PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

hongfujin yantai china september 2013. Shipped from Amazon

LoL - oh, to have won by drawing this bad batch of PS4s.....

Has anyone received a console not from hongfujin yantai china?

My friend just pulled the trigger on a BF4 bundle on Amazon, hopefully it'll be ok.

Been on hold to get one of my ps4's repaired for 2hrs 18mins 50secs. #WOW

I just hit the two hour mark myself.

I had also tried to do an online "Chat" with Sony customer support, and was entered in their queue, but then their system booted me and the 35 folks in front of me after ten minutes.

Ah wait. Is there any other way to get audio with a setup of a ps4, a monitor that only has dvi and vga inputs, and stereo headphones/speakers? I was going to use the DS4's audio out but the sound quality is awful.

Mine came from hongfujin yantai china (september) and has been used for at least 10 hours today, aside from the green screen crash during warframe update no issues, maybe I'm lucky but something tells me its just a matter of time..

I tried the vertical orientation trick that people were using to deal with the eject loop, and that fixed the disc insertion problem (I can actually put discs in now). However, the PS4 never tries to read them. The disc drive doesn't spin up, and nothing shows up in the menu for the game I insert. I've tried this with three different games now. I'd call up support but they close in 20 minutes anyway; guess I'll try tomorrow.

(I *really* hope I don't have to send my system back to Sony and wait a week...)

Yes their chat system is a big fail, kicked me twice.

They finally answered at the 2:35 mark. Just for a 3 minute convo.

I'm holding off calling in a Sony coffin or a Amazon refund (unless I can get them to upgrade me to a bundle)

Hopefully Sony will offer some sort of apology incentive. Who knows?

I will call Sony tomorrow to report my DOA unit. nearly 10PM here and don't want to be n the phone all night

See mine would have been 3 minutes but it took the guy 5 minutes to respond to shit. It's downright annoying that what should be that short of a conversation ends up taking 10 times as long.

So this post gave me the idea to put my ps4 vertically, and it seems to have fixed my issue for whatever reason. My PS4 just booted up like nothing ever happened, but it wouldn't at all when I had it laid down horizontally.

One thing to do is use an optical cable and connect it to a headphone amp. That's what I'll be doing with my PS4 since I already have an amp with optical. Maybe when Sony patches in wireless headphone support, you can use that.

I just found this on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DIRI6I/?tag=neogaf0e-20

You can use that to connect to speakers, or get an RCA Y cable (2 male to 1 female) to connect to headphones.

I think their call center closes at 10 (PST) anyway, and with the 2+ hour waits right now, you'd never get through anyway.

I'll be trying tomorrow morning as soon as I can manage to drag myself out of bed.

Yup. So you'd never make it through. Best to start bright and early in the morning. You might actually get through before midnight tomorrow if you do. lol

I know someone mentioned this earlier, but I can't get it to work.

Here's what happens:

- Plug everything in, light pulses blue and then turns white. No signal, no sound.
- Also, TV actually says there's a connection, but nothing's showing.
- Tried multiple HDMI ports & cables, different TVs. Nothing.
- Fiddled with the HDMI port as mentioned earlier. HDMI cable fits snug. No metal protrusions in the port. Still nothing.

Anyone hear of a fix for this? Any advice? Thanks fellow GAFers.

Jesus Christ @ the download speeds. Downloading Resogun for my brother and it's like a 0.7gb file and we have been waiting for half an hour. It's not on our end either, we're getting at least 20mb/s. I hope this is because of the huge amount of people downloading shit on PS4 right now.

Thanks for the tip. So I have (at least) 22 more minutes..... Its nice to know that there may be light at the end of this infinite-hold tunnel.

My PS4 isn't accepting discs at all. There's no disc in the drive (you just get the 'beep' sound when you try to eject it), but when you attempt to insert a disc, it only inserts about a quarter of the way before the motor stops. You actually have to pull the disc to get it out, since the eject mechanism doesn't do anything.

This is happening to me as well, although it appears the eject mechanism on mine will still work. I cannot insert anything though. Quite disappointing. Called sony and they're sending a coffin.

My friend's PS4 acted haywire after he played it for a few hours last night, he went back to Gamestop for a refund and the girl already said two other people came in already with the same problems. I think it's best to wait a few months to buy one.

What a bummer...this "seems" like a pretty big problem after doing some research on the internet for about 1 hour. I sure hope i am wrong but from all the posts i am reading all over the internet..it seems to be a bit bigger than some of those comments stating its not.

I feel sorry for all the stories I've read of people taking time off work only to get a bricked PS4...wow, i would be royally pissed if i had taken some vacation/sick days off of work and this happened to me, keeps my fingers crossed...fortunately i was not one that pre-ordered. I went to Target today at 8am only to find a huge line outside as they had 12 extra PS4's...i just went for the Buy 2 Games, Get 1 Free..but man..imagine those that took time off of work on top of getting a bricked PS4? Sheesh

Hard to say. Of course, if your console has a 1% DOA rate, and you sell 1M on the first day, that's 10,000 defective units, so even a relatively low defect rate results in a large number of defective unit reports.

My first PS3 was DOA, and I guess my first PS4 is now as well. I'll just call up tomorrow and get a coffin, and play Resogun (if I can get the store working) until it comes.

Scariest thread ever. I may not even open my launch edition based on this.

Yea, I have my amazon launch edition still sealed and I'm scared to even test it. This is absurd.

Yea. That's why I didn't. I don't take time off anymore for game or console launches and this is exactly why. I'd be royally pissed if I had taken a couple days or a week off.

Also, here's an example for what I mean on the TV. The little arrows next to the input means that something is plugged into it and on, but then the second picture says there's no signal.

Don't return the units to Amazon ffs! If enough units get returned they may discontinue the PS4 from sale like they did the 3DS. Just talk to Sony customer support and they'll fix the issue for you. Don't return it for the good of Sony!

If these issues all turn out to be hardware related then that would be absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. Praying that the main culprit is a buggy firmware and that these problems can be worked out through software updates.

If not, I may have to switch to the Xbox One. One of the things that drew me towards Sony's side was the belief that this would be a reliable launch. Guess that's not the case.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like it is just poorly made with cheap parts considering all of the issues we are hearing about. Even with the controller.

Well, it's just day one but I am seeing it everywhere. Hopefully it all goes well from here.

With the high volume of units sent out, it's not really surprising. I'm already afraid of what next week will look like for the other big launch.

I had this same problem. What worked for me:

Because the awkward design I had to hold the PS4 to plug everything into the back, which accidentally turned the thing on before the HDMI plug was in.

After that happened, nothing I did would make the signal appear on the TV. Friend told me to turn it off and unplug everything for 5mins. I did that, making sure I didn't touch the front of the PS4 at all so the thing wouldn't power on.

It then acted normally. I believe this did the trick, because no matter what I did the HDMI port wouldn't produce a picture before the long reboot.

Also, here's an example for what I mean on the TV. The little arrows next to the input means that something is plugged into it and on, but then the second picture says there's no signal.

Same thing was happening with mine. I turned it vertically to turn it on and for some reason it came on.

EU launch in 2 weeks. pray the twelve it goes smoother.

hope Microsoft's launch goes smoother. this wouldn't be a good start for next gen.

Sony is just a company to me of which I enjoy their products but I do not owe them anything. And if they send me a defective unit, I'm going to return it to the retailer I bought it from as opposed to waiting a month for Sony to fix it.

Whatever is going to happen is going to happen but it's not the consumer's fault who are just returning a faulty console.

WiiU was pretty fine ... don't think you can assume anything about whether a console launch will go smoothly or not until the actual launch.

Or there was some issue with this partcular factory. Putting my tinfoil hat on, I dont think these faulty PS4s were made by Sonys usual vendor. Someone new got the contract as well as Foxconn and they fucked up quite a few consoles.

Probably knew they fucked up and hid it from sony. Its not unheard of for Assembly plants to do this.

The controller however, is another story. Something strikes me as odd about this rubber issue. That is not the hallmarks of a Sony product at all, but that is something that should of been picked up on before launch far faster.

I hate to say this, but i hope I get a Foxconn main plant PS4. At this point, it seems the PS4 is being a victim of its own success, rather than having some inherant design flaw like the 360.

Well, it's just day one but I am seeing it everywhere. Hopefully it all goes well from here.

But seeing it everywhere doesn't really mean much. If they really sold a million units and 10,000 of them failed it seems like a huge amount of people going online and telling their story but it's not statistically a big deal.
