Gamestop found out about Microsoft's pre-owned games policy later than we did

When asked about Xbox One's potential second-hand fee, Bartel said the information came "as a surprise" and declined to comment "on speculation."

"All that Microsoft has said so far is that they've designed the Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games," Bartel said. "That's what I'm going with at this point. I think there's additional details they're going to reveal later on."

Retailers have in the past expressed that pre-owned games are the largest source of profit from them. What realistic options do they have now?

Something tells me there will be this interesting partnership between Gamestop that allows you to pre-order a game and get a used game unlock for "free".

No. Then Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Future Shop, etc would get a larger sure of the passed up revenue. It would be suicide for GameStop.

I can only speak for our store - but it would mean that the presence of the console im the store would be much smaller than it would otherwise.

Typically you'd have PS3 Hardware - PS3 New - PS3 Digital - And then 2-3 bays of PS3 pre-owned (such is the profit margin.)

To give you an example - many stores in this shit hole of a business have only one Wii U bay incorporating hardware, digital, new AND pre-owned. It wouldn't quite be that bad because the company is in bed with MS - but its presence would certainly be affected.

We didn't know either

...wait until he finds out that's online...

Wow Microsoft didn't even inform Gamestop? They really screwed Gamestop over... Awful move by Microsoft...

Didn't Gamestop say that majority of their profits come from Newgames though? I don't see them dying this gen.

This is interesting. Every Gamestop I've been has had a huge wall of used Xbox games compared to PS3. Its a little closer to even these days, but it always seemed the used market was bigger on the 360 side.

Really want to see what gamestop does with this new information.
I sure don't see them pushing it as a cover story.

I'm sure Gamestop was super thrilled to read the news today.

Not being put in the loop is pretty much tantamount to them being excluded from any used game cartel MS plans to implement.

I wonder to what degree MS will try to cater to them; they can probably reproduce codes to include in physical copies to "resell" the game. For a price from MS, of course.

But given they didn't inform Gamestop of the limitations in advance....ho boy. Should be fun.

Tough situation for GameStop. Depending on the margins, it's either worth it or not to stock the next Xbox if MS is set on canabalizing your business.

Yeah, there is a lot of room for potential backlash... a lot of retailers have started a tradein program, to throw them all under the bus, and especially without letting them know in advance, could end up biting them on the ass. Especially since new games don't have a huge mark up to begin with.

Wish I could be in that Gamestop head office when they found out. Reaction must have been priceless.

Otherwise, fuck gamestop.

XBO can offer digital renting service completely eliminating the middle man.

Gamestop will not stop selling the console, but their employees might recommend PS4 to those uncertain.

If only we had a camera on the Gamestop CEO as he watched this conference go down.
