I think they're all being printed at this point.

Knack has been spotted on shelves.

All is good.

Games have nothing to do with the console being ready. That's a developer problem. Killzone and Knack are fine. Killzone is even being printed now.
So if you have the current scoop with whats going on with Sony and this launch, tell us what this PS4 review event taking place 3 days before the console launches in a controlled environment is all about? I'm not accusing anybody of anything and I suspect Microsoft might do the same thing but whats the reasoning behind that?

How could they fuck this up? All they had to do was literally take the 360 method and put it in XBO, copy-and-paste, easiest shortcut ever.

I'm more interested in seeing if the OS crashes are true tho.

MS have been on their back-foot ever since February when Sony came out much stronger and quicker than expected. This is probably why their problems are so similar to what Sony faced with the PS3 after 360 was launched.

Platform launches are tricky and complex things at the best of times, but when you find yourself chasing a deadline that's been set by your competition things get an awful lot more dicey.

The reality I suspect is that long-term the problems will be largely get ironed out, but the first few months may well be very rough and give one party a significant headstart regarding mindshare.

Everyone always praises J Allard as the champion for gaming at MS but let's not forget, he sat right there and let MS execs put out faulty hardware for the sake of beating Sony to market. Same sins different decade.

I'm sure Stevie had his way and Allard couldn't fight him and Moore.

Well this was always MS' endgame. So to see the media focus come to bear isn't too surprising. There is a reason Allard left. Stopping a corporation that is intent on overtaking Google and Apple is no easy feat. We all love Allard's passion and believe there may have been some improvement, but this mess started with Balmer. The Xbox One is the company's answer to every competitor. Sadly, it competes poorly with all of them.

That is true - it does compete poorly. It is sad that Allard left. I don't doubt that media was their target but Allard could have still kept the focus on gaming. As long as the gamers were happy they could put in all of the media they want. They just had to look at the success of the 360 and do more of the same. Mattrick was a 'Yes Man' to Steve and did not defend the original vision of the Xbox.

So only one console is being rushed? Heh, okay. How can I create equivalence when the equivalence is already (blatantly) there?

Anyway, I expected OS issues at launch on both systems before they were even revealed/announced. That's simply tech these days.

All I did was try to understand why this is more "controversial" than the typical issues at launch. That's all.

to be fair... "typical issues" at launch I would think most believe to be annoying. queue times, bugs that don't work how they should and need workarounds, speed, etc.

getting dropped (frequently from the sounds of it) from multi-player or chat isn't "growing pains". That is the equivalent of Star Wars Galaxies and their frequent fucking rollbacks during launch losing you anywhere from 15-120 minutes of progress. There are growing pains, and then there are broken aspects to the point of it being unenjoyable.

If this is as broken as numerous (including devs) are saying, that is the latter, not the former.

Exactly --"if true". Panicing at this point would be a waste of time if everything gets sorted out at launch.

The main reason I'm getting an Xbox One is due to it having games I'm interested in. Those should work at launch right? Or is there a new rumor that I missed? (haha)

Define "games working"

If XBL connectivity and party dropout issues are intergal to your games experience, then perhaps you would consider games "not working"

I really hope MS either fixes this for launch or soon after because, jokes aside, the Xbox is a major, major part of the gaming landscape regardless if you are a fan or not (I am a PS fanboy who is fortunate enough to have the means to buy all three next gen consoles and plan to do so)

If Xbone crashes and burns this will have an overall damaging effect on our hobby even if you hate Xbox.......even the ha8rz should want this to be resolved as quickly as possible :(

i've been begging for over 5 years.
Can I get a recap for those who went to bed at around 1:30am EST?

Last I saw was our hero Mort rambling somewhat coherently about getting a ton of emails and comments that he hasn't read yet.

I'm starting to think that on the Sony side of things ( holding review units back till 2 days before ) has a lot to do with the system not being ready for review until the last moment.

This day one software patch will still be in development, it's obvious they installed a bare bones OS install on manufacturing knowing full well they could work on all the features right up until launch, in which case now they will be ironing out bugs with 1.50.

I'd imagine they don't really want to have a controlled review environment, but they kind of have to because of work still going on right up till launch.. I don't think they have anything to worry about, we'll just see the usual glitches day 1.

This stuff about Microsoft sounds scary. But I fail to see any concrete evidence of this? Devs have been using dev kits of months, surely they have been testing OS level features such as network connectivity and voice comms, sounds a bit fishy to me.

Dude, its a 300 hundred MEGAbyte patch. That's barely enough for your average web application, let alone an entire OS. Cut this line of bullshit, its nothing more than a bunch of bug fixes to account for changes to the PSN between pre-release and launch. Zero day patches are the norm for large software/hardware launches, a broken UI weeks before launch is not.

My guess is that this problem will be worked out sooner than later. They really have no choice but to spend every possible second attempting to resolve this. MS has the manpower to get it done, so it'll likely happen. If this isn't fixed, or at least substantially resolved, oh boy!

Oh boy=! good things

Having been in software development all my life I can tell you just throwing manpower at the problem is not an answer. (Mythical Man Month anyone?)

You have to be tactical if you are faced with a lot of loose ends and problems. Hypothetically if there are a lot of problems MS is facing in getting their software ready you have to work on the items that really matter day one and roll out other features incrementally. And you put the right experts on each problem...not just throw manpower at it. That's a recipe for disaster and I'm sure MS knows that. If there truly are major problems what you'll see is certain functionality turned off until its ready for prime time.

Exactly. BF4 is my most anticipated launch title. If I picked that up X1 and I couldn't finish a 30 min game because of crashes I would be extremely upset.

If you're referring to the NY celebration, then that's before launch. They're going to have to go there if they want to get early access, or wait for it to launch, go buy a PS4 and then review it. Who knows, maybe they give the journalists in attendance a free PS4 as a bribe? Sweeten them up a little. Know what I mean? Huh? Eh?

If this is the problem instead of rrod, I'll be happy...

he also generally only leaks stuff that is pretty darn obvious

Lol, why don't you take a moment read back through some of CBOAT's older leaks & check the dates, Some of the 360 leaks were "pretty darn obvious"

NOT

I have a marketing degree and you're wrong.

didn't know people couldn't check the OS while playing the demo, MS need to do something about this news and do it fast if what Phil Spencer say is true then prove that this news is wrong (if it's wrong).

Sorry, Xbox One isn't Miley Cyrus. It isn't an idea or a celebrity where any publicity is good publicity. Its a tangible piece of consumer electronics equipment that is expected to have certain levels of functionality and performance.

It'll still sell out. People will still buy it, but the disappointment and frustration factor at launch will be high. And this will translate to negative word of mouth and thats not what you want right out of the gate when you have a competing box that is cheaper and better performing. Its kind of the exact opposite effect of what happened with the 360. 360 was built on word of mouth. Over the years, the number 1 answer on this forum, and many others, as to why you bought an Xbox 360, was ...."because I want to play with all of my friends and thats what they are playing".

Microsoft will get the shit sorted out, but it will take a while. Hopefully for them, they can mitigate or hide the damage that will be caused by several months of gamer frustration.
If Microsoft can survive and come out on damn near the top if not in top despite having essentially a 100% failure rate on their consoles for well over a year, they will be fine with something as minor as this really is.

While entire PS3 firmware weights a 200MB package, how would you say a 300MB "Patch" is too small for PS4 main feature ?

I don't think we'll ever see a console again without day 1 update. The PlayStation 3 even got one. US and Japan had 1.10 and Europe had 1.60 for firmware updates on launch day. The Xbox 360 also had one IIRC.

Yeah, true, a disappointing reality. As an internet user its hard to imagine the poor sods without it, or unreliable connections. Its selfish but that download is nothing to me now, but I only recently got fibre. Updates like that used to kill me. I always wonder what the adoption rate for things like that are. So a lot of people are out there having to deal with buggy day 1 systems.

My first day 1 console, never done it before but no idea why I have started now considering how things are going and the lack of information out there. Just hyped due to such a long generation I guess. Fingers crossed it goes well for everyone, no one wants to open the box they have been anticipating to find a turd sandwich inside.

Games have nothing to do with the console being ready. That's a developer problem. Killzone and Knack are fine. Killzone is even being printed now.

I understand that generally but at the start of a console's life do the dev tools not come into play? Surely if this rumour is true and things like chat and connectivity code is junk, how are devs supposed to test it out properly? Must impact game development if they are constantly releasing updates to resolve bugs to devs. Same with PS4, delays to a couple of games might indicate some kind of development issues? Just speculating obviously and curious about any answers. They were both left so late to delay, makes me wonder.

Thanks again

As a somewhat expert in health/medicine I believe it's time to take them meds, homie. Bengal tigers don't flinch. They roam with majesty and grace because of their superiority.

The only reason they're not extinct is that a bunch of hippies decided to save them.

Must be a strange feeling for Cerny. His game team is probably popping up the sake bottles and celebrating, yet there is still one more big thing for him, to which he can't celebrate yet till launch.

I can't imagine working on something for so many years and what the feeling would be when it is finally on a shelf. Must be very surreal.

Um yes. Have you seen the size of some phone OS lately. I've seen several 300mb updates that add simple features and fix other issues. Comparing the patch to the PS3 OS is ridiculous. That thing originated 7 years ago. Things have changed

Man, I like Yoshida's idea of showing the PS4 UI at the beginning of their Gamescom conference even more:

Shu's PS4 had to be in suspend mode, if you notice when he starts playing Shadow Fall he never chose a class. Unless it automatically chooses a class for you.

Being optimistic is what makes me look younger than my actual age. It's a pretty good trait.

I hope the current issues with both consoles get sorted out by launch (whatever they may be).

I think people are needlessly worrying about stuff they have no control over. We're customers. It's not our jobs to worry about these things. And if it is a mess, we can just return the system.

I don't get the crazy concern. We're not MS employees or stockholders--I speak for myself here.

And that day 1 update is a fair old beast for something going well.
There isn't a network connected device with embedded OS that doesn't do a day 1 check for OS/firmware updates, and more than a few actually do have day 1 updates to download and install. That's the world consoles live in now.

Not sure what your getting at.. What I said is what's happened. Its got a bare-bones OS on at retail. 1.50 would have been put on if it was ready for the machines going in production.

So in Gamescom PS4 has suspend mode in mind, but at launch this feature will be cut due to verification failure.

Major and Penello tried to answer questions only to be thrown shit at. The best choice of action is just to let GAF be GAF (nobody will buy Kinect, Wii U is the greatest thing ever, nobody will buy Kinect again) and answer on launch day. The system will work flawless as advertised and slowly people will realize they've been played hard by the marketing shills they call insiders. GAF is so easy to manipulate, of course marketing on both sides uses that. Isn't it strangely convenient that for every good MS news there is a new bomb hanging over X1? I have never experienced such a campaign to desperately get people to not buy a console. I mean I'm getting an X1 but why should I care what you get?

And if you look closely you see the same BS in every one of the so called insiders posts. Things are incredibad for X1 ... But they might just work it out in time. Resolution is 720p but they are working on it. ESRAM has issues bzt they might make it work. There are yield issues but that could change come launch. The OS and Xbox Live are having huge issues but they have some time left. It's their insurance. To keep their account alive. It's moronic. You either have info and stand behind it with your credibility or you don't. The way it currently works here some can spread the most ridiculous BS and get away with it.

"I heard PS4 will be delayed to 2014 because the system runs too hot with release code and constantly shuts down. Sony is hard at work finding a solution, but they might still make it. Doesn't look good though."

See how that works? If you see the infamous but, be sceptical.
I'm observing this kind of behavior in the message board. I always ask myself why they aren't banned, yet? I wonder if NeoGAF tolerate this much of negativity and misinformation? Why and for whom?
