Having less RAM available for games than the XB1 doesn't seem like a smart idea even if it's faster RAM...

That ca. 1 GB of flexible RAM sounds weird. Why do you have to apply for it / first party only atm? And why would there be situations (games), in which the OS never needs this 1 GB?

2GB sounds far more reasonable. Leaving some room to implement more features while simultaneously reducing the memory footprint over time.

Maybe Sony isn't sure how well MS's 3xOS + Kinect is received and want to implement the same in case people are complaining the PS4 can't do all that? (like assuming the PSEye runs at all times in the background for gestures etc. even though it's optional for gamers, then DVR stuff etc.).

Guess not. Guess Sony is going to announce at Gamescom their partnership with ESPN2 and Telemundo and how they've completely did a 180 and are now a set top box. Stop being obtuse. Besides, this is a rumor until we get confirmation.

what the fuck do you think they are doing with 3.5 gigs? seriously?

look, i'm having a bit of fun at some posters expense. my shtick is aimed squarely at people that said MS was dumb for dedicating 3 of its 8 gigs of RAM for its OS but have now spun the news that the ps4 is using 3.5 of its 8 as a positive.

i know consoles have been media boxes forever and i'm ok with it. i think 5 (or 4.5) gigs is plenty of ram. i think both sony and MS will be doing really really awesome stuff on the operating system side of things.

Didn't Jonathan Blow tweet that The Wirtness was using something like 6-7GB RAM? Surely he'd know if they could only use 5.5GB?

Find it rather telling that no insider has come in here debunking this. If true it reduces the value proposition of the console.

If not true, it proves that Eurogamer has a clear Microsoft bias.

Digital Foundry's report isn't that clear. Wish they could have added more information or tried to find out more about this before publishing.

Can't wait for Sony to clear the misconceptions by confirming the OS takes up 7.5 GBs so the developers can breathe a sigh of relief at being able to continue using their 512 MBs ;)

What the fuck are the X1 and PS4 operative systems doing? What the hell, waste of resources with a lot of stupid bullshit not related to playing games :(

Apparently these multi-billion dollar companies have been procrastinating. We're like 3-4 months away from launch and they're still working on specs and building an OS. These things should've been laid down months ago and by now the only thing they should be working on is production and marketing. This goes for both Microsoft and Sony.

Then how can it be that Sony almost went with 4GB RAM?

That would have left 0.5GB for games..........

.........something doesn't add up.

3.5GB for OS? lollers

While I would trust Eurogamer with an article such as this, haven't there been a few insiders saying the article is potentially wrong? I still have some hope left ;)

soooo, they double the ram almost entirely to expand the OS footprint... doubtful.

This is what I'm thinking too. It may be weird to cite this, but when Adam Boyes was talking about how they decided on going with 8 gigs of RAM instead of 4 it was because it would make game development easier/better. So either that was a not true or this report isn't accurate. Or devs originally would only have less than 3 gigs to work with.

It also took place in a single room. Think Bigger.

No. Its a tech demo built to show what the system is capable of doing with its 'available resources' and it used only 4GB GDDR which is within this supposed 4.5GB limit. You don't go around building flashy tech demos without using most if not all of the available resources.

Nooo ....he's part of SOE/Sony Corp. It was part of his "big tradition" as discussed in one of his conferences.

By all means, correct me if I'm wrong.

He is president of Cerny Games. I think he said in his speak in Brighton that he is not paid by Sony.

I was picturing what a 7gb MultiPlatform Game was going to like like against a 5gb game, now it seems to be 5 vs 4.5, way to spoil this Girls Hard-On, Sony.

What the fuck is going on with these so called "gamers"??

Buy a system and play the games...

By these types of threads you would think people are playing the RAM. Its ridiculous, pathetic, and hilarious all at the same time!!

Never change certain subsection of GAF.

Edit: its like no one wants to use their brain and think...

A. 4.5 compared to 512mb is a stupid nice upgrade. How is that bad?
B. As the system gets older, the OS footprint could possibly shrink giving back more memory

It looks like he's gone off old dev docs and the old Killzone slides.
If there is any other source of info there, i'm missing it. I can only imagine that he saw that spanish site tweet and wanted to take a chance with getting a scoop.
One that was a negative to Sony would be irresistible to that fuckwit.

I've read his bio. He helped SONY with programming and designing their games before the PS4, but nothing suggests he's actually an official employee there.
