RUMOUR: Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts is 720p, PS4 version is 1080p?

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Call of Duty and Titanfall at 720p. Guess I won't ever buy a multi-platform party title on Xbox One. I'm tempted to outright cancel my Xbox One pre-order, but it's paid off and I'm sitting on quite a bit of Xbox cash and 2 years of Live Gold as well.

I won't get any multi-plat on the XBO either. Nevertheless, there will be still good games on the system. I am currently looking forward to Ryse and whatever Quantum Break will turn out to be.

Although I am, again and again, tempted to cancel my pre-order whenever I read another PR masterpiece from Microsoft. *g*

I am afraid that you'll notice it even more with games. Movies are usually smooth and have a constant framerate. Games on the other hand have content made out of polygons and you'll immedietly see the aliasing, dithering on tranceparencies, flicker on the edge of objects and of course the lower res textures. It is annoying and the image quality varies from okay to horrible depending on the game.

Thanks very much for the replies.

Does upscaling in games work similarly to video? The PS3 made some well transfered DVDs pretty watchable sometimes but it really depended on the source. Sometimes the upscaling made things worse.

No I'm not ignoring that. I never said that that fact wasn't true but also (as has been shown many times), news/buzz on the internet gets out very fast and certain views can change quickly.

Like I said (many times now), it's going to boil down to content. If a system has something that the other doesn't in terms of buzz worthy content then it will obviously spread over the internet.

The majority of people who will be next gen console owners won't get a next gen console until 2015 at the earliest. A lot of things can change in that period -- price drops, highly praised exclusive content, new systems features via updates, etc. All of that will also obviously play a role in what people say about the systems, both online and in person with other people.

I do admire you for being one of the few to come in here, since Hindle is mysteriously absent.

But I have to question how Microsoft is going to get better specs in a system update, because really that's the bottom line of this thread. If you're arguing about content, and system features, well we should see about that in a few weeks but it's really not relevant to this thread.

Actually that is not always correct. I game on our HDTV with Steam's big picture mode and on some games it is actually more beneficial to turn the resolution down to 720p or at least below 1080p and crank up some antialiasing and other effects, or at least get a super smooth framerate. But there are no motion artifacts or compression artifacts as you would get with a 720p low bitrate video. So from that perspective gaming sub 1080p is not as jarring of a difference as going from a Bluray to a youtube video.

In the end it will depend on the ability of your TV to upscale. So it is a very individual thing.

Well I know what I'm doing, I'm going to buy my xbox one. If all of this turns out to be true, I'm returning it and play my PS4 instead, wait for Titanfall to come out on PC.

Safe to assume Need for Speed Rivals will be 720p on the One?

Surely that has to be one of the other titles that's getting 720p'd

then you don't have 1:1 turned on, or you don't understand what I mean by sharpness, or your TV is attempting to scale with an algorithm that sucks ass.

my advice would be to get a decent TV and see what real 1:1 looks like, or alternatively live in ignorance with 900p being acceptable in 2013 (onwards until 2020?)

It is 1:1. No overscan or underscan. Maybe you should look at what a 960x540 image looks like versus 1600x900 with both scaled to 1920x1080.

And how am I living in ignorance saying 900p is acceptable. Never said that once. Get the fuck outta here with that bullshit.

Looks like next gen will the reverse of current gen for me. PS4 as main console and XBone for its exclusives. If only I could use the MS controller on every console!

If NBA 2k14 is also 720p ..... Fijhngcsdbg!

Oh man, then maybe I can finally convince my best friend to join me in getting a PS4. He won't be able to find one at launch but maybe soon after. I've been trying to get him to understand the tech differences but to no avail. He does understand the difference between 1080 and 720 and NBA2K is his favorite franchise so maybe he'll come around.
And before anyone asks why I'm trying to talk him out of getting the 180 (even though I'm getting one, heh) is because he keeps asking me which one to get. He only wants one console and he wants me to tell him the 180 will be fine, and it will be, but between that and a PS4 it's a no-brainer even before you bring price into it

Why doesn't Activision just come out and say the resolution for both the consoles.

Because there is a deep dark secret in the industry and if the truth was reveal, MS would get very pissed off because it would materially affect pre-orders for their console.

They can't hold back the truth forever. And to be honest. I can see a lot of really pissed off Xbox fans because they will end up with a console that isn't nearly as strong as it needs to be to compete. This is going to back fire on MS is a big way.

Do you really see the games being that good? I don't.

Elaborate on what you mean here,.......
I think games will be THAT good or I wouldn't be a gamer.

Will PS4 games be that good? I am bargaining so, I'm going to buy one.
Will Xbox One games be "that" good? Presumably some Xbox One games will be really fucking good - Xbox One fans will buy them.

A small, vocal minority will miss out on some Xbox games purely because of obscure technical reasons. I personally will miss out on Xbox One games because for the most part I probably won't like what comes to the platform

On a PC with options you have multiple methods to obtaining a better image. But I assumed (maybe foolishly), he was referring to Ghosts on a PS4 versus a XBO. The XBO version isn't going to be 720p but with pristine SSAA to make up the difference.

People keep coming back to this "nobody will care" talking point, but they're missing the real reason behind the controversy.

The actual issue here is that the xbone could possibly be serving up 720p versions of multiplats that PS4 can produce at 1080p, and for quite some time. If, and it's still an if, xbone is as underpowered enough to cause this CoD situation then what we're trying to say is that it could speak to what we'll be seeing all generation.

Yes, this is just one launch game, but cboat hasn't been wrong, and he says more 720p xbone games are coming. So with so many people on GAF over the years saying how the 360 versions of most multiplats looking and performing obviously better than the PS3 versions, and how that's the reason they buy the 360 version even though they own both consoles, then it sounds to me like yes, it does matter to people.

Digital Foundry might have some sway too, but who knows. Just saying that the gap might be wider than some think is all, and if the gap didn't matter then you wouldn't be commenting on it in the first place.

Maybe it's safe to assume all third party titles on xbox one will be 720p and rather be surprised when they aren't?

Not if the One is scaling

The original question was regarding using a PC hooked up to a big screen TV. So I assumed no in between scalers, otherwise, some receivers also scale, and better than some TVs, so it would vary even more as to what you see int he end.

The thing that makes news like this sting comes down to money, cheddar, bills. If the Xbox One was marketed as a good, modest upgrade to the Xbox 360, and was sold in non Kinect bundles for $350 or $300, underwhelming technical issues wouldn't make splashes.

It's incredibly challenging to even consider the Xbox One over the PS4 due to these price differences. I also value third party software more than exclusive software, my favorite games this gen wern't exclusives. So the argument that the Xbox One is the savior of videogame software and the PS4 looks underwhelming software wise isn't a narrative I agree with.

When a console is more development friendly, powerful, and cheaper for the consumer, I'm not going to consider the alternative that's conflicted developmentally, less powerful, and more expensive for the consumer.
