Battlefield 4 PS4 runs at 720p native [DICE: Incorrect]

Anyone have a count on the number of times "levolution" has been brought up in this conversation?

That's a big dissapointment obviously, but they've made their choices. If you're not interested in investing the time and energy in creating a balanced game such that it can be 60fps and 1080p, something will have to give. They clearly have ambitions for the game beyond visual fidelity. I for one continue to be glad to see beautiful 1080p shooters at 30fps, and I think it's brilliant the KZ guys went for 60fps in multiplayer where it matters most and is easier to accomplish. Best of both worlds there.

For all those console players who played all those PS3/360 games at 720p, why are some of you making a fuss that BF4 is not 1080p but 720p?

If 720p was actually that bad to you, you would of moved to PC a long time ago, instead of playing on PS3/360.

True 720p maxed out at 60fps wouldn't be so bad actually imho, iirc many games past gen which were supposed to be 720p were in fact running natively at silly subhd resolutions with screen tearing and frame drops.
Finding a middle ground between 720p and 1080p would be nice though, like 1600x900 for example at a steady 60fps and graphic levels comparable to a midrange gaming pc.

My guess is that they need to 'upgrade' for 400-500 bucks? Probably it!

What the fuck does that even mean. Fucking twitter character limit.

It means, they're still optimizing and haven't settled on a resolution.

They started at 720p as the baseline. It could up end up rendering at 1600 x 900, 1080p or something weird like 1920 x 900 or whatever.

Be honest, how big of a load did you blow when you saw this thread title, Stevie? If anyone was unsure about StevieP's agenda, simply read this:

That's a direct reference to the quote from a Dice guy saying the Wii U had a "horrible, slow CPU" -- out of nowhere the dude brings up the Wii U.

So what happened over these past few months is that many Nintendo fans came to the salvation of downplaying next-gen consoles and fellating PCs after the Wii U was confirmed to be dreadfully underpowered compared to its competition. It's one of the most disingenuous trends I've ever seen here. StevieP is an enormous Nintendude, just huge. His entire post history is either defending Nintendo & the Wii U or indirectly defending Nintendo & the Wii U by downplaying the next-gen consoles. He resorts to the safety net of referencing the PC and its graphics advantage over and over... and over to avoid any real backlash. Lots of Nintendo fans here have resorted to this all because it makes the Wii U look better, that's the bottom line. Console wars. We are witnessing devious strategies that one couldn't have fathomed back at the start last gen. We've gone nuclear.

Really fantastic post. StevieP is one of the most annoying posters on gaf. I remember how he used to defend Wii U/Project Cafe before the official specs were revealed....

cool, means it will run smoother which is the most important thing.

i'm not gonna buy a 1080p tv anytime soon so 720p is good enough for me. i even play all my pc games on my 720p tv :) i prefer lower resolution if it means a better fps with more bells and whistles.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that more than 1% of gaf can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p.

I say no way...just plopped down in front of a TV with a Dualshock 4 in hand given no tech details and just told to play?...

Nope I bet just about all of the people complaining would be blown away by the visuals... a and I bet not one person would look at the rep and say "this is native 720p"

NOW...when BF4 launches you're going to have people complaining about their eyes melting from terrible blurry upscaled graphics...

Give me the option to adjust my setting just like on PC.
There should be presets on the 2 consoles, yes I know its not that easy bla bla bla.

Yeah, and people can only see up to 24fps anyway.

This is a cross-gen title right? If PS4 had to be "pushed" for 720/60fps, then what the hell would the PS3 version be like?

64 players + destruction + big map + lot of geometry + vehicles + all the physics calculations + modern shaders + next gen audio

cross gen my ass bro. Have you played BF3 on ultra? It is next gen

Can't say I'm shocked since DICE has never been good at consoles. I know which multiplayer launch game ill never touch though!

"Captain, scanners have located a huge amount sodium chloride in this post."

That's the preferred way to address these kind of posts on NeoGAF now, right?

I must say, it's kind of depressing coming in to a new gen and still having to deal with 720p...that's such a last gen thing. As I said before, I'd rather the frame rate drop.
Yea 1080p is much more important to me than FPS. Your eyes adjust to the FPS anyways, but better image quality goes a long way.

Will upscaled 1080p look better than just standard native 720p on a 1080p LED?

It's going to get up scaled somewhere...either your console or your TV...your TV is a fixed pixel display, it can only display its native resolution...so if the console passes it a 720p signal then the TV will upscale it...

So it will all depend on which has the better up scaler...

Yeah, and people can only see up to 24fps anyway.

Completely irrelevant

I believe there was a quote from some developer earlier where they focus tested 30fps vs 60fps and 720p vs 1080p and in testing gamers noticed the resolution difference a lot more than they did the frame rate!

I posted this in another thread but a Dev said of their focus tests the general public recognized the difference between a lower resolution much more readily than a lower frame rate.

720p 60fps
Remember this gaf. Some large franchises coming that will be hitting that target instead of 30fps 1080.

While this is disappointing, I can only hope it's because it's a launch title and in the future we'll see many more 1080p/60 games.

Crazy that a sorta older PC can already out perform unreleased next gen consoles. I don't really think that was the case at the start of this gen. Wasn't the 360 considered sorta high endish at release?

This was inevitable and I remember a lot of members stating their preference for compromise (720p 60fps or 1080p 30fps). So, I don't know why is it all that surprising.

Also, looks like StevieP is having the time of his life.

Pretty sure it was GG when they were focus testing for KZ:SF...then they went and made MP 1080p@60fps anyway lol

If you're shown 1080p vs 720p with all other assets being completely equal (textures, AA, lighting, shadows, etc...) in a side by side comparison, then yes you will notice the difference...

My point is simply that if I took a random, gaffer...sat them in front of a TV with a PS4...and told them to have at BF4 for a couple hours...I don't think anyone would look at me and say..."this looks like crap, obviously it's 720p native"

Especially if I told the, it was 1080p...they wouldn't know I was lying...no way

they pretty much won't go for 1080p if they want visuals. They will almost always sacrifice some resolution to pump out the visuals and FPS. BF4 prolly will come in at 800-900p come launch.

I figured it would be below 1080p because they only ever mentioned the 60fps part. To be expected. If it was 1080p, we would have known/heard. I was expecting 900p instead of 720p, though, but we actually haven't heard anything from DICE about that so it could BE 900p.

The consoles are the usual 8-10 times power jump, the only difference is that they are 3 years late this time.

People should be happy that they will get to experience a basically unhinged BF experience on consoles for the first time. The technical s are ok and could be better but 64 players on consoles is pretty big. People are going to really experience what makes Battlefield, Battlefield.

That sounded right when I said it.

Hmm. As excited as I was a few months ago for next gen - preordered a killzone ps4 from amazon - I'm beginning to second guess myself.

I have an x51 with a 660 and I'm starting to think I might just stick to that for the rest of the year(should be comparable in performance??) and then debate either upgrading my pc with nvidias next card or getting a ps4 if enough exclusives end up living up to their hype.
