PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

Posted this in the other thread but guess it goes here:

I updated the firmware and then created my profile (signed into my US PSN account, went through who can see your name/activities) then got PLEASE WAIT and it's been stuck on that for 10 mins and hitting back doesn't do anything.

Should I just hard reset the system right now? Guessing PSN went up and let me in and then went down while creating my user account and it's looking to connect but can't.

Welp, my unit is DOA. I'm angry since I ordered this from Amazon and I'll have to deal with Sony Support. I had bad luck with the 360 but this one seals the deal for no more first year hardware :p

Why do you have to deal with Sony Support? Send it back and buy one again later on.

OT: Stuck setting up my account settings. I entered in my information, it started asking about Real name ID etc. And its stuck on Please wait when it asked me if I wanted Friends/Family to view my video activited. I said no, and its just rotation please wait. Whats the deal?

So, one thing I noticed is that booting into Safe Mode via holding the power button takes longer than specified. I held my power button until the second beep and kept holding it until the machine powered off, then booted it up.

Conclusion: I have to send the unit back to Sony. Repair estimated to be 2 weeks.

Edit: Good thing my customer rep sounded really cute and had a good personality. Made the process much less of a headache.

you can't put a price on sparks
is there a reason you guys are sending it to sony instead of exchanging for another piece of hardware entirely where you bought it?

I'm sure as hell not using their HDMI cable when I have known working ones already.

Yea, I've had no problems with my PS4 today. I've been using my own Amazon branded HDMI-to-DVI cable and it's working great.

Also using an Amazon branded Optical Digital cable for the audio and that works great too.

I highly recommend Amazon's branded A/V cables. My PS4 has been working non-stop since 1pm Est this afternoon. No issues on my end.

PSN was running fine earlier today. Of course night came and now millions of people are crashing their servers.

It's not easy to get things back to amazon unfortunately.

I'm actually using a Microsoft 360 hdmi cable lol

So after spamming Sony's Facebook page and their twitter I finally got a response. They are going to overnight me a box to get this all sorted. No repair just a straight up replacement.

This is clearly an internal issue. All this talk about HDMI has gotten nowhere. Other than Kotaku I do not know anyone else who has been successful in fixing their system by a similar method.

On a side note there are reports of people who live near Sony Stores and who purchased their consoles elsewhere being successful in doing a direct exchange there in person. I read posts from people who bought theirs from Amazon and Gamestop thus far.

Many people got their's from amazon. Even if you didn't, good luck finding a store that has any available to give you. Sony or refund is typically your only option.

And you think everybody that did not get a faulty one is going on there reviewing it?

It is like I have hurt somebodies feeling.

You have put my answer out of its context. As you have seen I have answered the guy that had stated the 50% failure rate claim based on Amazon.com. I just wanted to show that this claim is not valid based on the numbers/ratings there. I was definitely not saying the failure rate IS 25% because the numbers are indeed not representative.

Or you guys could stop arguing about stupid shit and stay focused on the topic of this thread which is for people with hardware issues.

Sigh.

Stuck on trying to set up privacy stuff. System just says please wait. I can press X/O, they make a sound but it does nothing. Hitting the PS Button puts a sign in the upper right hand window. Can I safely restart the system somehow or what? Is this because PSN is down?

This thread is making me a little nervous since i'm importing from the US, and it will arrive on monday to my country. I just really hope that i'm not part of that 0.04%.

To get a more accurate defect percentage we could poll just gaf members with a ps4.
Yea, but there are idiot MS fanboys who will claim a faulty PS4 just to pour it on.

Only Sony can truly know, based on their CS inquiries. And even then, you can't trust a company to reveal honest failure rate figures on its own devices.

Didn't Amazon cut ties with Nintendo over how many faulty 3DS units were sent back to them? I wonder if this will affect their relationship with Sony?

I was stuck like that for 20 mins. Just hold the home button until the menu screen comes up then turn the PS4 off and back on. Maybe it's a coincidence but I set my PS4 into standby then when it rebooted my home phone line died and the PS4 won't log into the internet. (Even though I'm using the same internet to post this) :/

Yep, happened twice now. If I go into standby then boot up I can't connect to the internet, but if I shut down and boot up I can.

Man, my colleague at work's was fucked - I come home and my roommate's is dead also, different issue. It must be a shitty fan, because it powers up then shuts off quickly and it's SILENT. As in no fan going. Fucking blows - she got hers from Amazon and doesn't want to wait around, but has no options.

Sony online support chat crashes every time I get closed to getting an agent. Been on hold for 30 minutes on the phone already. This is just awful.

This thread genuinely has me worried, I'm sitting here with my ps4 still unopened seriously considering flipping it on ebay and waiting few months till sony gets this fixed.

It certainly seems like most of the issues have something to do with updates to both games and firmware. As a precaution I'm going to disable auto upates till all this is cleared up and I'd suggest everybody else does the same.

So how exactly do I tell whether it's an HDMI issue or something else? I assume with the HDMI issue I'll get no output at all which means it's not that since I can get into safe mode, correct?

Thankfully I'm not having an out and out hardware failure, but I'm having a weird HDMI handshake issue.

If I switch inputs away from my PS4, I don't get a signal when I switch back. Even turning my tv off and then back on doesn't work.

This occurs using both an Amazon and a Monoprice HDMI cable. Hopefully it's just firmware issue.

Ah screw it, nothing works...Once get get the Blue Line Of Death all hope is lost...Guess I can hope to play a new PS4 next month...? *Sniff*

Can you describe exactly how you got safe mode working? You heard 2 beeps? But it turned off?

Mine only does one beep and then turns off

Hold down the button and see if you can get safe mode to work. If you can boot into safe mode, it's likely a solvable problem. If not, you need to get a new unit.

My ps3 does the same thing.

Bad hard drive in mine. Constantly locked up even after multiple wipes and reinstalls and trying everything the internet had to fix a fragmented hard drive. I dropped my 320gb hard drive in from my ps3 and it has been working flawlessly. Spent 3 hours on sony support, mostly on hold and told them the situation and they refused to just replace the hard drive. Said I had to send the whole console. I refused. Just going to buy a new hard drive a little earlier than I planned a guess. Absolutely infuriating though to have this happen and for their support to treat me like I am a complete idiot.

so i just got an email from the console I sold to a dude on Ebay.. He said his Amazon console is borked... he is on hold with Sony....

My console arrived, but I am on a biz trip.... Worried.... should I just wait a few days for a new firmware?

Thankfully mines all good. Played it for a couple hours today and no problems so far.

Definitely getting the PSN warranty after this though.

I feel bad for all those who are having problems, but that's to be expected with a new console launch. Hopefully Sony does something to repay you guys (I would think a free extended warranty would be good lol).

PS4 is like sold out every where I live. Been on hold for an hour now, have tried several times to safe boot, several different displays, different HDMI cables, fucking dead ass paperweight. I think I'm gonna return all PS4 shit and just wait a year honestly :(. We'll see how Sony Support responds before that decision :p

I got to safe mode, but don't know what to do from there. Do I need to call Sony?
