No, he was simply late in addition. As Scrafty said, Sonic is the one who "replaced" Mewtwo if anything else due to the timing.

And the only "Mewtwo" moveset Lucario has is Aura Sphere, and even then that's like saying Samus is a Mewtwo clone.

Four characters per franchise. It's as simple as this. Lucario didn't replace Mewtwo, but Mewtwo didn't fit at the roster when the more popular and current at the time Lucario was added. You could as well say that Red replaced him, but would that be true? Pokémon Trainer was a unique feature character, while Lucario was essentially Mewtwo's successor as the cool, fighter-esque Pokémon smasher.

Whether or not Lucario will return depends on how big a roster Sakurai wants to make. We do know Sakurai doesn't like cuts and he will hopefully add an additional position for each franchise -- but as it stands, Lucario is the weakest link of the Pokémon roster and the most likely to be replaced.

If anything it's more baffling seeing the smash faithful claim sonic is more likely a replacement. D:

I think you're a bit bitter about Mewtwo's exclusion, which is understandable since you're a fan. However, the fact of the matter is that even when examined side-by-side, all of Mewtwo and Lucario's moves are both functionally and aesthetically different, and since they were being worked on at the same time, Lucario definitely did not "replace" him.

The Sonic argument isn't ironclad, but it's the best one that can be made with the information availalbe (even if it requires a few assumptions). Take a good, hard look at the facts and you'll see it too.

Uhhhh... because watching them they animate extremely similarly? Their normals look similar. Their side smashes (draw back double palm strikes) look similar, their attacks shoot purple fire, up a arcing kick looks like up +a tail whip. both neutral airs have swirly fire effects/energy effects. their fireballs, at first glance, appear extremely similar. They move (floaty) similar, etc. He looks, at first glance to be a fighting as opposed to psychic themed mewtwo.

"A kick is similar to a tail being thrown upwards"... uh... no, it's a completely different animation from Mewtwo. You're really reaching there >_>

I could see Fsmash comparison but the rest of his moves animate differently, work differently, and weren't taken from Mewtwo and then morphed into something else.

Neutral Air for both are not the same. Mewtwo doesn't spin in the air with a single hitbox... he does a single pose like he's charging and electrical multiple hitboxes surround him. Completely different animation and functionality.

Their tilts aren't similar. Mewtwo uses his tail for all of them while Lucario kicks with two and punches with one. They also act differently when they hit someone, again..

Their throws are different, animation, knockback, functionality, placement, etc.

They are not that similar at all lol. Lucario is even heavier than Mewtwo is (in the weight department).

First thing I read... forward smash is the same.

LOL.

Mario and Lucario are "nothing alike"
You, uh, might want to finish the video there, champ. And no, they're not the same. Mario and Captain Falcon both have punches! Clones! Fox and Samus both have kicks! Clones!

Captain Falcon and Gannondorf are totally different.

Fox and Wolf are.... totally different.

Ryu and Ken are Totally Different

Mewtwo's grabs are pure excellence, I really like playing in Melee Remix (fan patch), simple tweaking makes Mewtwo so much better. Hopefully if he gets included in this Smash they do the same.

Er, where did I say anything about them?

Nowhere, but it's nice to see that you're completely missing the point of what I'm trying to say. I can't tell if it's my fault for being a shitty communicator or if I've hit a nerve here or something and everyone is bringing out the pre rehearsed fan opinion to prove me wrong.

I don't doubt that Lucario in his final state "Plays Differently To Mewtwo." What I'm trying to say is that "Lucario appears to have started life as a Mewtwo clone, or an iteration of his design" and seeing as Mewtwo is notably, absent leads to me to believe that they chose to have Lucario in the game over Mewtwo, ie: Mewtwo was replaced. I really don't see why this is such an unreasonable thing to believe, considering we had stuff like Toon Link taking over young Link in the same game, and Wolf, a guy whose moves are very different to fox, but still essentially a clone showing up as well.

He might come back, maybe, but I think Lucario is way more relevant to the pokemon kids of today than Mewtwo is. If anything I wouldn't even want him back if it meant having the two of them in, no matter how great his Psychic shit looks over a unique character.

Melee model looks like a stretched texture map on a generic dog head model.
The mouth is too long, the snout is pointed downwards and the eyes/eyebrows are stretched to the sides of his head. Its one of the wordst renditions in Melee.

Ike was unique, gameplay wise, so i'd like to keep him. Lucina/chrom can replace marth, but it'd be nice if they were exchangeable skins.

Lucario can be replaced by mewthree or whatever he's called, since lucario basically replaced mewtwo.

no just no

I know character talk is fun, but what about items and stages and other stuff? Like I could see a new Pokéball Pokémon being Eevee and every time it comes out it could evolve into one of it's evolutions and then attack differently. Plus it's showing off that new fairy Eevee.

Or for a new stage they could do a Pushmo one where the blocks are shifting and being pushed and all that. That would be cool.

I got Spirit Tracks and Gerudo Valley, I am satisfied.
even better Spirit Tracks stage has one of my favorite Zelda themes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIJozEVHOl4.

I'm not a huge fan of his melee design either, but going with the command look was a definite step down in my eyes too. He's just so... uncanny.

Agreed. RT @CocoaTheBudgie On the topic of Bayonetta, I would love to see her join Super Smash Bros. Jeanne would make a great Assist Trophy (https://twitter.com/PG_kamiya/status/345200078891397120)

Doesn't mean anything thought I'd post though. Usually he just says fuck off smash idiots ask your mom.

Well done. Send this to Sakurai. RT @fermingamboa: I draw this in Miiverse lol pic.twitter.com/gBpCapg3Lz

Ganondorf needs to be even more different.

Overhaul his moveset to incorporate various attacks from the Zelda games, while keeping some his iconic moves from Smash Bros.

Plus one. What would be really sweet would be if he could transform into Pig Ganon, with a different play style.

I was thinking Zoroark might replace em, but 6th gen is launching now...so who knows o_o

Maybe I'm alone in this, but just with Mega Man and Wii Fit Trainer this is already my favorite Smash roster. Anything else is just gravy.

Edit: Also I'd rather see Lucina than Chrom, but either way.

I agree with you up until that last part. Mewtwo is coming back, not Lucario. Mewtwo is in Pokemon X and Y (or at least his new form), and also in the next Pokemon movie. He's far more relevant than Lucario at the moment.

Lucario is out. Make way for gen 6 rep.

I doubt it.

Lucario has garnered alot of popularity. Also pokemn could just have 5 spots.

Like I am sure mario and Legend of zelda are going to.

5th spot will just be new mewtwo.

I vastly prefer the current Fox model over Melee's next-gen-dog model. So much that I tried to use him in Brawl despite not being really a StarFox fan (but failed miserably, his moveset wasn't made for me). Looks especially awesome in his black or blue outfits.

Fun fact: the raw SAI file for the image is 119mb big and attempting to un-resize it after resizing for export as png crashes SAI from using up too much memory. I'm gonna have to upgrade the memory usage size as Sakurai releases more characters.
