Hey, that's a clever (fortuitous?) little bit of localisation. Neat.

Now I know how some folk in here feel when watching Watamote!

That cold open placing Jun as older was so good. Almost as good as the manager's criticism following him even after he left his work. The "Will you wind it? WIll you not wind it?" page in the magazine was great too. The depressing look into Jun's mundane adulthood gained an ethereal quality in a second or two as a consequence. I won't lie either.
The email from his younger self had an incredible tension to it in its presentation. I wish more horror oriented stuff could capture that.
Final shot of the incomplete Shinku seemed to be this wonderfully succinct summary of Jun's life too: unfulfilled dreams and unfinished tasks.

Quick question: Is this following the manga or is this some sort of anime original divergent story?

It's following the second manga series. The first episode was the entire first manga series.

The Light of El Cantare
Finished Shinigami no Ballad, which I was watching at a couple of episodes per week due to the fact that ep.1 onward was viewable on my cable provider's Anime on Demand service and I thought I'd try to make my workouts less boring.

I've discussed the peculiar badness of Maiden Japan's dub before, but the final episode managed to knock me for another loop in this regard. For half of the episode, I kept wondering why several girls kept referring to their classmate as "Señor Matsumoto". He was a quiet boy who liked to play the piano and had no discernible affiliation with Hispanic culture or language. But then, it dawned on me--they weren't saying "Señor" but "Senior", which just meant that, like many bad dubs, it was slavishly attempting to retain Japanese honorifics that have no analogous use in English. The girls were all saying "Matsumoto-senpai". I should have understood immediately given that characters in previous episodes had already done equally-awkward "Big Bro"/"Big Sis"/etc. stuff.

I feel lazy for not writing anything about the actual content of the show itself, but it's one of the most boring and lifeless (no pun intended) things I've ever watched and I don't particularly feel motivated to ruminate on my experience of watching paint dry. Fortunately I got Crunchyroll working on a ghetto $99 drugstore Android tablet that my sister gave me so I'm no longer at the mercy of what Anime on Demand has available. Somehow, I'm able to balance the tablet on the digital panel of my exercise bike.

Caught up with this one too. Still think that Hajimessu is one of the single most annoying characters I've ever seen and she's not doing the show any favors, but (ep.7)
damn if her conversation with Mamoru FABULOUS Miyano Berg-Katze didn't have amazing chemistry. Those two play off each other well, at least
.

Love Lab Episode 8: Well, The Legend of The Galactic Heroes approves of that casual racism. Anyway, probably the best episode of the series thus far and thank god that Cram School nonsense last week was nothing more then a cheap gag and also the male tag team of blandness is kept out of the picture. Anyway, if Riko is traumatized over her nickname, I do wonder what her eventual reaction to the fact that given the events in the background, the entire school wants to sleep with her. That is going to be something truly marvelous to behold. Indeed the meat of this episode was seeing the Love Lab engage in a game of human chess with the Newspaper Association while fighting their own rampant insanity. Then Sayo has to go and forget the rules of the game and must now fall on her sword in order to spare the others, or so it looks.

Just liked this shot.

And no sleep for me tonight!

The flashback that featured the shaming of Jun's artistic ability was really uncomfortable. I mean, that's the intention but I didn't think it'd work so well. Jun being so absolutely crushed by the real world is sad. Being defined that way helps sell the intended atmosphere, I suppose.

Ah ah you have no idea ...

Answer this question first : did you enjoy those 2 eps or not ?

DATE-A-live is ANything but plain.
Yeah it has those kind of chicks ..but they are the worse girls.
you can still enjoy it if you try.

Date a live is a quite fun take on harem. Lotsa waifu tier girls to choose from.

Should I even bother posting these this year?

Sure. Im already mad at the results though lol.

So I suddenly acquired a laserdisc player today. Are there any English-language anime LD releases worth owning as a curiosity?

Theres actually a lot that ive seen. Laserdiscs can be found for pretty cheap.

Date A Live - Episode 1

This has got to be the weirdest introduction to a show I've ever seen. Those first 5mins are definitely going on my list. Anyways I guess the show's premise hasn't been explained yet but at least it sounds decent.

Also someone mentioned sleepy eyes girl to me a long time ago and I finally saw her, she's very interesting. Also, the white haired girl in the armor has the best costume so far.

Sleepy eyes girl is Reine and she is fuckin wonderful.

Anything that gets the Cajun stamp of approval is something I'm willing to check out.

:D

So is this some sort of traditional Russian dress or what

I was sort of irritated at the first image until I realized it was set up for the second later on in the episode. Also something something establishing a lighter tone for the relationship featured in the episode vs the crushing reality in episodes 2 & 3.

Liked how Shinku seemed uncomfortable in this largely adult world. Even detected at some hinted envy when Jun wasn't entirely complacent with her demands but was overeager to help his coworker.

God, seeing Jun gush over the material and costume design stuff was such a relief. Didn't think he'd ever come across as happy.

The Light of El Cantare
AnimeSols has a new series streaming: Mahou no Idol Pastel Yumi, likely in large part due to the fact that its franchise predecessor Creamy Mami was one of the two series for which they've successfully managed to crowdfund a physical release. This one is noteworthy because, unlike the majority of AnimeSols content, this is the first time that this series has received an English translation in any form.

Fun episode is fun!

So after antics by the sea last episode, we're covering another traditional summer activity: ghost stories, and the classic "test of courage". Which makes for an entertaining romp, because all of the girls have different...tolerance levels for this kind of stuff. Nozomi and Urara really get into the spirit of it, clinging to each other adorably the whole time in a mixture of fear and excitement, Karen outwardly seems to be perfectly calm about the whole thing but screams as loud as anyone when caught off guard, Komachi really is completely unfazed and finds the whole thing rather amusing, and Rin...well, there's always one who falls into abject terror at the very thought of ghosts, and guess who it is here. (The mascots are along for the ride too, and all three try to put on a brave face but aren't entirely convincing.)

And of course there are a few...complicating factors in this particular haunted-house expedition. The first being that Arachnea is hanging around in the shadows, and under Kawarino's instruction is attempting to use fear as a tool to weaken the Cures before defeating them (which basically means providing the requisite scares that every good haunted house needs). The other complication is that
the house really is haunted, and the ghost has his eyes set on Rin in particular
.

All this leads up to a surprisingly sweet finale where
the group meet the real ghost face-to-face, find that he's actually a pretty nice guy, and then help to protect him from Arachnea's tactless violence.
Naturally Rin, as the focus of this episode, gets to use her new special attack for the first time: PRECURE ROUGE BURNING! And Rin
gets a cute new accessory out of the bargain, as even after realising she's not the lost lover he was looking for, the ghost is moved by her kind actions and is finally able to pass on happily.
Oh, Rin. Why are your love interests always distinctly unachievable?

So their big fight only served to make a big mess in Jun's room. lmao

I can identify with Jun to a degree so I'm fully expecting this positive spell to end soon and horribly at that. Something like a "when it rains, it pours" situation.

I can't believe I forgot this example of how being Rin is suffering. They should've made Rin green considering how much Toei hates her.

Ojamajo Doremi 36

Aw yeah. Dodo for the win!

I have to wonder if that bracelet Majo Ruka gave Unpu really does protect her from those sort of consequences, or if she's just pulling her leg. Either way, makes me uneasy to hear her say so certainly that Majo Ruka will protect her. Seems pretty certain that she'll stab her in the back and ditch her the second she stops being useful, which should probably be around the time she gets elected queen (also, queens aren't elected).

Why'd they even bother making Pop a witch apprentice if they really weren't going to do anything with her other than have her be a running joke for not being able to wake up for her witch exams? Come on, give her some love.

Onpu, and it does work, because if it didn't, she would've been punished immediately.

Also Pop does get a bit of use

Yeah that's true. But how does she even have a bracelet like that? The Magic Kingdom can't possibly be letting her use it. Eh, like I said though, Majo Ruka is totally using her and will totally leave her hung out to dry once she's done with her.

Well she need to be a witch first to wear out her usefulness, on top of having to turn Majo Ruka back.

And Majo Ruka
Isn't that much of a bitch

Course she is! She was selling cursed charms to people. She could have just made her money without doing that, but she did it anyway. And she's been actively trying to obstruct Doremi, Aiko, and Hadzuki from passing their exams just to fuck with Bunyu-chan. She's certainly a much better businesswoman and entrepreneur than Bunyu-chan, but she is a bitch.

The cursed charms was probably the worst thing she did (although she really should've made sure Onpu knew not to break the rules, so giving her that charm was pretty dumb).

Just be glad your order didn't have to go through Paris. I'm convinced the FedEx route through Paris goes through the city's catacombs or a black hole or something, because more than once I've had experiences like this:

iFxGIUZKPszey.png

I'm still scarred by the fact that apparently going to CALIFORNIA, was easier than going to my house. I have never seen this before. I'm utterly baffled. I don't know how this works. Feels bad to give UPS shit when they haven't pulled something like THIS on me.

Wait, you're in Alaska, right? Why'd it go from Alaska to fucking Oakland?

I should be glad I don't import, so I don't have to put up with this shit.

I imported like 4 games years ago, and this hasn't happened to me. I don't know how it went to Oakland though!

There's the possibility that it's being transferred to a FedEx Smartpost facility, in which case it'll be handed over to the USPS and delivered that way.

Jun's so fragile. Even things are working out, there's still a sense of inevitability that things will go awry and drag him down again harder than before.

Figured that was the case with the new doll parts. Made sense to play on Jun's latent desperation.

In California?

I mean nevermind the expected date is Monday. It's not going to make it here.

Yeah, it's possible. Whenever I order something from Amazon, for instance, they ship it FedEx and it completely bypasses Cincinnati, goes to the FedEx Smartpost drop-off center in Columbus, and comes back to Cincinnati via USPS. It's slow and shitty and my packages routinely miss their ETAs.

But then, in his case at least, why would they bother sending it to Alaska in the first place?

Also I haven't ordered that many things from Amazon, but I've never had a problem with ETAs.

"The Mild One" and Suzu's various insecurities/athletic inabilities were definitely the highlights of the episode. I hope the ending isn't gonna lead to more of the cringeworthy drama from a couple episodes ago.

oh and the blackface stuff was really fucking dumb and i'm glad it didn't last for long

Well this whole situation certainly opens my eyes to this whole thing, and I can completely see this missing the ETA. It sucks because I spent 15 bucks instead of 9 dollars for better shipment.

Watch it be in St. Louis tomorrow.

I'm holding this to you

Ordered from HobbyLink Japan. However, Amazon completely spoiled me with Early Deliveries, either before the ETA, or even on the earliest on the ETA. Whereas UPS and Fedex have always been the last day possible as I remember from ordering Style Savvy, Soul Hackers, and now my Figures.

I'm pretty sure there was an Amazon warehouse in Tucson, or something, because I used to always order things with Free Shipping and get my package in like four days.

A lot of my packages ship from Hebron, Kentucky, which is very close to where I live, but they all still overshoot me by 100 miles and get put on the USPS mule.

But then, in his case at least, why would they bother sending it to Alaska in the first place?

Also I haven't ordered that many things from Amazon, but I've never had a problem with ETAs.

It could just be coincidence that they have a distribution center in Anchorage. Carriers don't always follow the most efficient route for delivery; here's an image I made a couple of years ago illustrating the path of some anime I purchased from DeepDiscount that shipped via DHL. At one point the package was less than 50 miles from me and then went all the way back to California.

e: package was apparently in Tennessee when I made this but I think that was its last stop.

Apparently Zavvi is supposed to be the absolute worst when it comes to that sort of thing.

Depends on the carrier rather than the retailer I'd say. Can't speak for how they ship domestically, but I've imported several games from Zavvi and they all arrived. Of course, international ship times are highly variable, so I did occasionally have a package that took three weeks to arrive as opposed to the usual week.

The much more pressing issue that I experienced with Zavvi was their poor packaging as they would often wrap highly crushable objects in a layer of brown paper and nothing else.

Opening montage was lovely and did a better job at storytelling than I'd have thought possible. It was also nice to see Jun assert himself at work. That's liable to blow up soon..

Shinku being used as a prop played nicely against the earlier stuff of him being ashamed of his ability. As a child, he caught so much shit for it. As an adult, no one thought twice about it despite him rushing to defend having her.

Anyhow, that was a nice run of anime to check out tonight. Hosanna and Branduil picked a real winner to champion and I hope more people check it out because it's legit good. Pacing deserves some sort of commendation too as episodes 2-8 just sort of blew by such that I'd be surprised when the OP showed up. Never really a dull or wasted moment.

The uguu~ Riko stuff was gold, but that was such a sudden transition to the blackface stuff (which was deeply uncomfortable). At least it didn't last long, and it didn't feel malicious.
