I see I opened a can of worms. Now I must surely watch it to see what all the fuzz is about.

I feel this will end badly, this is how I happened to start watching Oreimo too...

Change Leafa-chan to Corvy-kun

Should I post the list?

Leafa-Chan may well be the worst character in any anime I've ever watched. My hate for her outstrips my hate for Flit Asuno and Setsuna Fucktard Seiei by a country mile.

You are overthinking this.

Can you blame me? After that Black Rose arc's conclusion I think expecting many things to be absolute lies is only fair.

Crunchyroll also got Rozen Maiden Zurückspulen

They only have three shows on my list :(

Apparently they're announcing 3 more shows tomorrow

6/26 - Recorder and Randsell Mi
6/26 - Teekyu 2
6/26 - Senyu
6/27 - Dog & Scissors
6/27 - Servant x Service
6/27 - Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club
7/1 - Gifu Dodo!! Kanetsugu and Keiji
7/1 - Chronicles of the Going Home Club
7/1 - Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East Season Two
7/2 - Fantasista Doll
7/2 - Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Class C
7/2 - Rozen Maiden Zurückspulen
7/3 - ??
7/3 - ??
7/3 - ??

Still only 3 for me so far as well (Fantasista Doll, Rozen Maiden, and Senyu S2) might check out Gifu Dodo and Hakkenden but neither jumps out at me.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann – Final Impressions

Final Verdict: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is beautiful. It’s another one of my favourites. I would even go as far as to say it’s better than Madoka Magica. Madoka Magica may be one of anime’s supreme world leaders, but Gurren Lagann is a god of anime.
Gurren Lagann is genuinely better than Madoka.

It's a stupid show that's moderately okay for 14 episodes, then they introduce a horrible new character who single handedly ruins the entire rest of the show.

If you do watch it, stop at episode 14 and skip directly to episode 25. The eleven episodes between are really, really, absolutely, unequivocally awful.

It is a crime. but it was actually half of a decent show. I refuse to acknowledge anything past episode 15 though.

Leafa-Chan may well be the worst character in any anime I've ever watched. My hate for her outstrips my hate for Flit Asuno and Setsuna Fucktard Seiei by a country mile.

You people suck. Sugu is a nice character and ALO was a pretty nice arc (even if the anime did cut out one of the best parts of it).

Dammit, guys, you defeated a villain without restoring the relevant fountain in the same episode again. Stop cockblocking my celebration ritual. And what's worse, the spoileriffic preview suggests that I may not be able to celebrate properly after next episode either! This is a serious tragedy, people!

At any rate, RIP Kintoresuki. He was a total bro of a villain right to the end. Loved the scene in this episode where he's all casually like "hey there, I'm not here for the fighting today" to Saki and everyone's totally cool with this and they just engage in friendly conversation about Saki's birthday present for Mai. Which turned out pretty okay in the end, quite possibly due to Kintoresuki's words of advice.

But yeah, the Cures have now got all the Miracle Drops they need to restore the final fountain. Since there are still nine episodes left of the series, it's clear that something has to go wrong next episode. As for just how wrong, I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Chuck of SFDebris is going into the last 3 reviews of Madoka this week with a good look at episode 10 today. Think it speaks well for the series ability to connect with people outside of the usual anime fandom. He even made a AMV.

http://sfdebris.com/videos/animation/madoka10.asp

Yeah pretty much. you dont sell those kinds of numbers unless you break through outside the otaku fandom into the general audience. Madoka did that to a degree, although I'm still not quite sure why or how.

Coherant story. Closed enough that you really don't need to know anime tropes and cliches to get things.

And "Bunny Cat's a Dick" is a universal theme anyone can appreciate.

This is the face of true evil. Mark my words, Chu Chu is the ultimate villain. He is masterminding the fall of the world.

A Wakaba focused episode! I love Wakaba! And we meet The Onion Prince. The coloring in this episode was fantastic. I usually don't notice it, but for some reason, the way the director handled the colors caught my eyes.

And it seems like the next episode will be even more Wakaba. She is so much more likable than 'I Can't Believe My Brother is This Cute' Nanami.

Also, the last few minutes were so god damn hilarious (and sad) until I saw Wakaba's actual prince. I should have expected him, since it was foreshadowed in the first episode.

At least, I finally know what the hell that confessional booth is...kind of...

Gurren Lagann is genuinely better than Madoka.

Nope. I just cannot bring myself to remotely agree with this. Honestly. Gurren was meh at best for me, even as a mech show. Had some annoying characters, a fairly boring plot who's twists and turns sometimes come out of nowhere for no reason, and really bad mecha design. I found some entertainment in the humor of the show, but everything else could not be more of a letdown after the massive amount of positive buzz the show had. It's got one, great, unexpected, emotional twist. Nothing else it does is something that hasn't been done better elsewhere.

Now Madoka, on the other hand, has interesting characters, great pacing, amazing action, and a plot that manages to somehow avoid all the cliche pitfalls of magical girl stories. I hate Magical Girl shows, and I liked Madoka.

Gifu Dodo!! Kanetsugu and Keiji 1

So the opening was the present and the series then flash backed to how they first met correct? Loved the art and the atmosphere even if I wasn't sure what was going on for part of the episode.

I suppose you are right. It explores universal themes (no pun intended) while also making sense to a general public. The art style I would have figured would put off people not familiar with ultra cute/Ume Aoki designs, but the show succeeded on its strengths beyond that.

I can only speak to my experience, but as someone who typically HATES shows with Madoka's art style (and really dislike the style in the show itself), the amount of sheer buzz it got from the general community is what sold me on giving the show a shot. Very, very few shows get the kind of buzz Madoka did. It really speaks to the quality of the story telling that it managed to hook me despite my initial disposition to hating it based on the art.

Maybe if you ignore the boring parts in the middle of Gurren Lagann.

Or the fact that 90% of the story after that early initial twist is utter nonsense.

Since I watched Madoka and Gurren Lagann pretty close to each other, I think it's kinda funny in retrospect that I actually initially disliked BOTH shows for artstyle choices.

I didn't really expect Madoka to go in the direction it was going and so even with the dark intro I didn't really think all that much of what was going to happen and ended up pretty bored with it and dropped it for a bit until I decided to soldier on and finish it at a later date. The same thing happened to me with Gurren Lagann -- I watched the first two episodes and wrote it off as typical "trying to be cool" anime, with the ridiculous character designs and Yoko's boobs. Didn't come back to it until a few weeks ago, and I'm glad I did.

Hoshi no Umi no Amuri 2

Okay, let's get this show on the road. Stream of consciousness, BEGIN.

Characters introducing themselves to each other. Did that girl just salute with her hair?

That metal...panda...thing looks kind of hollow and creepy. I think I prefer the rabbitcomputer.

Aaaaaaaand they're flying straight into the core of the GIANT OMINOUS BLACK EGGFORTRESS. Nothing can possibly go wrong with this plan. But hey, if there's air...

Yacchaou yo~ Yacchaou yo~ Yacchaou yo~

Mamiko Noto is acting awfully suspicious. Does she know something she's not letting on?

Something is glowing under eyepatch-girl's eyepatch. Of course it is, everybody knows eyepatches are for hiding dark secrets and special powers. Anybody could tell you that. Ask Takanashi Rikka.

And now she's hiding inside a metal box of some kind because she's scared. I guess phasing through things is a useful power when you want to be alone. She took the rabbitcomputer with her though. Why would she do that. Awesome rabbitcomputer should be freeeeeeee!

And now there are spikes flying everywhere. This hardly seems surprising. Everything flies everywhere in this show.

Oh hey, transformation sequence again! It's pretty lewd. But all her clothes are folded up neatly so it's okay. I think? This whole HUMAN SHIELD thing is pretty OP, especially since all the projectiles seem to fly straight back and destroy the things that shot them.

Aaaaaaaand the proud tradition of SUDDEN GIRL-ON-GIRL KISSING ACTION continues. Though really, we can narrow it down to just girl-on-Amuri. And actually this time it's more like robot-that-looks-like-a-girl-on-Amuri. Can it really be a kiss if it doesn't even have a face? Silly me, of course it can. It had the right sound effect. That's what matters, right?

Oh, it's some kind of weapon created from Amuri's own cells so she can't reflect its attacks. That's awfully convenient. But it stripped down Amuri's crazy ribbon outfit to even lewder levels so it's TOTALLY OKAY WITH ME. Good work, creepy robot girl thing. Can we be friends?

OUCH that looked like it hurt.

And now it looks like eyepatch-girl is seeing hallucinations of her sister(?) because I have no idea why. Her sister has the glowing eye thing going on though.

I'm sorry, Amuri, your song is nice and all, but when the lyrics are all "hana ga saita yo" I can't help but think of a different song that is decidedly less, er, pleasant in tone.

SAITEITAYOOOOOOO

*ahem*

Where was I.

So it looks like the hollow panda general thing isn't actually real, it's just a part of Suzu's imagined world that she uses as an escape from reality? Have I got that straight? That's a little unnerving. Is Amuri the only one not having weird hallucinations here?

And now Suzu is singing her own version of Amuri's song, which is about birds instead of flowers so now I can stop associating it with HANAGASAITAYO.

Also the animation style in Suzu's imaginary world is pretty cool, it's all kind of...pastel-sketch-esque? Or something. It's colourful and pretty. Is this really all CG? There's gotta be some serious magic at work here.

Aaaaaaaand now Suzu is transforming as well! She doesn't get much of a transformation sequence, though. Floating pantsu aside. ...Oh, I see, she doesn't need a transformation sequence because her transformed outfit is EVEN MORE LEWD than Amuri's stripped-down ribbon suit. Dear God she's basically wearing nothing but a few strategically placed strips of paper. The complaining, I am doing none of it.

Oh, the lewdness isn't done yet. Now there's some kind of field reversing the girls' abilities(????) for reasons I do not understand, and the result of this is that their practically-naked bodies are now stuck together, front-to-front. Is this what we call symmetrical docking?

Oh and now all the enemy robots are sticking to them as well. Inevitable chaos ensues. Except that it's impossible for chaos to "ensue" in this show because that would imply that chaos wasn't already happening. So I guess it would be more accurate to say the chaos levelled up? Either way, it made Mamiko Noto say OH MY GAHD. That's got to be worth something.

So now Amuri and Suzu are flying around the ominous fortress of doom with a massive chain of robots trailing behind them and then everything spontaneously goes KABOOM because giant explosions are a thing. Meanwhile eyepatch-girl is still just hiding away inside her metal cube. Seriously, girl, we all know you're going to end up transforming in the end as well, so you're gonna have to stop acting all shy at some point. Ridiculously lewd outfits are the in thing, didn't you know?

Meanwhile Amuri and Suzu are going all "DAISUKI" at each other in the midst of all the explosion and destruction. Clearly they have their priorities straight. Loli yuri takes precedence over silly little things like collapsing space fortresses.

And now Mamiko Noto is acting vaguely evil. Creepy dude is grinning in a just-as-planned sort of way, so I can only presume bad things are happening, but honestly I can't make much sense of—

Oh, the fortress is on a collision course for Earth and all of humanity is doomed. That's probably not good.

ENDING THEME oh my god there are tiny happy Suzus flying everywhere this is wonderful.

WHAT IS THIS ANIME.

(Yes I'm quoting all of this because it's wonderful.)

Thank you thank you thank you. :D

Now if only cajun and MadP would get to watching this too! I am determined to spread the wonder of this show to all of AnimeGAF. :D

4kids Special Magical DoReMi

So I picked episode 3 and 10 just to randomly check out (but not to the fullest)

As soon as 10 started with the opening, I wanted to stab my ears out, it's so awful, it was kryptonite to my lovely ears.

Of course there's also name changes up and about, only this time, they spread of Do, Re, and Mi between the main cast members instead of it solely being about Doremi.

Ai's voice....

Ai's voice..........

AI'S VOICE! THE FUCK IS THIS!? It's like someone gagged on something and it damaged their voice for life! I can't survive episodes with a voice this awful.

Takoyaki = Doodles..... Well I guess it makes more sense than calling them donuts like the Futari wa Pretty Cure dub.

Yep yep yep, this was the worst thing I've done so far in this thread.

Gurren is a simple story well told. It also has some of the best animation out of the last decade and inspired countless internet nerds to photoshop dumb looking shades onto their avatars. I like madoka, but it doesn't measure up to TTGL, at all.

Why are we even comparing Madoka to TTGL anyway? They're two vastly different types of stories with different goals and themes. It would be like comparing Terminator 1 with Jurassic Park and saying T1 is better.

It is.

I disagree that Gurren's story is simple or well told. Also, the animation might be good, but the mecha designs are terrible. Add that to action that is so over the top that it undermines itself and the show doesn't even look that good.

Gurren Lagann entropy > Madoka entropy

Because dark magical girl stories didn't exist before Madoka.

Deal with it. Gurren Lugaan has many flawed parts.

"genuinely" is truly the wrong word if you want to compare it with Madoka (ignoring the stupid apples and oranges comparison).

mecha design

Well, the designs are better than Diebuster at least.
