PlayStation VR will be priced "not to make money from it " - Shuhei Yoshida

Anyone know what the BOM on something like this would be? If it is being sold at cost, then we might get a ballpark on price?

In this thread I learned that whatever the elusive price is, it can't be less than $299 and it can't be more than $299.

It's still surreal to me that VR is a thing now. Only thing that could bring it down for me is if the software is lackluster after launch titles.

I hope it isn't.

This makes sense. Sony is trying to get their foot in the door and be the definitive source of VR the way they were with the Walkman. That's a lot more valuable than making a margin on each unit, so they should be able to price it at around BOM. It still won't be a mass market device for a while, but it's not really trying to be either.

Can this be used with all PS4 games or specifically VR games? I curious if it can be used as a regular display also.
They said that they're working on that feature, so it's probably going to be on a per-game basis, and not available at the Playstation VR launch.

$300 and I might bite, any more and I'm just going to the Oculus route.

Getting an Oculus regardless, but if they give me a good price point, I could see getting both.

double jump

you haven't lived until a random little kid ask you "how do you make love".
I'm more concerned with how closed or open the platform will be and less on price. Imma be real, I wanna see what's up with that vr porn.

This implies much long-term investment which is... interesting. I wonder if the external box is designed to work with future hardware and headset revisions. It lasting just the rest of the PS4's lifespan isn't terribly attractive. I apologize if this was known already. You'd need top level corporate approval to sell the thing at a loss, so there are enough people with enough power at Sony that must like it.

Not trying to make a profit. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
Weren't around for the launch of the PS3, were you? Or ANY new hardware, really, but especially the PS3. Sony spent all of last gen trying to claw back the losses it took on the original models that had BC and superfluous hardware attachments. Actually I don't know if they ever made it back at all.

It could be cheaper than we're expecting, but then so was the Vita, and look how that turned out.

I have no idea whether I'm on board with virtual reality or not. I don't think I am. I wouldn't mind trying it out, but I'd probably end up treating it like nothing more than a gimmick after a short span of time, like I did with EyeToy and any form of waggle. That's why I'm worried they'll end up selling PSVR at a price that's very affordable!

Step 1: 199€ for the VR. 299 with Ps Move and the PS Camera.
Step 2: DOAx and Summer Lesson as launch titles.
Step 3:???
Step 4: Profit.

Prob closer to $399 though
I wouldn't think so, having an "add on" cost more than the console it runs on is a sure fire way to not get the masses on board. Enthusiasts? Probably, but that would sway devs from making stuff for it if the install base for VR doesn't out weigh the cost of production for games.

Which leads me for think: How expensive is it to make a VR program/game?

The right strategy, get it into more people hands, push more games and PS4s.

Crow will be eaten by those who doubt what VR can already achieve.

So if the profit margin on a ps4 is pretty small and they need to sell software to earn money, how are they going to make money if PSVR also has no profit? VR games going to have an extra tax?

Then it's going to fail.

They have to hit the prices i put to have any chance at success

Not everyone has the same price sensitivity as you. The price will doubtless come down over time, but I strongly doubt it's going to be available in any configuration for $199 on day one. Yes, that means it will be somewhat niche initially but it can still find an audience. I'd expect it to come bundled with some kind of showcase title to take some of the sting out — but compare this to something like the Rock Band "band in a box" kits that are useless except for one very narrow genre. They still sold and sold well because thy offered a unique experience that people evangelized to their friends and family.

I think if they go for anything more expensive than £200, they are sending it out to die. Unless they market the hell out of, most people will see this as just an accessory, albeit a cool one, it needs to be priced as such, or the majority of people will just see it as unnecessary for the cost. They could also think about bundling a VR game in with it.

I'm down for $299.

Anything higher and I worry for the PSVR.

Who's gonna bite the bullet announce price and release date first?

I'm going to call it, $299.

More would be priced out of "mainstream" (including me), and less would be .. well... really good, but probably unlikely. $249 would be great, $199 would be instant success (as much as VR could have for a v1.0).

I suspect strongly they won't launch at a price higher than the current PS4, as that'd be suicide.

I can totally see $299 though.
Was gonna say the same thing - expecting it to match whatever the price of the PS4 is when its launched. Expecting £250 min though

He is talking about launch. From my understanding PS4 hardware itself is very profitable currently and will be more so by the time PSVR launches.

I'm interested in it, but not if it's expensive. I have the camera and move already so I'm hopeful it will be reasonably priced.

Mark Cerny is going to come out at PSX (which has been moved to Austin, Texas for some odd reason) to make the price announcement.

"I'm proud to announce PlayStation VR will be competitively priced at $599 US dollars!"

*crowd boos*

"If you can't afford it, you can always go out and get a second job."

*boos grow louder*

The crowd gasps as Cerny digs his nails into his own neck and begins to peel his skin off. It's a mask! Cerny rips it off to reveal his true identity: Ken Kutaragi!

"It's me, Austin! It was me all along, Austin!"

I read that quote as they're conceding it's going to have a heft price tag. They're basically doing preemptive damage control by saying they're not making money off it.

maybe. PS4 launched at $399 though. Most buyers and the target audience are likely current PS4 owners. And anyways I was more implying a $349 range, with the" closer to $399" comment

$299 for the headset.
$349 for the headset + camera.

Use either the DS4, or buy PSMove controllers separately, they can be bought used at GS for $15. I'm sure they will also restock markets with new PSMove controllers, probably prices at $29 each.

define "fail."

nobody is expecting VR to achieve significant mainstream penetration next year. Palmer Luckey recently described the consumer rift as similar to the early palm pilots:

If you look at the Palm Pilot, it’s sort of a good example. The Palm Pilot was very well known. It was very influential, but it wasn’t something everyone wanted to use or could justify. They sold millions of units and lots of people recognized Palm Pilot as a great brand, but you could say the Palm Pilot was [still] a niche product… I think virtual reality will be on the same continuum. It can be successful as a niche product.

i honestly don't know where this idea comes from that VR is immediately going to blow up and achieve iPhone levels of success right off the bat. it isn't. it's going to remain a niche product for the foreseeable future. it can still be successful as a nice product. There is every reason to think that eventually, once tech improves and costs lower, it can be massively successful as a mainstream phenomena. but we're not there yet. sony, oculus, valve all understand this, and are releasing their VR systems anyway, to test the response, develop content, and gain a foothold in the emerging market.

I'm guessing $299 with the camera and some minigame collection. Move controllers packed in with some high profile game/experience thing like the Getaway.

I'm kinda feeling $199. Call it a fifth sense.
