Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

If anything, to me, random broken temples are much more bland than those uniquely shaped mountains in the background. The coloring I also find to be much more pleasing to look at. I take art theme over "graphics" any day.

The colors on the 3DS stage look garish, but it could just be that shot. I much prefer the more neutral tones on the Wii U version.

Plus that spiky mountain range in the background looks like they just copied the same one a bunch of times.

I like the Wii U Battlefield graphics-wise, but I do like the 3DS Battlefield for the cleaner, artistic look of it. Wish we saw more of that Nintendogs stage though.

I love 'em both. The slanted peaks on 3DS look neat and I like the natural and spacious/atmospheric look of the stage/background. I really like old ruins look of Wii U's on it's stage and background, along with the little details like the Smash symbol on the flags and slivers of grass blowing across the stage. It's also cool that certain areas illuminate after dark.

I decided to make a roster following a simple rule:

- use sprites from my sprite folder without further alteration that are from actual nintendo games.

I came up with the following:

neorice_roster_by_neoriceisgood-d725qai.png

Make of it what you will.

Missing veterans aside;
Would still prefer this roster over 90% of the stuff you guys propose btw.

I don't know if I'm allowed to post the link here, but if anyone's bored and wants to hear Sakurai talk about Brawl for almost an hour I reacquired his 2008 GDC keynote address (GDC removed the file from their site last year).

There isn't really anything new in the speech -- it's been summarized on various sites in the past -- but it's still nice to hear in full.

I would like to emphasis that I used your link, wiki and http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/15390 as sources. For super smash fans, I urge everyone to read those three sources. I always have been enjoying to reread those articles about Sakurai's GDC conference.

I would like to toss one quote here.

As Sakurai ended his talk, the crowd gave him a big round of applause. In the rush to get Sakurai off-stage, we overheard him being asked a question about the possibility of downloadable content for Brawl in the future. As we heard it, although Sakurai would have liked to do it, it was not possible due to the lack of hard drive on the Wii.

Super Smash Bros Brawl Development Schedules

  • After E3 2005 (May 2005), Iwata asked Sakurai to be Director of Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • Character Roster and Design document were finalized on July 7, 2005.
  • Development of Super Smash Bros. Brawl began somewhen during Oct 2005
  • First Super Smash Bros Brawl Trailer was revealed during E3 After Hours Press Conference on May 10, 2006.
  • Second Super Smash Bros Brawl Trailer was revealed at Nintendo World, which announced Fox as playable character
  • Super Smash Bros Dojo was launched on May 27, 2007
  • Sonic and Delay were announced on Oct 10, 2007
  • Release Date - Japan: Jan 31, 2008 and NA: March 9, 2008
  • Super Smash Bros Dojo ended on April 14, 2008

Informations:

  • Nintendo opened a new office in Tokyo just for Super Smash Bros Brawl production.
  • New office aka Sora, LTD was established in order to Sakurai to be freelancer. Sora, LTD only have two members, which is Sakurai and his assistant.
  • Nintendo and Sakurai enlisted several companies to helping them out with Super Smash Bros Brawl Development. Those following companies and members that joined the team to assist Sakurai; Game Arts, Monolith Soft, Paon, and several smash veteran staff members.
  • Game Arts is the main team for preliminary development stage
  • Hal Laboratory gave the teams all accesses to original materials and tools from the development of Super Smash Bros Melee.
  • About 100 members worked on the project full time.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS Development Schedule

  • Iwata announced Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS during Nintendo E3 2011 conference in order to attract new team members
  • During Feb 2012, Sakurai tweeted that, during his brainstorming, he had been looking over Super Smash Bros Dojo, and reflecting on the past game's development.
  • E3 2012 Nintendo Direct confirmed joint-project between Sora, LTD and Namco Bandai
  • During June 2012, Sakurai reported that the game's development was in its first steps.
  • During June 2012, They announced that Sakurai and Namco Bandai already completed a working prototype.
  • During Aug 2012, Sakurai stated that game system had been completed.
  • E3 2013 Nintendo Direct release a first trailer of Super Smash Bros 3DS and Wii U, which confirmed 9 veteran characters and 3 newcomers; Mario, Link, Pikachu, Kirby, Samus, Pit, Fox, Donkey Kong, Bowser, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer and Mega Man.
  • Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS website went up on June 13, 2013
  • Daily Image started on June 13, 2013.

Informations
  • Yoshito Higuchi and Keiki Kobayashi are team leaders for Development teams.
  • Sakurai expressed his interests that he intended to bring back old Nintendo characters for the games.
  • Feeling that the series had found its target audience and introducing gimmicks would hinder rather than help the brand, Sakurai explained that he was thinking of ways to introduce a new, different experience, while retaining the frantic gameplay from previous installments.
  • Tripping were removed from the game, and gameplay would be between Melee and Brawl

My takes on Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS Schedule
  • Sakurai probably started on brainstorming phase in Jan 2012, and finalized his roster plan and design document in March 2012.
  • Namco Bandai and Sora, LTD probably started working on the games somwhen during April or May 2012, which would explain that they have completed prototype in their hands during June 2012.

If I made any mistakes or I forget to add something important then please let me know.

Yeah, April or May 2012 is also the month I have pegged as the start of development. Brawl took just over two years to make, so hopefully this will be out sometime in the summer.

Also when the game was first delayed, it was pushed to February. Then a month before release, it was then pushed to March.

I noticed tomorrow is the release of Dr. Luigi in Japan. Should we expect something out of it, like an alt costume for Mario and Luigi?

Technically they were supposedly to have about 25 months production, since they need few weeks for games going gold. If they didn't hit by Sonic's late addition, then they would have time to put Mewtwo and Roy in the game. With the delay, they had about 27 months production.

Dec 3rd 2007 > Feb 10th 2008 > March 9th 2008

Also I would predict that we might get a picture with a trophy of Doctor Mario or Luigi.

Great recap, IntelliHeath, props man.

One thing that caught my attention:

Informations
  • Yoshito Higuchi got confirmed to be director of the game.

I'm likely understanding this wrong, but does this mean Sakurai -isn't- directing this time around? Or just that Mr. Higuchi serves as co-director?

They're co-directors.

Thanks, and it was my mistake. I forget to add co- to the director. I will correct my mistake.

Edited: Corrected my mistake,

Yoshito Higuchi got confirmed to be co-director of the game, along with Masahiro Sakurai.

It’s never been stated anywhere that Higuchi is a co-director. As always, IGN pulled that out of their asses by misinterpreting the original quote. Kobayashi and Higuchi are leading the development team on a technical level under Sakurai’s direction, which is typical for the production of any game, but Sakurai is still the sole director and creative force.

(Of course, Wikipedia’s claim that Higuchi is the co-director links to the aforementioned IGN article.)

Basically they are team leaders, so that would make sense since Namco Bandai workers would work very well if they are familiar with their team leaders. I will correct the mistakes when I get home.

Chrom and Lucina have peg legs. And the artstyle is atrocious. I'm sorry. Toilet armor and open tongue flap shoes is ugh to look at.

I've updated the look of my personal roster, and I think it looks a lot better now! I've also cut Ghirahim and Chrom.

I have two versions, one with unconfirmed character images and one without:

I don't know which version I like better. The one without the unconfirmed character images looks cleaner, but the one with the images makes it a bit more interesting visually and provides reference for people who may be unfamiliar with the character names.

Also, I have an unhealthy addiction to Smash Bros. roster predictions. I should just stop already.
Not gonna happen, lol.

That looks amazing. And I love how the font doesn't look all shrunken to fit different character's names.
Thanks! I based it off of the look of the official site. I really like the style they're using, and I hope the actual character select screen ends up looking similar.

The Wii U Battlefield reminds me so much of the Sky Sanctuary level from Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed.

That level rocked.

I played an online race on that track earlier today. It's a great track.

The best part is the remix of Back In Time that kicks in from Sonic R.

Speaking of Sonic, we've got Lost World for the Wii U, you think the 3DS will use one of the Sonic Rush levels? Or one of the classic stages that were in the 3DS version of Generations like Casino Zone.

Awesome roster, but I found a quote that Sakurai mentioned that we might getting more than one old character, so I wonder if the translation is accurate.

You did fanfastic job with the chart works. It made me wonder if you can do me favor please?

Can you change all 4 newcomers from this

character-rockman.png

Into something like this,

I would like to have same square size as those veterans, along with colors and name.

Are you talking about this quote?

Adam Riley: You have mentioned how you like to breathe new life into forgotten franchises. Now that Kid Icarus has been completed, what other old classic would you like to look at? Ice Climbers, Star Tropics, MoleMania…or something non-Nintendo?

Sakurai-san: I am planning on doing my best to bring old characters back in Smash Bros. From that perspective, I am probably in the most fortunate position in the world.

http://supersmashbros.ign.com/artic...ive-more-old-characters-in-the-next-SSB-games

I think that could be interpreted in a number of ways. I would say that characters like Little Mac and Pac-Man could kind of be considered "retro" in a way, too, despite appearing in new games.

Thank you! And it's funny you should ask that, because originally I was going to take the easy route for my roster and use those exact square character images from the website for my roster and just scale them down, but then there's the issue of the newcomers not conforming to the same square shape as the veterans, lol. I was going to try to do what you're asking, but Rosalina & Luma were giving me a hard time due to the fact that the Mario symbol overlaps Rosalina's wand's shadow and all, so I just didn't bother, lol. That's why I instead just remade icons for everyone from scratch. I suppose I could try to do what you're asking, but I can't promise that it will look exactly like the others.

EDIT: Damn, beaten!! Nice work, BGBW. You might want to move Luma up a bit so its shadow isn't touching Rosalina's wand like that, though.

I hope you don't mind, BGBW, but I moved Rosalina's wand over Luma's shadow.

BGBW took care of it on the last page:
Yeah, I saw after I posted, and I noted that in my edit, lol.

On the subject of the icons from the official site, has anyone else noticed that Pikmin & Olimar doesn't have a shadow like the rest of the characters?

character-pikmin.png

It bothers me more than it should, lol. That's why I skipped on the shadows in my roster, too (well, that and because it'd be more work, lol).

Also, does a version of Mario's art exist without the flame like in his icon on the site, but with a transparent background like the big art on his character page?

So no flame, like this:
character-mario.png

But a full image with a transparent background, like this:
main.png

That's another little thing that bothers me, lol.

I like it, I would just remove Shulk and Impa. Oh and call the Wonderful 101 Wonderful 101.

Also would add Waluigi somewhere, instead of Takamaru?

Maturity, bitches.
I hope you don't mind, BGBW, but I moved Rosalina's wand over Luma's shadow.
Don't mind at all. I did them quickly after all, but I really should have just moved the luma's layer down one before saving.

True, that's what I thought, too. Still, it seems out of place when compared to the others.

WHERE DID THIS COME FROM?! :O
Well I have a super hi res version of it from the E3 press pack.
