CVG: Microsoft to reveal 'major 3rd party game' comes free with X1 [MCV: FIFA 14]

It sounds like a good move until you realize only 7 countries in Europe are even getting the Xbox One this year.

And how many of those care for the Xbox One?

Ignoring the obvious hyperbole surrounding most powerful console, you're focusing far too much on what is essentially a mistake and if you'd bother to read the page, they clearly state at the bottom that Titanfall will be on PC and 360.

Mistakes happen. It's not part of some crazy Microsoft conspiracy to misinform gamers. I'm sure if/when someone notices or reports the mistake, it will be corrected.

You realize this is about listing Destiny as an X1 exclusive, right? That's why I've drawn a huge red border around it.

Anyway, I didn't want to derail the thread with this, just thought it was funny/sad/whatever you want it to be.

What FIFA packed in could mean for MS in EU/UK? A bump in HW sales perhaps. Now will that bump be worth it for the amount of money they most likely coughed up for this is a different story. Especially, if the packed in 3rd party game is not a timed exclusive.

Looking forward to Gamescom and seeing how this all plays out.

Reading this I'm reminded of that reddit guy that was saying cboat is wrong. Wasn't he saying how MS will sell every console they can produce? So if they are so sure that they will sell every console they can produce at 429£/499$/499€, why in the hell would they strike up such a deal and lose money that way?

Anyway this seems pretty nice for those who are getting the X1 if true. But what about those tier 2 european countries? MS already promised a free game to them. Will they get 2 free games now? Otherwise it would be pretty shitty.

This isn't good will, this is a bribe. It's how MS has planned to push the XB1 all along.

Don't like DRM? Well XB1 has Halo, bought timed exclusivity of Titanfall, etc. They then saw that those weren't enough to overcome DRM and backtracked, but originally their presumption was that consumers were all mindless whores who'd bend over in order to play a handful of worthwhile titles.

It's the same as their perpetual deal for CoD timed exclusivity on new content, the similar deal they struck for GTAIV content last generation, and what they've now paid for with both Battlefield 4 and FIFA.

None of this adds to the industry. None of it creates new meaningful content. Shit, it doesn't even employ more developers. It builds arbitrary walls and that's it.

MS' strategy to win video gamers is powered by cash handouts and lawyers. Sony's is powered by new game budgets and developers. Why does it surprise you that a hardcore community like NeoGAF can see through their bullshit and therefore refuses to take the bribe and forget just how anti-consumer they are, were, and will continue to be?

When people ask me why I think the industry would be better off without microsoft, i'll just point to this post. They don't compete by making better products and software, they compete by buying it from others.

It better be FIFA or this is going to be so dumb.

Yeah that would make for some interesting threads

Right now most are speculating under the assumption it's Fifa

Could easily be something else

If it is unannounced what could it be though?

Who could be working on it?

Someone let me know if any of the following is wrong.

So if this rumour is correct, it says every day one editon XB One owner gets a free copy of Fifa 14. However arent all pre orders for this sold out? Thus no one who has not ordered already will ever feel the impact of this deal. Therefore it will have no barring on future xbone sales and is nothing but a thank you for pre ordering the console. Sounds like a good PR line but will have no real impact. In fact does this not punish people who missed the pre orders?

Its obvious preorders are shit for xbox one. You do not do this for a launch console because they generally sell out anyway

Damn, this is pretty big for Europe.

Not really when the ps4 and fifa 14 is still cheaper. This is just playing catchup

Destiny, not Titanfall.

Destiny.

One more for the road.

Destiny.

Ultimately this does not matter one bit, never has.

The Xbox One will be a hit.
This has literally nothing to do with your original statement that I was responding to. Again - adding nothing new and using money as a bribe doesn't merit any kind of good will.

Fine. Microsoft are the spawn of the devil.
No, just con men trying to run the same branding/marketing > serving your customers con that many businessmen now buy into. They've made it clear that "the customer is always right" mindset doesn't exist there at all and instead are entirely focused on a faster way to sheer the sheep business model.

Wow....

By your logic Sony should never have been forgiven for installing root kits and the ps3 launch

PC only future!
My forgiveness springs eternal, which is why after buying an X360 at launch, a Wii in late 2007, and didn't buy a PS3 until late 2008.

But Sony earned it through actual acts of good will, namely funding quality new content. If Naughty Dog was a 3rd party studio for example The Last of Us wouldn't exist. They'd churn out Uncharted until talent drain and regurgitation drove it into the ground (see Harmonix with Guitar Hero/Rock Band, Infinity Ward with CoD, and even why MS parted ways with Bungie). That is the kind of commitment I want to see.

Right now MS is paying lip service to software development with a few new studios they're hastily trying to get going to start the generation (because they shuttered many 1st party studios last generation) while trying to market the console entirely on the legs of titles that already existed and MS is simply buying the construction of a wall between consumers and these pre-existing products.

Now if in three years or so MS is still trying to make provocative new content I'll gladly forgive, forget, and buy an Xbox One. Just like I did with Sony. But for that to happen they need to stop relying on 3rd party bullshit and instead try adding to the industry, not just fragmenting it.

Sony pays for timed exclusivity on DLC themselves, just like MS, but they don't treat it as the cornerstone of their marketing strategy. Their first party offerings are. If MS really wants to pay for CoD maps being delayed on PS4 then whatever, but don't make that your focus over providing new, meaningful content.

Fifa14 is coming out in late September on currentgen systems, PS4 will arrive sometimes in October and Xbone will be released sometimes in November. By that time, millions and millions of users will have Fifa14 in their hands, and reduced number of supported EU countries will probably lessen this new financial burden on MS, expecially if this deal is only for day1 consoles.

I don't think MS will afford to give 2 free games for each console. So if this deal is permanent then this free game will definitely be FIFA14.

Sooo.. it's looking more and more likely that it's FIFA.

Microsoft is also teasing a new Xbox One exclusive set to be announced at Gamescom. “We’re gonna have a really short stage presentation with some news, talking about some unique exclusive coming to the platform,” said Microsoft Studio's corporate vice-president Phil Spencer. “We’re going to talk about Europe’s biggest franchise and maybe some interesting things. We have some stuff, but most of the time will be spent with the press getting time with the developers, with their games. So you should think about this as a room with a lot of hands-on. We think that these platforms are about the games, and we want to give the press time with the games.”
If it's not a boxed copy that's another finger to retail.

How is it a finger to retail? They are going to move for hardware units?

"IF" Fifa is packed in/given away... more than you realize.
Why would it be more when they can still simply buy a PS4 and the game separately for less than the price of the Xbox One. Not to mention there will probably be more people buying it for PlayStation in general.

MS was ripped before the DRM changes and equally ripped after the DRM changes. As I said, it has become in vogue to simply trash anything MS does. Free game? Better find a way to spin it as a negative.

And like I said, they are still positive changes. A company will get flack for asking consumers to eat a turd, and yes, we will laugh at them when they take said turd back. You don't need to get your panties in a bunch because some immature forum dwellers refuse to acknowledge a positive change when they do make one.

trying to convince someone whose position is firmly entrenched is recipe to go nowhere. You seem stuck in your beliefs, and I simply will not engage in a debate with someone who has an inflexible opinion. Cheers.

Ok?

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Um, but yield issues has lead to halting pre-orders. How are more people going to buy the console?

My thought exactly. Would be a little weird unless this deal, if it happens, runs over the entire next year.

Or they just prepare of a SKU without Kinect or for less money earlier next year. ;-P

All I get from this thread is that Microsoft is like a girlfriend that cheated on you. No matter what happens after it, what they do to make up for it, you can't forget or forgive the betrayal. :p

Is it not possible that Destiny is timed exclusive on the One? Because that's what the news post seems to imply.

Edit: Ah I misread the post.

Huh, doesn't this news post just say Destiny is in the current list of X1 games. As in, announced X1 games ever. Nothing about exclusive.

Sony's bribe, I mean PS+ is the bomb. Nothing wrong with bribes.

Sony makes money on PS+. Developers and publishers make money while also getting great exposure for post-release titles. Gamers get a high quality "game of the month" club. Everyone wins and it adds to the industry (more people playing lesser known games) and PS+ subscribers' enjoyment of the medium (by expanding their horizons). How is that a bribe? This is a forward thinking games distribution model, the first step towards a Netflix of video games setup.

Probably just pre-installed on the HD itself.

Maybe, but if they give you a code instead it means they will have you connecting day one to Xbox live. Something MS have always wanted.

Was EA not one of the supporters of Digital downloads? If so then this may play out well for both of them.

I've seen this argument posted ad nauseam so I'll give a short rebuttle:

If you already have Fifa 14 on 360/PS3 in late September, and you're going to be buying a nextgen console in 2013, having a nextgen version of that game for free is probably going to sound like a really good deal. Afterall, no one likes switching consoles once its plugged into the tv.

Not from a marketing standpoint. "Comes with a free copy of the most popular sports series in the world" looks a lot better than "You can also buy a copy of that game" even if the latter is cheaper.

It's also worth nothing that this probably isn't happening in America with Fifa or otherwise because of the Xbox 360-Xbox One upgrade deal that Amazon and other retailers are participating in over there.
