Would've loved to be at MS's HQ the day of the PS4 reveal and see them quaking in their boots.

Yes. We brought popcorn to our 3pm meeting http://say.ly/BFB5dvq

Well then. This meeting is running a little longer than expected

Announce a console without actually showing a console? That's one approach

Love to know what you thought of the presentation after you have a moment to think it over. I'll share my thoughts on the show this weekend

I love working in this industry. So much creativity and passion. Oh…and great games.

On the phone with @Stepto discussing the days news"

Wow actually, they really did have popcorn.

Launch games are like annual goals in companies. The employees dont wanna go to high because next time the goals are even more difficult. Same thing with games graphics. If you put too much now, become much more harder do upgrades in the next games.

Leadbetter, is that you?

Your point is inane...the fact that you are doubting a leak from a source that has a success rate of 90%, that has been leaking correct information since 05, and has been verified by every mod on this site speaks to willful ignorance or stubborn opposition to facts proven time again due to your own personal agenda of spreading fud.

90% (if that is true) it's not 100%.

Sorry, I'm free to choose what I believe and I don't consider cboat posts as a fact. If you considers, there's your problem.

so in other words, CBOAT is adding more confirmation to what we been speculating for awhile now.

Hopefully they wont upclock to the point where we start seeing "RROD 2.0" headlines come early 2014

TL;DR version.

Sony, Toshiba and IBM entered a partnership to develop what became the Cell. Due to an oversight / fuckup / whatever, the contract allowed IBM to use the R&D of the Cell to produce its own variation of the Cell. When they did when MS came asking for a new CPU for their new Xbox. The Xenon CPU is kind of a Cell Jr.

The team at IBM who were working on the Xenon were doing it in secret, while working along side the team that was working on the Cell.

As you can imagine, when Sony found out about this, they weren't too pleased!

Interesting, I never knew about this! I though the Nvidia fiasco was the only problem during PS3's development.

Its really mind boggling how the architect(s) of the XB1 didnt sit down and come to an agreement that the console should have enough power to make 1080p mandatory. I understand you dont want to force a developer to stick to a certain res when their visions might use other effects better but thats not whats going on here. You cant tell me Double Helix wanted a launch fighter running at 720p.

Who said they didn't? Xbone games aren't going to be sub-HD because the system isn't powerful enough to display games at 1080p, they're going to be sub-HD because the Xbone is so much weaker than the PS4. It's a way for them to try and close to graphical gap.

Can anyone explain how MS is behind Sony in nextgen hardware and software even though they stopped 360 first party game production about two years ago, while Sony released probably more first party game in the last few years than any other point in the gen?

They stopped trying to compete and instead worked on being as profitable as possible. This meant pushing Kinect and dropping almost all first party development except for their major franchises.

Yea, ever since Kinect came out my 360 pretty much died.

IMO, both Nintendo & Microsoft started out very good with both the Wii & the Xbox 360 from the start of their launches, but ever since 2011, they've been going nowhere but down, & they're still continuing to go down within both Wii U & Xbox One, while Sony, they've been struggling with the PS3 back at it's launch, but since 2009 (September 2009, especially), they've been going up, up, up, & are continuing to go up even further with the PS4.

It's kind of funny how these companies have all switched sides, LOL.

It's strange how the One still seems like such a disaster even after the DRM reversal. Has there ever been such a horrible lead up to a console launch?

Praise him. Do we know the PS4 1080p situation? I look forward to specifics about any up clocking, will we ever get those?

I'm not saying they didn't, what I'm saying they failed at their job and they failed us techie gamers who want a step up from last gen in resolution.

Because Sony has actually made the investments and built up studios to support their consoles?

I look forward to XBO fans joining their Wii U bretheren in telling us how it's all about the gameplay and experience next year. Silly things lile resolutions will have never been important to them soon.

Moving goalposts must be so exhausting.

Dreaming up TV/NFL integration and DRM schemes primarily, by the sound of things.

Oh man those posts were crazy. Definitely was not expecting this on a slow Sunday night.

It's all about maintaining balance.

But not everthing he leaks was legit, so not necessarily this new informations are (despite 1080p not a rule is pretty obvious, we don't need him for knowing that.)

Everyone believes what he leaks because a huge portion of those leaks, like 90%, are always true. That's why people trust him. You don't have to believe him, but this is why mostly everyone takes it as fact, for the most part.

It's pretty obvious now why a lot of the games aren't 1080p, yeah.

Oh shit...ok well this thread has done it for me.

I'm a big Microsoft fan and I have been pumped for the xbone since rumors first started. I've had my console preordered for months but I think I'm going to cancel. Investing around $700 in a launch console that has a strong possibility of be being a mess isn't isn't worth it. I've looked past every single problem the xbone has had this year but enough is enough. The risk of picking up an underpowered more expensive xbone at launch is too great.

I'll either get a ps4 at launch or get a wii u now and wait a few months to pick up a ps4 when infamous drops. If I do get an xbone it probably won't be until next holiday if they have fixed a lot of problems.

I'm not sure if I even like cboat but you're a fool if you think he has no insider knowledge and only holds some grudge against Microsoft/xbone. From one junior and loooong time lurker to all of the other juniors, you don't have to think he is infallible but please realize he has a very long history of giving gaf some great inside info.

Finally, thanks to everyone who is making some great points in this thread. So far it has been an excellent of what makes gaf such an extraordinary and wonderful place.

Let's not act like Sony fans aren't doing this as well any time a certain other platform gets mentioned.

Xbone owners will need the exclusives first. It's going to get interesting when Titan Fall for PS4 gets announced right around the time we start learning about what Sony Santa Monica and Naughty Dog have been up to for 1 of the 2 games they're working on.

It's probably more. I can think of very few times CBoaT has been confirmed wrong on something (especially since a lot of the stuff leaked is very long tail stuff). Most of which can easily be chalked up to the crazy shit that is next generation.

But you're not exactly a beacon of virtue by going against the grain here. It's kind of like you're swimming against the current, but you're in quicksand. So either way you're toast :p

And again, there's not really an agenda there. Dead Rising 3 is an awesome get, as is World of Tanks. There's been plenty of neutral news brought forth.

Hmmmmmm, if I'm interpreting everything correctly then that's a pretty bold claim and a very general statement. Judging what a console and developers are capable of before the console even releases is reaching a bit far for me. Who knows, maybe this will pan out to be completely true but right now it's impossible for anyone to know exactly how the developers will utilize the hardware in 1 - 8 years from now.

Don't worry, it's always better to wait anyways. In my eyes I still have a lot of great games that I haven't played this gen so no need to jump to next gen so early.

I'm not saying they didn't, what I'm saying they failed at their job.

Oh okay, well yeah, they did. But then a real games console clearly wasn't part of their plans at that point anyway, the lack of a low level graphics API, use of DDR3, focus on TV, etc. all shows that they wanted to make a multimedia box and games were just another part of it.

Regarding the Titanfall announcement, I expect it around E3 which will likely only be a couple of months after it has released. ND and/or SSM should be revealed at the VGAs.

The Sony First party support is currently a staggering amount of teams, we were discussing this in another thread and looking only at Sony's top tier (SSM,ND and PD) they have 6 teams so with a development time of 4 years per game that is a mega release every 8 months, it's quite astonishing.

Then was is Forza Motorsport 5 having no problems running a fabulous looking game at 1080p, 60 frames on the Xbox One? Is CBOAT sure Ryse and Dead Rising 3 aren't 1080p because maybe, like he stated once, the Xbox One is 6 months behind production?

Just because the parent company has massive reserves does not mean that the Xbox division can draw on it to spend. Since the Xbox hasn't proven to be a major net revenue generator, they might actually be looking to spend as little as possible. There are investors waiting in the wings that do not care for the Xbox division and want it gone.

I wish sega was still in the hardware business (or nintendo made a next gen console hardware wise), then I would be able to look forward to this scenario, instead of have to fear for a sony monopoly.

I can't imagine MS would let another rrod fiasco happen. That cost them a lot.

Thankfully we have stalwart crusaders who refuse to believe cboat and his huge laundry list of inaccuracies and lies, all three, and take the $500 chance for the rest of us.

Let's not act like Sony fans aren't doing this as well any time a certain other platform gets mentioned.

The thing is that everyone is right. The specs don't matter. The most powerful console has never won. Most of the world can't tell the difference between 720p/1080p (or 900p, forget about it). 30fps or 60fps?

And then you get into sales. Do they really matter? Is Justin Beiber a better songwriter than Simon and Garfunkle because he sold more records? Is the 3DS with it's low res screen and lower poly count inferior to the vita?

It's all semantics. If you like the games and system you like the games and system and that's all there really is to the entire thing. I think the vita is awesome. Like really awesome. I love the shit out of that thing. Is it selling well? Not at fucking all. Does MK on it look 1/4th as good as MK on the PS3? Nope. Does that make me like the vita less? Fuck no.

Like what you like. Who cares about all of this other shit. There's discussions to be had on places like this where we get into the details on what makes these machines tick or what is causing something to sell more than the other. That's fine. But to base your enjoyment of a device off of these conversations is absurd.

Seriously considering canceling this now.. Seeming like a worse and worse value proposition every day.

Oh and regarding the "more powerful console" talk, has the more powerful console ever been much cheaper than the weaker console before, because that's a huge factor here.

Xbone was design to not run games at a set resolution. They built in extra display planes because they knew the console would be under powered.

It works a lot like how Netflix works. When you are low on bw it downgrades the resolution. Will be the same way when you have a lot happening on screen. Xbone will change resolution.

Well, Ryse is confirmed 900p from Crytek. I played Dead Rising 3 at the Xbox One Tour, and I'm pretty sure it was 720. But there was a - staggering- amount of zombies.
