AC4 on PS4 renders at 900p, future update will boost to native 1080p

In an update on the UbiBlog, Ubisoft communications manager Gary Steinman explained that “players will need to download a title update (available shortly after release) to enjoy the full 1080p native resolution.

“Even without the title update, the game is undeniably stunning on next-gen consoles. Indeed, as Associate Producer Sylvain Trottier suggests, some players might not even be able to tell the difference. That’s because the game, as shipped, is being rendered on next-gen at a resolution that’s very close to 1080p (900p, if you’re curious), and the upscaling process barely adjusts the image.”

“If it's running at 720p vs 1080p you're going to notice the difference by far,” Trottier explains. “But if it's set at a resolution that's very close, where most of the pixels are already there in internal processing, most people won't see any difference.”

Steinman explains that the retail version shipped at 900p in order for the development team to “deliver a visually brilliant game at a steady 30 frames per second... Finishing the game at 900p gave the development team the extra room in terms of the GPU and CPU usage to ensure the framerate never dips below 30 frames per second.

“The team then used the time between the ship date and the release to focus on a title update that could deliver native 1080p resolution on the PS4.”

The update also introduces a “brand-new anti-aliasing technique” that will offer “an even cleaner, clearer and more brilliant moving image”.

Hopefully this is just for launch games because it sets a bad precedent. So anyone without online is stuck at whatever crappy resolution the game was shipped at? No good.

I want this game for back and forth remote play and the ps4 should look better than my gtx 570, but I'm gonna hold off til they release this patch.

Who would have thought a pirate game would have contained patches.

Crap, now I don't know if I should start playing it or wait for the patch. Wish they would at least give us an idea on when it's coming...

Most likely something thats being done to meet the launch target.

This is too funny. I guess they are all shipping at the xbone resolutions and patching in the higher res later. This better only be for launch games.

I feel sorry for those who aren't connecting their consoles to the internet this gen.

Seems like patches are going to become even more prevalent.

This. I am truly starting to believe Infinity Ward and Ubisoft were going for parity, for whatever reason... good they decided not too.

Otherwise... what shit ports.

So 900p is the feel of 1080p?

Resolution wizards, what's the comparison of number of pixels for 720p v. 900p v. 1080p?

Yeah the only thing I can think of is development for this game started on current gen ... slowly moved over to next gen and the last thing they are changing is the resolutions?

That is the only thing I can come up with. And they just ran out of time to be able to go into the debug menu and change resolution to 1080p and then optimize.

This is why cross-gen gaming needs to end pretty fast this generation. We have had 7-8 years of 360/PS3. I do not want 16 months of held back gaming because devs have to spend a bunch of time on last generation ports when the architecture last generation is such a pain in the arse.

this explains why the difference between the PS4 version and the Wii U version wasn't as obvious as it should have been when I was watching the IGN comparison video earlier.

sliding this to the bottom of the 'play pile' until the patch comes out. I'll try it out a bit, but with other stuff to play I can wait to get heavily into it.

More like two years.

Ubisoft have confirmed they aren't releasing cross-gen games after 2015.

this seems like a trend, was this done on purpose with the thought that people wouldn't notice/care? I'm having a hard time trying to understand why they just wouldn't ship the game at 1080p, and then just shipping out a patch shortly after release.

EDIT: to clarify i read the quote i'm just not sure i quite believe it

well, considering that they are doing it this fast means it is not complicated and probably due to some issues/bugs rather than anything else

So 900p is the feel of 1080p?

Resolution wizards, what's the comparison of number of pixels for 720p v. 900p v. 1080p?

720p = 1280x720 = 921,600 pixels
900p = 1600x900 = 1,440,000 pixels (56% more than 720p)
1080p = 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels (125% more than 720p, 44% more than 900p)

Conventional wisdom would guess 720p currently with patch to 900p on Xbone.

But then he wouldn't have said this:

“If it's running at 720p vs 1080p you're going to notice the difference by far,” Trottier explains. “But if it's set at a resolution that's very close, where most of the pixels are already there in internal processing, most people won't see any difference.”

Which was a nice dig at the competition IMO. No way they would ship at 720p now.

I guess they felt resolution would be less noticeable then shoddy performance.
