Just looking at it and hearing it made me cry
It's basically an early 80s light fantasy adventure that introduces the ponies, their world, and a surprisingly dark villain. I don't think the franchise ever really has one like that again as he comes across as evil-evil more than cartoon-evil. Future villains have much more frivolous goals and a much lighter air to them. There's some songs (including this infamous one) IIRC. Think it's just a two part special at that. Nothing complex, hell, maybe nothing even that special but it's definitely better than what followed.
It's not until the subsequent stuff that the merchandise machine feels like it's in full effect and I wouldn't hesitate to call it a unique outlier of the franchise.

AnimeGAF is a siscon villain with a secret identity on a quest to gain vengeance for its dead parent. MANgaf is obviously the do-gooder hero that the audience doesn't like but will gladly do a yaoi fan pairing of.
The only thing Utena really paints in a positive light is luxury sports cars and not buttoning your shirt.
I might have, but I also might be willing to exaggerate to make a silly point on a fake graph.

The first half of this episode is mostly taken up with the technobabble physics of the setting's version of hyperspace, with its planescapes and anuseon particles. It's fairly stock stuff, as far as this kind of show goes. Some of the shots of the ship and the firing of its engines were nice. The primitive digital effects used in some shots, not as much.
Things got more interesting in the second half, as Lafiel and Jinto discuss the differences between humans and Abh, first in relation to paintings and later in relation reproduction. The Abh seem to have some unusual methods of multiplying themselves...

Yes that is definitely the most romantic thing I have ever heard.
I approve of this dynamic when painted in a Geass light.
And it will never have enough seasons to actually be able to produce an abhorrently awful season.

I feel like George and Chibodee's reasons for fighting are not as legitimate as say, Sai Saici's, Argo's, and Domon's.
I would in fact rank legitimacy as follows: Domon = Argo > Sai > Chibodee >> George.
Domon and Argo are both fighting to free loved ones. You could argue Domon's cause outranking Argo's since Domon is also fighting to stop the Devil Gundam and Argo's friends are all criminals anyway.
Sai Saici is fighting to revive a school that has gone away, which isn't that big a deal, but when you consider that it has to do with his father, too, then it becomes more important.
Chibodee's American Dream thing is pretty nebulous, though. And George fighting for the honor of his nation is just bland, since technically EVERYONE is doing that.

Which would be better if they said that, but all they ever say is "Chibodee's American Dream." Since I kinda got that whole "Helping the folks in the slums" deal, though, it struck me as better than George "Has no reason" de Sand.
Also Chibodee has sex with four women at once and then ejaculates fire everywhere in this episode. There is no other means of interpreting the scene.

Hey AnimeGAF, I'd like your assistance. This year's Anime Expo video rooms are kinda boring and lack a lot of interesting variety (see: no ICE). In lieu of that, I was thinking of preparing an external hard drive full of totally legally acquired weird-ass anime to watch in the hotel room with some of my friends during the time where we'd normally be checking out video rooms. I've already grabbed a few off "the list" like Dark Cat, Mad bull 34, Musashi Gundoh, and Glass Fleet. All those scratch the right itch, but I'm looking for a few more selects. Preferably, nothing that shows up on my MAL. Thanks!

The most obvious one is Garzey's Wing, but from the list I'd also personally recommend The Laws of Eternity, Dracula: Emperor of Darkness, Crystal Triangle, the AB Group dub of the various Dragonball Z movies (if you're interested in the DBZ movies, let me know and I'll PM you with further details because they're virtually impossible to acquire) and Yami if you think you'll have the time for an entire series.
A couple of old OVAs that aren't on the list but I'd still recommend for gag viewing are Ki-Me-Ra (dub) and De:vadasy.
