Killzone Shadow Fall Multiplayer Impressions - PAX Prime

Fast paced, run and gun.

Seems consistent with what that video truly told us, and why I'm not at all excited for this game's multiplayer component.

And if people are truly naive enough to think the entire style and feel of a game's gunplay will change in the final two months of development, then more power to you. But you're living in a bubble.

Everything is shaping up to be great but what is this shitty wall hack I keep seeing in these videos? It looked like it was just on all the time and not even some special ability. I hope that shit is turned off by default.

Wait, what? So far, all we've seen is a kill montage and some people playing a demo on a single map against bots while using a controller they've never used before in a game they've never played before.

How exactly is that representative of what the entire game is going to play like?

Never understood why people have a problem with ADS. Have you ever tried hitting a target in real life whilst hip firing? ADS is more accurate and I hope the spray and pray play style of hip fire is seriously nerfed make these people learn to aim properly

Isn't FXAA being used in most current-gen games on X360 and PS3 though? I really can't see any developer opt for no AA when FXAA is available.

yes (or MLAA on a lot of ps3 games i think). I'm not sure about this MP footage though. But hopefully they have something in MP too.
Hopefully TMAA will be a much better method though.

They should use everything but FXAA. There are so many alternatives... FXAA muddies up that great 1080p image quality. If they stick with it for aunch... it would be disappointing for tehir art IMO... they should just use SMAA or even MLAA

Agree. I hate FXAA. On top of the blur it really doesn't work all that well in cleaning up jaggies. At least use SMAA.

Nope, sorry, E3 is already difficult for us to pay for, PAX is simply not an option.
"Nice" to see that the build that was only shown behind closed doors at Gamescom (and that only 5 sites in France got to see) 10 days ago is now playable by the public. I'd love the reasoning behind this...

Why doesn't GAF just raise the money for gamersyde to attend these events, would not be a biggie.

So another thread states Ryse looks crap and now Killzone has issues, haven't been excited on either of the games, the one that I am really looking forward to is Watchdogs (next gen versions)

How hard can it be to send a newer build though? Wouldn't they want their best face to be shown to the general public, especially in NA?

You underestimate the amount of effort required to make a vertical slice of a game still in development. Polish and optimization are usually left til very late in development.

While there may be 'issues', this is probably due to an older build of the MP portion of the game. The videos that have been released so far look amazing and I have no doubt the game (especially the single player game) will look absolutely mindblowing on my 55".

I tried the multiplayer beta, and it's nice. It could use a little bit more work for the gunplay and close-quarters combat to feel more visceral. Also, it's definitely weird for me now to play a FPS without vibrations lol.

Edit : I'm talking about the Vita game; sorry for the confusion.
Impressions of the image quality, Tribes?

It's crisp, to say the least. If you want, if the beta permits it I'll take a few screenshots.

Graphically, it's impressive for a handled. This combined with the smooth framerate (how much I can't tell you but there aren't any hiccups) and the Vita's beautiful and small screen make for a visually pleasing result. I don't feel some jarring effect going from playing a PS3 FPS to this.
Some textures could use work though, I don't know if it's because the engine didn't load the texture correctly/in time but sometimes it feels unrefined, particularly rocks.

The animation definitely suffered, the explosion and various death/character animations do not feel like the mainline games' (you know all those impressive Killzone gifs ? Well this game doesn't feel like this). Maybe it's because it's multiplayer and I was to busy fleeing from ambushes and fragging, I'll test it out a little more.

Oh and about aliasing, I didn't notice any.

OP added updated impressions and it sounds much better than the first post.

Adding some more recoil and actually having real Warzone matches instead of TDM will help a good deal. Being able to customize matches will also help a lot.

I really hope GG's next game is bigger in scope and they depart from the kill rooms and corridors.

I mean this game is called Killzone so it makes sense that it's full of savage kill zones. I think the open mission structure stuff hinted and shown @ E3 might be indicative of where they're turning their eyes for the new IP. But for now, kill rooms is what they know well.

exactly... I really am exited for the new I.P which is rumoured to be a RPG games

I'm really excited for shadow fall. As a 360 only gamer I always want a ps3 for KZ2 after I played it. I never got deep at all into it's mechanics but really loved the weight and tactile feel of the controls and power of the guns.

If GG's game is an RPG I hope to hell and back it's either Steampunk or Science Fiction.

well there was rumours way back
may not be the case anymore
that they are going for a ghost in shell type of game

seems that GG is really into old school manga/anime

Ok so they're not showing the rain map. The demo cycles to it, then resets.

The framerate seemed much more solid this time. Almost always 60 with occasional drops. I don't know what the deal was yesterday. I tried out a bunch of weapons, but most of the abilities appear to be locked for this demo. It was just the turret, shield, and revive bot, which you can use to remotely revive allies. The shield seems a little bit cheap. Most of the assault weapons take 5-6 bullets to kill, and the semiauto sniper took 3 bullets to kill.

Good to hear, you should update the op.

What happened to all the sparks and particle effects?Did the game get downgraded for 60 fps? I hate misleading trailers -_-

Post processing is missing as well

I really wouldnt worry about any negative impressions about next gen games at PAX. All of the launch games are really into crunch time to make Nov. launches. I doubt any dev spent much time trying to get these builds to be great. They are way more worried about having the final games ready for launch. I have no doubt that games like KZ:SF, Forza, and Ryse will all be much better come launch.

B-roll footage is clearly a different build. This is why I'm hesitant to shout out downgrade for any next gen game since we're getting tons of media at once from different builds with no indication of which is newer or more representative of the final game. That said, this footage doesn't even seem to have bullet casings leaving the guns so I'm going to guess that the game will look better than this, even at 60. Whether or not all the effects will be in is anyone's guess.

Lets hope GG delivers in the end. I got this pre ordered

Just got my hands on this today. I played a lot of both Killzone 2 and 3 and I can easily say this feels way more like KZ 2. The weighty feeling is back. Also noticed one of the perks was a recoil reduction. Recoil was not in the demo, but it will clearlybe in the final game. Repawn beacons for support class work vee similar to grenades in Kz2. The game looked good, but sharpness on tv's was a bit of an issue. Frame rate wise, I am not the best judge but it seemed to stay around a solid 30. I only noticed it dip down maybe once. The game wasn't hindered by it much though. Overall, I am still looking forward to getting Shadowfall at launch.

Nice! That's what I like to hear.

I wonder why sometimes when people play it it seems to be regularly at 60 and sometimes 30. Seems really odd.

Never understood why people have a problem with different gameplay. Have you ever tried playing an FPS before COD? Variety is more fun and i hope hip fire and ADS feels like KZ2 to make these people learn to control and aim their weapon rather just holding the trigger, and relying on the aim assist a-la-COD and all of it's emulators

Nice impressions.
The guns do have a lot of kickback when firing even though there's no recoil. This situation of adding in recoil so late is still strange but the visible kickback does give me hope you can't just hold down fire and pray to get kills.

My conclusion is that there are certain areas of the map, particularly inside, where the framerate drops to 30 and stays there. The judgement of framerate depends on where you spend most of your time spawning and playing.
