Square Enix announces Deus Ex: The Fall for iOS [Up: $7 price, Video Footage]

I love iOS games. There are some good ports to that platform, and the best original games for iOS are very mindful of the fact that it's using a touch screen. In the best iOS titles, the game is built around the possibilities and limitations of the device. In that regard, it's a great platform.

Also, I'm not necessarily opposed to iOS getting spin-off games to franchises I love, like Deus Ex, but I can't see myself enjoying on-screen joysticks in this genre. If there's a free version I'll give it a try, but I'm not paying for any traditional game with shoe-horned touch screen controls without trying it first. I've been burned by traditional games on iOS before and I'm not paying another penny for them.

To me it looks like no fucks were given in regard to what type of game they wanted to make, and/or what platform they were making the game for. The end result is bound to be a mess. Thanks Square.

Looks good. Touch controls, I don't know. Might be a "killer" app for things like the Wikipad and Shield if they can get the right combo of touch and physical controls going.

I'm probably in, since they aren't charging the usual Square-Enix mobile premium.

This would be perfect for the Vita. Sony, time to spend some money.

I don't know why they put out teasers for an iOS game. Even if the game ends up good, I've never seen it do anything but backfire.

I hate any game that involves a dpad or WASD input on a touchscreen. I won't play any game that uses a system like that. It's not fun.

As Square Enix posts a swing to significant losses for the last fiscal year, the company has blamed the "increasingly competitive and oligopolistic" console game markets in North America and Europe, saying that the space is too highly-influenced by a small number of companies.

Fuck this shit. A line has been crossed. Deus Ex is now an iOS game.

Injustica, injustica....

I don't think people are hating on iOS specifically. It's the fact that the game is iOS exclusive. If this was announced multi-platform I don't think there'd be this much of an outcry. That said, SE don't mess up TWEWY2 pls I beg you.

From what I've seen in the video, the gameplay doesn't look horrible but I remain cautious about how the level design will be impacted by being on iOS. They are releasing it on iPhone (iPhone 5 only has ~1GB RAM?). Although, the comparison between x86 and other platforms makes it a bit moot, it still raises questions for me.

I'd play it if the design isn't hampered and there was a way to not use the touchscreen. Touchscreen input doesn't gel well with me. I'm not hating on this game just because it's not on the PC or a console, I'd like to give it a chance because it's still Deus Ex. Eidos Montreal showed us they know what they're doing with the franchise with DXHR, so I'm not shunning it outright.

Still... touchscreens..

Honestly I think this looks great, probably one of the best looking iOS games I've seen.
Can't wait to try it out.

It looks like it might be a decent game, I'd be up for self-contained Deus Ex lite. The thing I wonder about though is, who exactly want to buy these games on iOS? I don't mean people who find touch controls acceptable enough and put up with it in order to play the games, I mean who exactly want to play a Deus Ex on an iPad, but wouldn't want to play it on a console or PC? Is there really such a large market of casual tablet only people who are interested in a game like Deus Ex?

I like tablet and phone games which use the touchscreen controls well, but I just can't abide any game that has virtual twin-sticks and controller buttons on the screen. It's just gross to me. It's like having a console game that has you controlling a mouse cursor with a d-pad (of which there have been quite a few over the years) - it's possible to play, but it's clearly an awkward, inferior option. The only difference is that those games are generally ports of PC games that you can choose to play on whichever platform you want, whereas these mobile games are frequently unavailable on a platform with appropriate controls.

Eh, I'm not going to try and convince you to like stuff you don't like.

I agree it doesn't measure up to the 360 / PS3 library though.

It just isn't worth it to buy for the sole purpose of gaming. I wonder how many people here would buy iOS just for gaming purposes. You claim its a good gaming platform but I have yet to see the evidence even with the thousands of ports/game apps.. I'm not just talking taste here. It has never come further then a fun distraction for me.

I love iOS and I have no problem with devs making more iOS games.

This looks like a pile of shit, it's based on a spinoff novel (transmedia garbage, mass-produced crap), and the only other game it reminds me of is the unbearably shitty Mass Effect 3 Infiltrator game.

If console gaming died off you'd see games like these dry up because they are not suited or built for touch screen. Virtual joysticks are literally simulating (poorly) physical controllers.

I can't play games like these on touch screens. Vita has been getting some decent mobile game ports so I can always hope for that later down the line.

The good news to come out of this is that this plus Thief should pretty much guarantee the next real DX game will be on next gen consoles.

Oh, I dunno about that. You're probably right. I just see it as I'm going to buy a smartphone anyway, it might as well be the one that has all the support from a gamers perspective.

I feel the same about the 3DS and the Wii, it's just personal preference ultimately. If it ain't tickling your testes, move on to something else.

gunmanclive sold multiples better on 3DS than iOS.
A sample size of one probably isn't very reliable.

This is so incredibly disappointing. I've tried to get over the lack of physical control in mobile games by buying a few games recently (both on Play and PSM), but I just can't get over that hump. I'm trying, because I do think there are a lot of good games out there but my brain just doesn't work with without actual joysticks or buttons.

Ugh.

I wasnt really comparing to anything specific but I love my iPhone for other reasons. It baffles me just as much that you can even compare it to Wii or 3DS even if they are shitty.

Final Fantasy XV exclusively on iOS.

there is no way in hell a Final Fantasy game like that would even work properly on a damn cellphone
also they would of wasted time on making an engine for the game then not use it
also whats so damn fascinating about cellphone games

Disappointed and still awaiting the announcement of a next-gen Deus Ex game.

That said, I enjoy the world they've created enough that I'll probably at least give this a shot.

That's cool. It baffles me that people buy the 3DS when the Vita exists. It boggles my mind that the Saturn 'lost' to the Playstation. I can't fathom people preferring the NES over the Master System. I think the important part is accepting that it's a legit gaming platform* and it's going to get exclusive games. Treat them as you would any exclusive on a platform you don't care for: ignore them. Port-begging or bitching about the chosen platform doesn't get anyone anywhere.

*By which I mean iOS / 3DS / Ouya / Xbone... whatever basically.

So, about the game... I do think it's a missed opportunity to just tack on virtual controls in this. Since it's not really a fast paced FPS, I think the control scheme of The Drowning could work really well for Deus EX.

Those controls look like a big improvement, but they still don't seem like they'd work for Deus Ex. The reason is that, at least for stealth playthroughs, careful first-person movement (as opposing to aiming and shooting) is critically important. Virtual sticks are obviously terrible for that, but The Drowning's scheme isn't much better. It seems fine for aiming, for looking around, and for longer-distance movement. But for close-up movement with a need for strafing, variable speeds, and constantly facing a target? I don't see how it'll help at all.

I love touch controlled games on my phone. Mobile gaming has come so far in the last few years and I'd love to see something from the Deus Ex universe on these platforms. However, it looks like they made one of the types of games that I've played a number of examples of that control like shit and are not much fun to play without some buttons. That's what my gripe with this is.
