PlayStation VR will be priced "not to make money from it " - Shuhei Yoshida

Cross-posting from the other PSVR thread as it is newsworthy.

Yoshida was interviewed by Digital Spy and has said that PlayStation VR will not be priced to make a profit, which gives me more confidence this will be priced quite nicely in my £199-£249.99 price bracket

PlayStation VR does feel the most 'living room-ready' of the competing headsets, with Oculus and Vive a bit more specialist. Do you think Sony's history in that space is its biggest advantage?

SY: "We are bringing a console mentality and also making developers test it fully before using their content. We tend to price hardware not to make money from it but to get as many install base so that content can be sold. This is the same kind of thinking in the way we are approaching PlayStation VR.

After the concern about the technology's capability will be the question of how much will the thing cost. My conjecture is based from looking at the BOM of some smartphones and just guessing for additional costs, of course I could be way off the mark but Sony have impressed a lot of people this generation so I'm optimistic.

What are your thoughts, GAF?

Not gonna happen.

ITT people will be surprised to find out VR headsets are actually expensive and likely won't be impulse-purchase price for a loooooooooooong time.

Well, Sony is like the only company involved in VR which will also make money with software in a big scale.

I expect that PlaystationVR will be significantly cheaper than other solutions,

Hmm, so what's a bundle with camera+psvr hmd+two move controllers gonna run? Any takers for what that'd be at cost?

Move controllers are dirt cheap at the moment so I'd stock up. PS4 camera can also be found pretty cheap used.

They'll sell PSVR on its own too for people who already have the peripherals.

I think Sony want to make this a platform and, as such, are willing to take the hit on the hardware, to subsidise it with publishing cuts.

I think adoption is paramount for this to work.

the price of entry is going to be a huge deciding factor as to whether or not VR will take off this generation (at least in the console space). if it isn't successful now, people might be more hesitant in the future. it's absolutely crucial that they price it competitively.

$250-$299

I don't see £199-249 as impulse price, but at the same time I don't see it as a massively premium price and quite reasonable for what it is.

I would have rather paid more for a dual screen design with IPD adjustment rather than the cost cut single screen, one size fits all they went with.

Considering you'll need a PS4 to use it, I'd say the sweet spot would be $150-$199 to appeal the mainstream people in case they have the proper software to generate demand.

But I think that the VR killer apps will need a few years of prototypes, tests and failed ideas. And that this price isn't realistic. So I bet it will cost $349. Or $299 if we are super lucky.

For this price it should include the camera and dildo controllers or whatever you need for the full experience.

I predict that VR market won't explode until at least 4-5 years. Maybe in the next generation, once they have enough experience in terms of game design and once they release an important HW revision (PSVR2).

I'm expecting 299$.
And it still will be too much for most people.
They know it as well, they're not expecting big sales in the launch window (I think I've read less than a million at launch is their current forecast).
VR is something that will either take off slowly with positive wom and a progressively lower entry price or it will be the next Move/Kinect/3D glasses.

Can this be used with all PS4 games or specifically VR games? I curious if it can be used as a regular display also.

Sure, I just remember from some past threads, people being blown away by the idea that these headsets could possibly cost over 150$ or more. I'm glad to see this thread being more reasonable and level-headed with that in mind.

Basic Set (VR, PsEye, Demo disk) - 249$

I thought I remember reading they were using a revision Move controller for psvr, if not that's excellent, will find them for cheap online.

From the quote it can be inferred that they're planning to make profits from software, not the hardware itself. It is very reasonable since it seems they are going to spend quite some money on this.

I expect Sony to surprise me with the pricing. In a good way.

Hopefully there's a bundle that includes just the VR headset, or the headset and game(s). I prematurely got ready for PS VR, so I have everything except the headset. I really don't need another camera sitting around, and I have not just two Move controllers, but the secondary accessory that came with an analog stick on the end.
