Respawn: EA made Titanfall deal, only for one game, will work on PS4 later

Well that stinks, I knew it would be a while but I figured PS4 owners would get this game next fall/holiday sometime. Now I'm just never going to play it unless the PC version goes on sale. Which means waiting for a sale on Origin for a game that's less than 3 years old.

So basically around 2016 I should be able to get this for $40 on Origin since there's no way in hell it's coming to Steam.

It will be ironic as hell if vast majority of TitanFall copies will be sold on PC or X360, with X1 trailing somewhere behind.

Man, if Titanfall was a one year exclusive (as exclusive as you can be with 3 out of 5 platforms) does it really make sense to pay what was very likely a hefty sum AND piss off the dev just to be able to claim it as a "true exclusive" over "exclusive*?

Damn, that sucks. Given that he just got the news, I wonder how much effort his studio has spent on the investigation of a PS4 port for Titanfall. Granted, as it's before launch even on its target console, I'm guessing its not much, but any engineering effort lost for a company as new as Respawn has got to suck.

I hope Titanfall does well. I used to live and breathe FPS games, and I'm happy to see some of the mechanics I liked from previous franches (wall jumping, especially) re-emerge.

Honestly though, I hope the PC version blows the other versions out of the water. Until someone figures out how to bring up the skill cap for controllers, the PC will still be the platform of choice for FPS games.

After this I am considering not to buy any EA games on PS4.
Are you considering not to buy any Capcom games on XB1 because of Deep Down?
You'd think EA would be a little more appreciative of Sony since Madden and Fifa on PS2 probably built most of those offices and boardrooms where these crappy deals go down.
Wow! This is fun. Madden and FIFA performed well on Genesis and SNES. That didn't turn in to anything later on for Sega and Nintendo.

Respawn probably assumed that EA would want it to go to PS4 and signed their agreement expecting that would be how it goes.

It didn't go that way.

At the end of the day, Respawn still owns the IP and all this salt is silly.

If Respawn was so concerned, they would have insisted on a different deal.

This isn't like how Activision screwed IW, it isn't a huge deal, and everybody should just fucking relax. Respawn still owns their fucking IP, they still own their fucking company, and in the long run they can do whatever they want. Get over it, babies.

You need to look up the definition of being salty.

Not supporting a publisher's shitty practices is not what i'd describe as salty.

This is what I meant about 'salty' being a meme. Too many people use the slang yet don't know what the fuck it means.

I'd imagine if this becomes a continuing problem Respawn will just bounce like they did with Medal of Honor then Call of Duty.

Also, another prime example of using 'salty' wrong.

You realize the only person who doesn't sound relaxed is you?

It isn't like that AT ALL, and you obviously are misinformed.

They sold IW to Activision, including the whole CoD/MW intellectual property. They have done nothing of the sort with Respawn or witth TitanFall.

There are a lot of salty people in this thread, and I know how to use 'salty'. There are salty, salty people in this thread making false equivalencies. They are ignorant. They are not stupid, they are just fucking ignorant.

Respawn is going to be just fine. They are not in an Infinity Ward situation in any way.

Sony co-developed the Phanta Rei engine with Capcom being used with the game, so that is slightly different. TitanFall afaik is using Source engine.
This game was never announced for PS4 in the first place regardless. It seems people are only making such a fuss because they're hyped for the game and it won't be coming to their console of choice after all. Given the general sentiment here, I can't help but imagine if it was the other way round the same posters would be praising Sony for their business sense.

There's going to be a ton of great games on both platforms and peeps need to realise that the only way to play them all is to buy both platforms. Both companies will be doing deals like this in the first couple of years of the generation when the landscape is so competitive.

Anyone find out of Respawn is getting any money from the deal other than their usual percentage of revenue?

I mean, the way it's looking, PS4 is going to have a strong lead in userbase at launch, which should follow into the next year. Kind of a shame to miss out on that due to backroom deals?

Sounds like EA, yet again, bet on the wrong horse.

Want to drop a few more "fucks" over people being bothered about a highly anticipated title being bought away from a platform they'd prefer to play it on?

Port beggars who expect every game they like to be on every platform they like will always, always be disappointed.

EDIT: I said "fuck" once in the post you quoted.

It's coming to 360 and PC too, and you can bet MS will throw a ton of money at marketing it.

Again, this has never been announced for PS4, ever.

No one knows and it will likely never come out. Unless for some reason there's a lawsuit.

Doesn't matter that there was no announcement. The fact that it was previously labeled a launch exclusive rather than just an exclusive means it was planned to be released at some point to a competing console. It's not likely that was going to be the Wii U.

Your previous post had plenty more "fucks" about the same topic. Yeah and people are free to be disappointed that a deal was struck to keep the game off the console they want to play it on. What's the problem?

This. Concur. The reason I have been going multi-platform since the regular Xbox and PS2.

Port beggars suck. At the end of the day you have to buy all platforms to play all games.

This never, ever changes.

Never.

Lol. SCE is helping Capcom with the new engine. Titanfall is using Source engine. MS is just straight up moneyhatting the game (old school style) because they lack a decent first party and the Xbox one's situation is not looking too good relative to the PS4's.

They suck because they don't want to or can't afford to buy every system? They suck because they want a game but don't have the means to play it due to backdoor business deals? They suck because they say how much it disappoints them in isolated threads about the news about how they can't play it on the platform they want?

I think you gotta recognize that you're making a mountain out of a molehill here.

They suck because it isn't productive and it isn't realistic.

It's a childish view.

FWIF I have a PS4 preorder only and I may never, ever play TF against other console players unless I buy an XB1.

But I'm not going to be a bitch about it because I'm an adult.

Engine is complete, I expect Respawn to be no different from Activision, Titanfall every year so PS4 only owners won't have to wait long...

MS is probably helping a lot with advertising/marketing of titanfall...

Titanfall being a PS4 title is unrealistic?

You know what, I think you've said enough. Enjoy your mountain.

Sadly, this is how the game is played. Every console company will do its best to secure exclusives for its platform in order to entice buyers. EA saw an opportunity to secure a (probably) large sum of money and Titanfall got a hell of a lot of promotion for being X1 exclusive. Frankly, I see no reason for this gamer outrage.

Sounds like EA, yet again, bet on the wrong horse.

If standing around while MS backs a few truckloads of money to the doorstep is betting on the wrong horse, I would like to bet on the wrong horse every day.

This was purely a business decision, the rest of EA is still operating at status quo and producing games for both PS4 and Xbone.

What's the last exclusive Sony has bought? Seems like Sony is more interested in building internal game studios. They've done their share of exclusive content marketing, but I can't remember the last Playstation title that smelled of "this was bought to be an exclusive".

Note that publishing isn't the same thing .

Expecting every title to be available on every platform is always, always unrealistic.

Do you understand that there are people crying in this thread not even about that, but claiming that Respawn got screwed by EA like IW got screwed by Activision? Do you understand that it's a total false equivalency because Respawn still owns their IP and they still own their own fucking company?

Forgetting all the ownership, it's still pointless to cry about all the titles you like not appearing on all platforms, you know that, right? It's just crybaby port begging from people that don't understand the business world.

It is the same thing in practice, isn't it? Does it matter if the money goes directly to pay the developer's salaries or the necessary marketing for the game?

At the end of the day, it's about keeping titles from competing platforms. It's a different way of going about it, but the result is the same.

If you don't like deals that developers make, blame the developers. They have choices. They have options.

No, it's not the same. Let's take LittleBigPlanet for example. MM was likely pitching the game around as a small company. Sony liked the idea and asked them to work under Sony. Now the studio has all of the perks that come with Sony. This is basically what Respawn did with EA. Microsoft swooping in and saying "hey here's some money to not release it on PS4" in no way improves their game library for their audience. It just hurts another platform. Instead, those millions could have been out into another great game so Xbox One owners could buy both Titanfall and Cool Game X. I'd rather MS spend their money buying small companies like Bungie and growing them into bigger studios than paying already well-funded publishers millions to just keep their product off other consoles.

I'm not interested in any title that doesn't have a single player component whatsoever. Regardless who it's made by.

I'm seeing this quite often at the moment. But I personally can't stand games with a 'tacked-on' single player. Most if not all Battlefield games would be better without single player cf. early PC releases. Plough those resources into MP and have it as perfect as possible by release, full-to-bursting with features. I'd happily buy a MP only game.

In the same vein, I love SP games like TLoU, but haven't touched the MP. I don't think it needs it. But I prefer the social experience of playing with my friends. I would be termed by Titanfall if it wasn't an exclusive. C'est la vie.
