The real challenge for the new Ippo anime will be navigating through the morass of post-New Challenger content (and it's not like NC was great). In short: it sucks.

Anime should diverge as far away from the manga as possible.

I recommend they start the new season off with a kiss and then a sex scene. Get that terrible stuff out of the way first.

We're entering Gundam Seed territories in here. Also, at Izuru's love interest infodump lol that we saw coming.

Hey now! There's Takamura's second big fight! And then.....

Yeah.

Oh I guess maybe
Miyata's match against his Dad's Rival's Son.
if they push it maybe but for all that was hyped it wasn't amazing.

Gatchaman Crowds Episode 7: Oh, hey, they remembered to bring an action sequence this week, even if it a rather one sided ass kicking to truly establish the power of the enemy. I also find it interesting in how much screen time and chracter development Utsu-tsu has been getting, rather unexpected.

Regarding the recent talk about Evangelion, I've seen it a few times where people mention watching the "Director's Cut" version of episodes 21-24. They have what seems to be some added footage from the "Death" movie that wasn't in the original release. Taking a look as far as western releases and there was an 8 DVD set by ADV Films and then the most recent release looks like a DVD boxset called the "Platinum Edition" by A.D. Vision.

Does the earlier ADV Films release not have the directors cut versions where the A.D. Visions release does? or does the A.D. Visions release contain both and people are just recommending that people prioritize more the directors cut versions or something?

---

Now that you mention 'Kanada Style'... I've already posted about this same Facebook account earlier, but for a quick taste of everything related to Mr. Kanada and his further influence, this place created by Mexican pal Tito Alarcón (@TitoHabif) is one of the very first you need to go to:

The Kanada Style 「金田スタイル」 | Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/thekanadastyle

Thanks for this. :)

I'll have to give it a more thorough look later but it could be interesting to go through some of these older shows sometime. Even just to maybe watch the opening or something if that was more the highlight of animation for certain particular shows. It has some nice artwork in general posted as well, like what we were commenting on regarding Birth.

Rozen Maiden 8

What more can I say? The show continues to be good, it has everything AnimeGAF wants, but I still can't convince people to watch it anyway. This week, Hatekeyama shows off his montage skills. Jun continues to do Jun-like things, while dolls plot their doll schemes. The art direction is still as solid as ever. Good music too.

It's unfortunate. :(
Personally, if the show keeps up the quality its had and has a satisfying enough ending, then I'll probably be putting it somewhere in my AOTY top 10 list.

I was busy regarding getting comments on previous episodes posted. The first two times I did so in the OT it seemed to generate at least some responses but it doesn't look like that this third time. :(

Be right back, reading calmly Nafe impressions to the sound of this:

トップをねらえ! D弐 47:時の河を越えて...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8IIPKHR6eA

I'm always resorting to this link (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=44669444&postcount=17460), shows how much it is a favorite of mine!

It's a good song. It bring back memories of the bitter sweetness...(Gunbuster ending spoilers!)
Poor Jung. I think I end up feeling more sorry for her than Noriko's friend as there was at least a chance she could still see her :(

Actually, regarding Gunbuster, I asked about the recent Bluray release a few months ago now I guess. Taking another look at it and it lists updates to the sound and picture like one would probably expect but also an "untrimmed" version of episode 6. Does anyone know what this means? Was some footage cut or do they mean it was originally made in one aspect ratio but has been usually released in another?

It mentions having the previous specials, like the one detailing the mass produced "Sizzler" units, but mentions adding a brand new special as well. Does anyone know what this new special is about?

You have excellent musical taste. That is also a personal favorite ;).

I agree. :)

I saw you comment that you don't get many responses here so it seems like you're ignored. I try to read as many posts as possible so, I personally anyway, wasn't ignoring you. I just haven't responded because most of my replies I think wouldn't be that interesting and more probably just be some variation of "I agree."

I thought I'd respond this time though as it might swing you more into the conversation.

They also need to bring back the original composer, if they haven't pissed him off to much.

So I suddenly acquired a laserdisc player today. Are there any English-language anime LD releases worth owning as a curiosity?

Gatchaman Crowds 7

  • Art was appreciably better this ep.
  • Guess there's a need for heroes after all.
  • Another tease at a team dynamic that wasn't followed through on.
  • Hajime/Katze discussion reminded me a lot of the initlal JJ conversation where she knew where he was despite his attemp to fool her.
  • Elimination of the Hundred narrows the conflict, I think, to Gatchaman vs Katze
  • Fully expect Jou to be depowered after that encounter. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if next week's OP had him back in human form at the end rather than suited up.

Rozen Maiden (2013) 3

This show continues to surprise me. It's like Rozen Maiden with all the irritating bits stripped out and a whole load of low key character drama installed instead.
I do miss Detective PunPun a little bit, though
. I particularly enjoyed the transition of the sewing montage into the flashback sequence - and, as Nafe has pointed out, Jun's backstory is quite different this time round, and infinitely more preferable and understandable.

The slow introduction (despite that crazy first episode) may be throwing me off the scent a little - after all, it's only in the closing moments of this episode that
Shinku is revived
, which is obviously a key part of how the show will develop. But I'm very much enjoying what I've seen so far.

With that said, as others have mentioned it's incredibly difficult to actively recommend the show. It's more "intriguing" than "amazing" - the art and animation are decent but not spectacular (and sometimes I'm not a huge fan of the filtered background art), the dialogue pleasantly understated, and nothing much has really happened as yet.

I mean, it appeals in all the same ways that those first few episodes of Sankarea did (for me, at least) but I can't necessarily articulate how, beyond saying that it's skilfully paced and directed.

Yesh. Waifu wars are srsbsns of the ultimate importance.

Iwai is wonderful but she has no place beating Shizuku. Fate beating Kuroyukihime pleases me because Kuroyukihime is way overrated, but the fact that she is listed as "Snow Black" does not please me, and I'm not sure how I feel about Mayaka's position. Emilia and Urabe's positions are fine by me, though that's mostly because I don't actually know any of the other characters they're competing against.

Servant x Service 8

Holy fuck Hasebe why is it that every time I think you are the greatest character ever you do something that proves that I was actually underestimating how great you really are. You and Lucy make the most ridiculously cute couple and I wish you only the best of luck in your romantic struggles. GANBAREEEEEEEEE

Have I mentioned the part where this is totally anime of the season?

I didn't know Mongolia was supposed to be such a beautiful country.

Dammit Pop, why couldn't you get up sooner? I want to see Pop doing really awesome witch things.

Also, a backscratcher is one of the easiest things to improvise. Why didn't they just want to have a paperweight so badly while they were at it?

A lot of people are too concerned about "things happening". I'm not saying this to you specifically, but I've seen in several places lately the critique that a show is bad if there isn't enough "plot" taking place. But art isn't about the density of plot. If a work has strong atmosphere, strong direction, strong characterization, and so forth, then I don't need battles or screaming or melodrama. The only problem that arises with a lack of plot is when there's nothing of substance beyond the plot to take its place. And really, if there's nothing of substance in a work beyond the plot it can't be a top-notch work.

Speaking for myself, I would actively recommend Rozen Maiden to anyone, at least anyone who empathizes with the desire to soak in a fictional work.

Oh, absolutely. The appeal of iyashikei anime to many is the complete lack of typical "plot", after all - I don't think Rozen Maiden is anything like that, and I'm not saying that it's a bad thing that nothing's really happening yet either, but although I will take a recommendation based purely on strong technical elements I don't know how I'd sell it to someone based on its plot, which I would have to do for most people.

Date A Live - Episode 1

This has got to be the weirdest introduction to a show I've ever seen. Those first 5mins are definitely going on my list. Anyways I guess the show's premise hasn't been explained yet but at least it sounds decent.

Also someone mentioned sleepy eyes girl to me a long time ago and I finally saw her, she's very interesting. Also, the white haired girl in the armor has the best costume so far.

The Date A Live website background has changed again to that girl no-one likes, presumably for the upcoming vol 3 release. Kurumi's up next, right? Right?

Ugh Origami..
why do worst girls always get lots of sctreentime and attention??

That's what Date A Live is!? Holy moly, I never looked into it because the name sounded like a plain romance anime. I didn't know it had chicks in tight metal gear.

Is it any good?

date a live is really fun!
I dunno about good because the premise is completely silly but its highly entertaining.

I agree. :)

I saw you comment that you don't get many responses here so it seems like you're ignored. I try to read as many posts as possible so, I personally anyway, wasn't ignoring you. No worries, I didn't intend to make it a big deal. I suppose it's partly due my own inherent shyness. I do try to at least have something intelligent to say when I do post, but I could do a better job in engaging myself in some of the conversation.

Now here's a random thought, since School Days was brought up earlier: I am actually kinda considering getting a custom license plate for my car that says "Nice Boat" (if it hasn't been taken). Thoughts? If I'm going to do this I want to make it as absurd as possible.

Yes, they're wearing sarafans.

I presume that people who watch G&P already know this, but Sumire Uesaka, who voices Nonna, actually studied (studies?) Russian at university according to this article.
Oh yeah, she's a huge Russia otaku. I mean, how many other seiyuu happily pose with a Dragunov rifle for their Twitter photos?

Heck, her Twitter profile ends with "Я люблю Россию!!" which is "I love Russia!!" in Russian.

Apparently babies need special plants too! 9 episodes in. Of course they tell Dela to fuck off to go somewhere else to get herbs (on top of using Onpu to sell shit)

And apparently who they went to see was Majo Rika's mother. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

I'm not a big fan of it myself but i gets much much better when Polnareff shows up.
I guess I have something to look forward to I guess.

I saw Skywalker Sound in anime credits just recently; they worked on 009 Re:Cyborg.
I mean it's not the only case probably, it's just that...
Yeah I can't quite imagine how that all came about.
Yes I can't imagine how they came up with that. Moreover there is a ton of western names on the opening credits. Maybe it was co-produced?

I didn't know Mongolia was supposed to be such a beautiful country.
A big part of it is the Gobi desert, however it does have a fair bit of plains and lowe industrialisation so I don't know how accurate that portrayal is.

By the way, thanks a bunch for not marking this as "Haganai LN 9 spoilers" or anything. Because, you know, some of us might not realize what it was just from the link title alone since we don't lurk /a/ all the time.

Just so you know, I agree with you, even if it's not a spoiler I particularly care about. Saying anything "goes School Days" is a pretty big spoiler.

Well Smile Precure also had a small moment where they were in Mongolia in the plains as well. I should probably take a little bit of time to go read up on the country instead of getting my only impressions of the country through anime, cause that would just be wrong.
