiming we'll see both versions. Pokemon never gets shown off at E3, as long as I can remember anyway. It's because it doesn't need to be.

Yes...you should.

In fairness, the schedules have worked out that the localisation isn't normally in a sufficiently advanced state for a Pokemon game to be showcased at E3, and Nintendo take a hands-off stance with big information reveals.

With the simultaneous worldwide release of X and Y, and the Pokemon Direct, Nintendo might be in a position to show off X and Y at E3. Might.

I doubt nintendo would talk about third party games being localized unless they publish them themselves.

They talked about Etrian Odyssey and it's NISA who is bringing it. Same with VLR. And maybe they're localizing Bravely Default or Fantasy Life themselves.

A 2.5D Metroid title would make me happy.

I'll keep dreaming, though D:

Besides that, HAL hasn't had a release since Return to Dreamland and Mass Attack in 2011, so it would stand to reason that at least their first 3DS game would be in the home stretch of development by now. It's been long enough.

They imply there's more than three unannounced games, and at least three new retail titles.

Iwata said 3DS is getting ten big titles this year, and there are three or four that are still unannounced. I would imagine they're saving one or two of those for E3, though.

That's true enough, I didn't think about that. It would be certainly understandable, it's just a title I don't think they need to push in people's faces.

First I've heard of this. Awesome!

I'm hoping (aside from hopefully Zelda) that we get something unexpected. Return to a forgotten IP?

German Gamingwebsite 4 Players posted this Message on Facebook.

They say, that we are gonna see three new Games.

That's actually not what it says. And I'm not sure why you think it does, considering that you translated the sentence correctly. 4Players is giving away five packages containing three games a piece, but they aren't implying that these three games are as of yet unannounced or the only thing we'll see that day. It could just as well be a bundle with Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing and Donkey Kong, to make one example.

By the way, Nintendo Germany has invited the press to play some games on Thursday. I'd assume that the event is related to the Direct and it wouldn't surprise me if NoA's 3DS event takes place at the end of the week too. Might be an indication that Nintendo is planning to show something we don't know yet about, might be just a boring event to show the press 3DS's known Q2 line-up. Who knows. We'll see.

True, but Sakurai (And at least some of HAL Labs) is working on Smash Bros. I doubt a kirby game is on his priorities at the same time.

Sakurai hasn't worked on a Kirby title for 10 years now. And HAL is a really big studio (comparable to Intelligent Systems); a 3DS Kirby title wouldn't take that many resources. It's time.

Development is entirely at Namco Bandai, though. It's not a massive co-development collaboration with Monolith and HAL this time around, it's Sakurai basically living at Namco Bandai as their supervisor for the game.

And getting the 3DS a Kirby game for the holidays is definitely a priority. 3DS needs all the software it can get.

Spanish retailer Xtralife has listed Majora's Mask for Nintendo 3DS.

Link (in Spanish)

It could be nothing, because they also have listed Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Soul Hackers.

What's curious about it, is that the game doesn't appear on the search and if you click the link it redirects to the main page.

IIRC Xtralife listed Project X Zone just before its announcement for the West.

Shall we be hyped for it?

Noa's press event is just a few hours after Nintendo Direct.

I know this is a 3DS themed Nintendo Direct but do we think they'll announce the WiiU firmware update at the end or something?

Rich at IGN said the NA press event is the same day as the Direct, just a few hours later. So basically they'll be getting the same info we are over the livestream. The difference being, they'll get to actually go play the software afterwards.

I feel like, even if that is true, they won't confirm that until E3.

I don't think I want to see a main Kirby title right now, considering how similar are all of them and how recent is Return to Dreamland. Unless it includes major changes, as Epic Yarn or Power Painbrush, of course.

SSB is confirmed for 3DS. We know next to nothing about it, but we know it's coming.

I will be pissed if they go back on what they've said in the past and release Majora before an original 3D Zelda. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to playing Majora eventually, I just want them to stretch their legs creatively.

Original Zelda title before remake and such.

You should read that sentence again: "jeweils drei der neu angekündigten Spiele [...] (werden zum Release verschickt)" So at least three new retail titles, and more than three announcements overall.

Even better then. Seein both NoA and NoE are co-operating to show their line-ups at pretty much the same time is kinda promising (since that's not really neccessary if all they're doing is showing the Q2 games we already know about it), but as long as NCL doesn't join the Direct train I won't get my hopes up.

Here's hoping.

Same for me, could be big or not.
Nintendo, please announce a JP Direct soon!

All this Kirby talk didn't excite me at first, but then I got thinking, and decided I'd be totally up for a Kirby 3D Land. With co-op multiplayer. Make it happen, Nintendo.

That's what is bugging me. The "new Zelda first" statement.

The plan might have changed since that "new before remake" statement was made. If development on the new game got pushed back or cancelled in favor of the Wii U installment. A MM remake would sell like hotcakes, though. I'd be fine with that.
