Killer is Dead Reviews Thread

Some choice quotes from Polygon:

Polygon said:
Killer is Dead would almost work as a parody of some of the worst elements of the last twenty years of video games, were it not so dead serious — and pathetically incompetent.

Polygon said:
It’s difficult to understate how shoddily assembled every piece of Killer is Dead feels... The camera is horrendous, "sticking" on enemies and blocking the view of the game at the worst possible time; the screen tears in multiple places almost all the time... As often as not, Killer is Dead can’t display a coherent image on the screen.

Polygon said:
Killer is Dead is deeply misogynistic... Every female character in the game exists to be rescued, killed, gawked at, or f**ked for an in-game item.

If this game is mechanically on par with Lollipop Chainsaw I think I can deal (anyone here know?). I'm totally in love with the tone and aesthetics from what I've seen. Waaaaay more interesting than NMH parody garbage.

Not exactly surprising, although I expect one or two more scores in the 6-8 range than we're seeing. Glad I'm not picking it up day one, but it'll be a bargain pickup at Christmas or something.

This is what happens when a game dev builds up trust based on the fact that he's JAPANESE & WACKY! and hence is obviously superior to evil western devs/pubs like EA.

Overrated Hack.

Goddamn, what the fuck happened Suda51? :(

NMH & Killer 7 will forever be the only decent action games he made? :(

Time for him to get back to the adventure titles then. Flower Sun & Rain DS was pretty dope.
Killer 7 gameplay isn't particularly good... it's actually pretty annoying to play, I beat it purely on atmosphere and characters alone. I think I actually really hate the gameplay.

For reference, how did Lollipop Chainsaw score from those websites?

IGN gave it a 3/10 or some such.

Killer Is Dead confirmed for the better game!

A game like Killer7 would be completely slaughtered if it were released today and it is probably his most divisive title to this day. Still my second favorite game of all time. The only reason I read into Suda reviews these days is to find out if the combat/game play is at least palatable, and it looks miles above Lollipop from what I'm seeing. Everything else is something that requires experiencing it rather than seeing it through as a game.

Gamereactor: 7/10

"If you enjoy Grasshopper Games, you'll probably end up liking this one as well. There's still a good amount of Suda-moments, such as a scene with a rhino in it or a certain sequence where a man gets run over by a train".

This game is a satire of Suda51 games right? Of shitty, over indulgent parody games. These reviews are intentional and all part of the PR cycle. It's meant to highlight how the mainstream press just don't "get" Suda51 right? Right? A modern day Flower, Sun and Rain?

That sure would be nice.

Push Square - 5/10

A slice or six short of a solid recommendation, Killer Is Dead shows that Suda51’s schtick is swiftly running out of steam. The title’s sharp art style and snazzy soundtrack will no doubt lure you in, but the schlocky story and garish gigolo missions will leave you swatting at the air in regret. This is not a bad game, it’s just a boring one – and we never thought that we’d say that about a release that sees you chasing a tiger on a motorcycle.

Dull game. The combat's alright, but it doesn't make up for the boring missions, absolutely daft plot, and terrible gigolo missions. There's just not a lot to get excited about.

i don't know, i still want to play it for the art and music. now it'll have a more... watching a car crash feel though. Perhaps a fitting end to a generations worth of strawberry shortcake.

hope you feel similarly about "indie" devs, they seem to lay it on 100x thicker

Then again it's not hard to be better than EA. Deep Silver released the worst game since Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green this year, but they're still better than EA, come on now

Dead serious? Hmm, that game never takes itself serious at all... It's has fourth wall breaking moments, ridiculous bosses and other craziness.

You can't exactly blame people for wanting something different from the norm, though. It's perhaps disappointing that by the sounds of it, the actual gameplay of Suda's games continues to frustrate and lessons continue to not be learnt on turning interesting concepts and visual flair into a far more competent, playable game.

For me, I'm still gonna pick this up. Critics hated Lollipop Chainsaw and I had a ton of fun with it, so I'll look forward to this too.

Yikes.

Wasn't expecting scores this low.

Jumping ship before this becomes a shitstorm thread of Suda haters vs Suda fans.

Reading the reviews, it seems the "boring gameplay until you reach a boss" model is still being used. No More Heroes was released 6 years ago, yet it feels like Suda51 still keeps making games with the same flaws. :-\

Suda just needs to go back to doing whatever the fuck he wants. His latest titles seem to fit squarely in the "third person action" genre. I miss the Flower, Sun and Rain and Killer 7 days. I'm still playing this and seeing for myself though, it wouldn't be the first time reviews were dead wrong about a game.

I don't agree with that at all. Loved those as well as Lollipop Chainsaw and Shadows Of The Damned. All great, very underrated games.

It's Gies, same person that brought us this amazing quote about Vanquish

Oh right, yeah, I forgot about that... quote... -_-

The Gamespot reviewer sort of knocked the game for the same stuff, being Japanese with "anime cliches" and... how because its story is wacky it can't match the Western contemporaries...

Like wtf lol.

No, it's not because I had Suda51 as my picture, but ha! This is mostly BS. I never read reviews but I had to read a few of these to form my opinion on what the reviewers said. All it did is reiterate my point in my gaming journalism today is terrible. I'm not talking about scores or how my opinion is the right opinion, but the fact that so many missed key points of the game.
Yes, I have infact already completed Killer is Dead and most of the negatives are trivial in reality but overexaggerated in the "reviews".

I'd easily say the worst part about Killer is Dead is the horrendous amount of screen tearing. Modern Gaming Journalism, what a load of shite.

I also played this game when two other females were in the room and not one of them were offended but instead, found the gigolo mode silly fun. It happens in real life and people are just as creepy like that, while some females enjoy that kind of attention. It's also worth noting that the reason you do those side missions is because it's to give you upgrades, not for beating off too(well, if you want to you can). If games like Killer is Dead is getting average reviews then maybe Suda51 should stick to make games with shades of brown and greys which have you being in the military killing crap.

Edit: Again, I don't care for reviews and their stupid scores because of "PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS" like this. Not enough detail and far too much emphasis on what they don't like.
I highly recommend this game if you're looking for a game that's fun amongst this depressing level of super serious games we've gotten this year(aside from the recent Pikmin, Animal Crossing and Wonderful 101).

The very beginning scene is one of the best playable intros. Loved it. Can't wait to get the soundtrack.

I'm a Grasshopper Manufacture fan :) I genuinely find their games a blast to play - they're usually a bit janky, not even have the best graphics but always very enjoyable to play with a great B movie style with some fun ideas. Unfortunately I forgot this was out and can't afford it right now but I'll be getting it as soon as I can.
