Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (Xbox One / PlayStation 4) - Jan 28 2014

So this is a comparison with exactly the same scene from the console version (which is what we should be comparing it to - not the PC version):

I'm sorry, but she did not look like that in the PS3 version. Is that CG or something?

Hi everyone, I’m Scot Amos, executive producer at Crystal Dynamics. we’re bringing the award-winning Tomb Raider experience to PS4 in the form of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition.

Wwe took the opportunity to use the increased horsepower of the hardware to create the Tomb Raider we always envisioned.

We had a core team here at Crystal collaborating with the super talented teams at United Front Games (who worked with Square Enix on Sleeping Dogs) and Nixxes (whom Crystal has partnered with since the Legacy of Kain days). Together, we pulled the game apart and painstakingly rebuilt it with enhanced visual fidelity, realism, and a new immersive richness to the world.

Getting our gameplay up to native 1080p meant increasing all of our texture resolutions by over 4x so the details and nuances can be seen in their full glory. However, it’s subtleties like our subsurface scattering technology — how we manage realistic lighting effects through solid/semi-solid matter — that we’re so proud of, which bring a new glow to Lara’s skin. All of these elements working in conjunction drive a much more realistic world than we’ve ever had.
The entire game world — the perilous island of Yamatai — is alive as well. Foliage bends as Lara pushes through it; trees whip in the wind; even cloth moves courtesy of new, more sophisticated physics modeling. Weather effects lash the island with unprecedented levels of venom, and rain particles are dynamically lit as they slice through piercing searchlights. The in-game cast has also enjoyed an upgrade — characters and enemies alike have been enhanced visually, while in-game destructibility has been given additional refinement to increase the sense that you are leaving a mark on this world.

However, as always, it’s Lara who’s the star of the show. As such, one of our boldest changes was to handcraft an all new, even more realistic head and face model for her, taking advantage of the increased power of PS4. This is our first glimpse of our next-generation Lara. We also drastically improved shader and lighting effects, adding dynamic sweat, mud, and even blood for a new level of visual acuity that reacts on Lara in different situations. Objects on Lara’s person like her climbing axe or arrows now independently react to her movements and sway or jostle with an obsessive eye for detail, further adding that nothing was too small for us to tackle.

Lara’s hair now benefits from TressFX technology — her hair strands are independently simulated and interact with environmental effects, as well as react to her every movement, delivering unprecedented, lifelike motion. This all-new Lara is Crystal’s first steps towards the future. It’s a promising, compelling beginning.

posted at the PS blog, all official like.

Awkward title billing against the PC version aside, I do like that this is happening, I'd like to see it happen with exclusive titles, though, since I do have a nice PC. Cleaned up 1080p content is something I will never complain about.

Preferably not at 59.99 though, that's kind of just twisting a knife in the wound that is a console launch window.

You're underestimating the game, actually. Some of the high-end features in the PC version could cripple the performance, TressFX being the main perpetrator.

Yeah you're right about that, I did a benchmark test a while ago on pc and the fps difference between normal and TressFX was huge. If they don't include TressFX can 60fps be achievable ?

it's funny that they made a big fuss about making her more "realistic" for the awful reboot just make her look like a plastic doll again in this version.

The PR lists native 1080p but no mention of frame rate. What if the PS4 version is 60 and XB1 is 30? GAF meltdown incoming.

Serious note, doubt I would buy it if either version is 30fps, especially at $60.

Lara's face in the original was a bit off compared to her cgi model, so glad they're improving it, but not sure how I feel about the new one yet...

That trailer is really cool though

top = pc with tress, bottom = vga trailer (ripped from youtube)

Top totally wins. Bottom might have better looking shadows in some people's opinion, but the contrast and lights vs darks ratio just seems too heavy handed to me. Her hair is too dark, much like her skin, and overall it seems to loose detail and look more 'fake' to me. Not sure how to describe it properly.

Plus the facial shape/structure just looks messed-up in the next gen version. I'm having a really hard time getting past it.

Probably makes more sense to go 1080/30 for both versions.

If they made the XB1 version 60fps it would probably be sub 1080 and for a HD update thats a little dumb.

Oh and $60? FUCK OFF.

Maybe its the low quality video but I feel that the pc version looked better?I mean I played it at max settings with ssaa so I'm pretty biased but the lighting did not seem to be an improvement.will have to see more to confirm.

Such a piece of shit game. Can't believe it gets so much praise. Generic cookie cutter from top to bottom that holds your hand like you've got downs.

The new face may be more graphically impressive but it looks more generic and "Disney-Princess" than the old face.

Still if they do a cheap $5 upgrade for those that own the PC version I'll probably re-play it with the new bells & whistles.

Glad I held off on this one. I do expect the $60 price point though, as they want to cash in on the included dlc and updated graphics, which will probably be equivalent to what was available on PC.

I wonder if they're using this re-release as an opportunity to testing bed for the Tomb Raider sequel. Maybe new lighting engine, physics, upgraded next gen stuff before TR2 hits. Two birds with one stone. Test plus make some decent scratch during a pretty dry month for PS4 releases.

The PS3 version looks great as it is. I really wanna see some high quality footage to see how the PS4 version looks. If its at least not as good as PC, I will be disappointed.

And why remodel her head? Seems unnecessary but I love that the guy at the VGX was geeking out about it. Camilla Luddington looked so uncomfortable there, haha.

I will definitely double dip when the price drops to a more reasonable level. I liked the game a lot but no enough to pay 59.99 again.

Didn't the Crystal guy at the VGX pretty much say this? That it was a great opportunity for them to dip their toes into next-gen technology (not in those words but sth along those lines)?

Camilla Luddington looks uncomfortable in almost every TR-related interview. You can almost hear her thinking how she hates to be around these weird video game nerds all the time :p. At least that's the vibe she's giving off.

She looks weird in that definitive version shot. Her face looks longer and more sculpted or something, like a Playboy model's face. Hard to describe

While I am glad that console players will be able to see Tomb Raider in all of its potential which I experienced on PC... That new face looks worse that the old one. So far from what I can tell PC maxed out is still the "definitive version."

So for those that prefer the original Lara face, what do you think of the CG trailer's Lara compared to in-game?

Do you think the new face should have been more like this or not?

The way the PS blog post is worded makes it sound like this is a test bed, yeah. Sounds like this upgraded model of Lara is pulled from TR2.

Yeah I don't really get it either, when I played it my first thought was "GAF will tear this apart" yet when I came here at the time everyone was praising it. I think people were smitten by Lara or having TR back or something because it did some incredibly shitty things gameplay and narrative wise

I actually like this version the most, though she looks more Asian and that's probably why

New face =

Ram up the saturation
Add some babyfat
Make the eyes slightly slanted
shape her eyebrows
makeup

and in certain scenes it seems they removed dirt

RIP old new Lara, they couldn't write you a believable coming of age story, so they might as well give you plastic surgery.
